Now, the real difference between American and German music tastes is that in Germany, a song that once was popular usually remains popular. We hardly ever say, oh, that was so 2011 and it is completely out now. No, like 95 % of these songs can be heard on any regular day in 2023 in German radio… My American friends always got a kick out of listening to the radio and within a hour, hearing a mix of Sixties, Seventies, Eighties, Nineties, Nena, Queen, Elton John, the latest hits, AND the good old oldies…

Have you reacted to the video about songs by german bands / artists nobody knows are german? Germans really seem to be attached to foreign songwriting and language, so they did their own things, like Mr. Presidents "Coco Jamboo" (german band). Fantastic song btw. If you LOVE german techno, you need to check out Kraftwerk. They were the original Techno artists, and were a huge impression and idol for bands like Erasure. For me Still by Jupiter Jones is easily one of the best german songs ever written. It is so simple, but so emotional at the same time. Sadly, at least for me, german music has really degraded in the last 10 years or so. The addition of german rap, especially the hateful filled one, was a bad one, and there was a rise in the use of autotune and a decrease in vocal talent as well. If the singer can't sing, autotune is used to fix it. If you compare this to Ich + Ich at their peak, or even songs like Münchner Freiheits "Ohne Dich" (80s song), you will definitely notice it. With the arrival of new songs the german speech pattern was completely changed, and today you have 6 year old kids calling you all sorts of names. This is really sad.

To be honest: I am german and into music, but I haven't heard most of this song from the video! My taste of music goes in another type of music. But I just want to let you know: Germany has the third (!) largest music market on this planet, after the US an Japan! And there are some music legends around here who are doing music since decades! I've just attend a concert of a german Rap/HipHop-band on their 30th jubilee year tour! This video is so interesting to me. I moved abroad from Germany in 2014, so I really only know the songs up to that year, and then I know some of the songs in 2016 because I was attending some weddings in Germany that year. But yeah, if you're not in the country, there's very little German music that comes through to you unless you actively seek it out. As for the Lacoste shirts, those have been pretty standard for the last 20 to 30 years, especially in cities like Munich. I think of it as the Munich uniform... or uniform of law and business degree students ;) I didn't even know they were fashionable among young Americans in - what did you say again? - 2016. I feel in Germany they have always been there for the last few decades and just not gone anywhere.

Well, you know... there is a german style of music that is almost unknown in other contries, through it is becoming more visisble in other contries in the last couple of years. I'm speaking of Medival Rock or Medival Folk or Medival Pop. A simple explanation is that this is Musisc with a mix of modern and old instuments. There are a lot of popular bands over here making all styles of music. If you are interested check out music by "In Extremo", "Saltatio Mortis", "Feuerschwanz", "Schandmaul" or "Faun". Also "Versengold" has its routs in that genre, but moved more to folk by now.

I'm British born and raised (hence my initial interest in your channel) but have since moved to Austria in 2020 and learnt the language to a pretty workable level however still with many gaps! But I watch your videos to take me back to where I came from sometimes, and to see what you think of the area of the world I've moved to, in the German Sprachbund and sphere of influence. I spend a lot of time in southern Bavaria along the border with Austria and I myself have my observations and reservations on some things (Austria is the best!! XDDD) If you're ever back in the area or intend to venture into Austria, I'd be 100% down and happy to meet up and break you into the culture and help explain things! I could recommend some things that I quite like or that those around where I live listen to: SIDO (ALL) Rammstein (it's metal, but if you like that, then ALL) AnnenMayKantereit (ALSO ALL) Wildberry Lillet - Nina Chuba OHA - Käptn Peng Herr Inspektor - Seiler und Speer (Exclusively in Austrian German dialect) 10 Jahre - 187 Strassenbande Piraten - Ali Affront Wo kann man das kaufen - Alligatoah 110 - Capital Bra Phänomen - Roxy & Cyril Hurra die Welt geht unter - K.I.Z. & Henning May Vergessenes Königreich - GReeeN Ring in der Hand - Josh. The whole reacting to german stuff actually got popular after the german rapper Gzuz released his music videos on world star hiphop. The video kind of polarized in the us and alot of american youtube channels reacted to the video. American youtubers like james bray started their whole career by reacting to german hip hop. Over time reacting to german music got less popular and so the trend shifted to reacting to german culture or Germany in general. So thats where we are now and I think thats one of the reasons your channel got succesful pretty fast. The song with the line of drugs you stopped at is called "do you wanna take drugs with me?" And US music heavily impacts German music and TV.. pretty much all popular stuff is "inspired/adapted" from the US or elsewhere.. and then there is soft pop that all sounds the same no matter the year.. Jahn Böhmermann a popular comedian actually let apes in the zoo write a song by giving them several terms and fruits on each word - and they picked them by taking the food. The result sounded EXACTLY like any other song. The Song is called "Jim Pandzko feat. Jan Böhmermann - "Menschen Leben Tanzen Welt" | NEO MAGAZIN ROYALE" If you want to react on it

Musical theory and the psychology behind what makes good sales has been studied for years. Now that we have computers, they can do the majority of the leg work to make songs more appealing to the widest possible audience, and will pitch match any bad singing automatically giving them that perfect voice and beat temp throughout the entire song. There is so much electronic music generated now, and we're just moving in to the era of AI generated singing voices. Just like AI can generate endless South Park episodes with a single prompt now, the music industry will be generating endless masses of songs.

@@dataterminal that’s right. but there’s one problem: computers have no soul. so if you want tho generate a piece of elevator music or a background track for your youtube commercial: go with ai. but if you want to write a piece of music that‘s exiting, rebellious, hits the listener in the middle of the heart or that is played in a way that gives the audience chills or goosebumps, then stick to manmade music.

A lot of german produced music is sung in english too. So it sounds like american music, but is in fact german, since it is hard to earn money with songs that are in german, since aside from rammstein, they don't sell very well outside of germany when they are in german.

The biggest problems with these lists is that they are mostly based on sales data (top 100 most sold physical cd's per week) You can see it at around 2016-17 were german pop music basically suddenly disappears in these lists, because that was the time where digital downloads & streaming took really off & from that point forward those pop songs were almost only to find in streaming & download lists but not in cd sales anymore. Nowadays there is like 90% german rap & hiphop in these "top lists" because they have the most support on retail cd's. Everything other genre is almost nonexistent.

If you want to listen to one of the most popular artists/groups from Germany (still today) you have to check out the Album "Stadtaffe" from Peter Fox or any songs of Seeed which is a group he is the main artist of. Stadtaffe is still, after nearly 15 years, one of the most succesfull albums from Germany.

imo Peter Fox and Seeed capture the vibe of Berlin City so beautifully. Very multicultural, Party, chill, good vibes. So good! Definitely the best German representation in music for sure!

10:10 I’m speaking as a Belgian here. What I can say however is; American music has an immense impact on European music as a whole. And it’s not just music either, it’s everything online. A lot of American things get “Europeanised” if you will.
@leajud1410 Жыл бұрын
Yes, you should watch the video with the songs or artists you think are american.... As music I would recommend Apache 207, Cro (played in Munich last year for the opening of the NFL game Buccaneers versus Seattle seahawks), and Mark Foster.

looking back on this, the song list is a bit embarrassing but at the same time it's what made german youth so fun to yell those hiphop rap songs at house parties. there are some gems in there, like annenmaykantereit. i'd recommend checking him out in a separate video :)

Thing with Lacoste as an example was, it was always considered a Rich Kid kind of Brand in Germany until the Rappers adopted them and started wearing them, so they were mainstream before but more in the like Upper Class of Germany

I don‘t listen to much of the chart music. I can recommend the band „Wir sind Helden“, especially the album „Von hier an blind“, right now I enjoy Nina Chuba (Song „Glatteis“ for example). „Die Ärzte“ were my favorite band in my teens (Song „Schrei nach Liebe“). And I adore the album „Alle Liebe nachträglich“ from Mine & Fatoni :) it would be cool to have you react to whole songs with the lyrics translated :)

I grew up between 2004 and 2010 with the rap songs of Bushido, Chakuza, Sido, Sentino, Kollegah, Kool Savas and Azad. Those were the days. During the disco period from 2011 onwards, I also grew up with Strobo Pop and a lot of David Guetta and other DJs. Most of what is shown here in the video is more radio music. It's often played on the radio. Here is the song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIusoWeEd69_opI

Wenn ich mir die Musik anhören müsste, aber weiter springen könnte würde ich bei 2/3 der Lieder so schnell oder schneller weiter skippen als es das Video gemacht hat. Its a pity he didn't link the original video. I'd love to see where this list derives from. Since the german charts are mostly international music, I can't find any list that fits to the one shown here.

There are lot's of music groups and artists in Germany, even if you don't like Rap music or electronic that are good, old and new ones. I still have a CD with a remake of the best of Nena she released in 2002, with MV of Leuchtturm and the english version of Irgendwie, Irgendwo, Irgendwann she sings with Kim Wilde - Anyplace Anywhere Anytime. 😅 All songs are good, old... yes! but good, not bad for being from the girl who had 99 luftballoons 💗 I could continue talking about how much I like Die äerzte, or the evolution of Nina Hagen and her music, but I will stop just mentioning some of the many other music groups I have loved through the years: Sportfreunde Stiller, Wir Sind Helden, Rosenstolz, Fettes Brot, Revolverheld, Silbermond, and many more...

Biggest German standalone musician is Herbert Grönemeyer, officially he even sold more music than all English musicians, Ed Sheeran would be second in Germany. The biggest German band, sorted by how much music they sold would be "Die Toten Hosen". Rammstein would be second.

the song "willst du" by Alligatoah ist literally about taking drugs. hes a very talented song writer and musician whos famous for his socially critical songs with a lot of puns and metaphors. there is a lot to be said in every single song if you dive deeper into it and not just take the lyrics for what they are on the surface.
