I think this is Canadian music recognized worldwide, but doesn't scratch the surface of Canadian talent. Triumph, April Wine, Loverboy, Chilliwack, Prism, Trooper, Max Webster & Kim Mitchell, Blue Rodeo, Colin James, Tragically Hip, Burton Cummings solo work is fantastic....one of my favourite Canadian singers right now is City and Colour (aka Dallas Green) & his former band Alixisonfire, also some newer bands like Dear Rouge, The Beaches.

I think this list proves why I don't use Spotify. I can see why you would think this is a great source, but it's missing majority of our rock music. Tragically Hip is iconic and is so much part of our cultural identity. Their absence is like saying Canada without hockey or maple syrup. This is coming from a person who isn't even that big a fan. My go to rock band was Our Lady Peace and Tea Party. There's also Edwin, who was originally part of I Mother Earth. There's so many others we could write an essay. I felt like throwing something at the tv with all the Nickelback.

Interesting since so many acts were so much more relevant and much bigger . The hip was a decent bar band that was mediocre relatively speaking. They exploited themselves with Gords death . They are not iconic at all . Even nickelback is hundreds of times larger and have actually helped up and coming bands .

I worked in music distribution and watched them grow steadily from "Up to Here" on.. The release of "Road Apples" was typical of Canadian bands.. decent sales but from "Fully Completely" onward you could could on them being a top seller.

It's an absolute crime that none of Triumph's hits made this list. One of the greatest Canadian Rock bands of all time! Check out their performance of "Lay it on the Line" at the US Festival in 1983. No April Wine either, another great hard rock Canadian band of the 70's & early 80's, from Montreal. Disgraceful!

Totally agree re: all of these. I would replay The Guess Who albums I had over and over. The year I graduated high school they released a song called "Follow Your Daughter Home". I loved that song, the lyrics, the calypso vibe, the flute. But their earlier music will always be my favorite. It just brings back great memories. Oftentimes of just laying on my bed, young and carefree, nothing urgent to do, the waves crashing from the nearby beach, the concentration on the instrumentals and lyrics for hours, so peaceful. lol.

I would like to point out that some of those artist are considered Canadian even if they didn't ever recorded in Canada. For example Steppenwolf are from the region of Toronto, but they moved to California before even changing their name to Steppenwolf. Also, if this ranking is based on Spotify, it's based on what is more popular world wide. A Canadian ranking would be different, for example, there would be a lot more Tragically Hip who are very popular, but mostly unknown outside. Also, there is not a single song in French. The French Canadian market is a lot smaller than the English one, but that doesn't mean that we can't do good music!

@@bearcraig Jean LeLoup was a legend in his own time and in the tape decks of every kid I knew. I still hear Harmonium every time I leave the house in the summer, coming from balconies, parks, grocery store radio. Not many other bands form the 70s I can say that about these days.

The song American Woman was written by Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman but was originally conceived live on stage while on tour in the US as a Vietnam protest song. Both are great musicians but to me Burton Cummings is an incredibly gifted musician that has always been under rated. I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert several times in his heyday. He not only makes the piano a cool instrument, but his showmanship and musical arrangement along with the way he uses his voice just becomes pure magic on stage. He along with Randy Bachman created a plethora of great music with their group The Guess Who. I unknowingly saw them as a child but remember they were really good. They opened for Sonny and Cher at the CNE in Toronto Canada, I think I was 8 or 10 yrs old, & I just remember the crowd was going crazy for them and the music was really rocking. I remember the young girls behind us calling Burton a "hunk" and I had no idea what they meant..lol. In the past 20 yrs the two of them have travelled around doing small festivals where I again had the pleasure of seeing them. They may be older but the talent is still there. There are a whole lot of great Canadian bands missing from this list that you may want to Google and have a listen to. Really like your videos. Cheers!

no, actually it was in Kitchener, Ontario . . . the band was waiting for Burton to get back to the stage. Randy started this bass beat to hurry him up. When Burton got to the stage he just joined in and started singing. American Woman is what came out. They had just finished a tour of the States and were just happy to be with Canadian women.. It was never about the war, that was a myth. The best part of this story is that when they wanted to redo the song, they couldn't remember the words. Fortunately they managed to find someone who was there with a crappy tape recorder. American Woman was born. As a side note that is Burton in my profile pic. He is a lovely man.

The Guess Who were invited to play at the White House during the Nixon administration, but the First Lady requested they not play "American Woman" because, at the time, there was a semi-anti-American perception about the song. I love that bit!

@@charmingjinx9379 I think that long told story is a myth. Tricia Nixon was a fan (she was behind the invite) and Tricky Dick would have done anything for her. I recall hearing once from Burt (probably) that being good Canadian boys they didn't want to offend anybody and left it out, but that wouldn't sound cool to the public, so the rumour went out they were asked/ordered not to. Randy and Burton often differ in the tales they tell 50 years later. I often find Randy tells what he thinks people want to hear. Burton has repeatedly said it was not an anti American war song.

Neil Young's father lived a few kilometers away from me (just outside of Omemee) and there were occasional "Neil sightings" until his dad passed away in 2005. Neil's song "Helpless" is about Omemee where he spent some time in his younger days. It was great to see The Band's "The Weight" amongst those songs as they were one of my favourite bands. Sadly guitarist Robbie Robertson passed away last Wednesday.

This is definitely a Zoomer list. I don’t hate Nickelback or modern Canadian bands, but there are some brilliant Canadian rock bands and singers from the 60s to 90s. The fact that this is a modern list and Amanda Marshall isn’t represented is criminal. She did soul/rock. It seems like Rush was thrown in because whoever made the list didn’t want to look like a complete idiot. But Helix should be there for sure, along with Amanda Marshall, Tragically Hip, Guess Who, Glass Tiger, Honeymoon Suite, Steppenwolf, Colin James, Bryan Adams, BTO, Chilliwack and April Wine. If those bands aren’t featured, they’re not a credible list. I’d even put Alanis Morissette on the list.

Spotify's rankings reflect a generational taste in music, some rock, and a lot of grunge. a better reflection would be by straw vote. There are songs from musical groups not represented who are easily more popular and influential. Tragicallyhip of course, Bruce Cockburn, Collin James, April Wine, the list is long.

I just finished watching this video as well as the top 150 video you did as well. I truly enjoyed your input, and understand many of the comments others have left below. I grew up in the same small town that Avril Lavigne did, and 20 minutes down the road is Kingston, the city where the Tragically Hip come from. A band with roots here that missed BOTH lists are the Headstones! Take the time to listen to some of their classics, like 3 Angels, Cemetary, or their astounding version of "Tweeter and the monkey man" and I think you will add this band to your own list. I was fortunate enough to have seen both them, and the Tragically Hip when they were starting out as bar bands. Keep up the good videos. I hope you take on the Australian bands in the future.

"The Band" had many more great hits (they were Bob Dylan's back up band, after he went electric) BTO -Bachman Turner Overdrive, was the after band of the "Guess Who" that went by "The Who" (until they were made to change it.) Joni Mitchell, April Wine, Triumph, The Tragically Hip, Jeff Healey, Max Webster/Kim Mitchell, Sweeny Todd, The Spoons, Teenage Head. The Sheep Dogs, Corey Hart, Colin James, The Trews, Sloan, and many many more, never made this list.

Like I said elsewhere, it was just a rock list but all it goes to show is how bad the spotify algorithm is. Mitchell, Lightfoot and Young were the three best songwriters that came out of the 60's who weren't members of the beatles. yeah I'd but Dylan behind all three of them. Joni doesn't have the deep catalog that the others do but Blue is one of the all time great albums. And another hill I'll die on, the eagles are just a low rent version of The Band.

Coming in late on this comment but…. anytime Spirit of the West comes on with Home For A Rest the dance floor is always packed and pretty much everyone is singing, loudly. And yes, it’s sad I don’t think there was one Tragically Hip song. Was there? This list wasn’t great.

To set the record straight regarding the creation of the Guess Who's song American Woman. The band had returned from a tour of the USA and were playing in a Curling Rink in Ontario. They had cut the tour short as the band members were at risk of getting drafted into the Vietnam where as there US work permits exposed them to that possibility. Randy had broken a guitar string so the band took a break so he could change it. Burton went out to the parking lot to buy some records from one of the patrons. While tuning up his guitar, Randy fell upon the riff that became "American Woman". The bassist (Jim Kale) and the drummer (Gary Peterson) returned to the stage and started playing along to the riff. Burton heard the band playing and quickly finished what he was doing in the parking lot and got back to the stage and grabbed his mike. Randy told Burton to "sing something" and the first words that he came up with were "American Woman, stay away from me". As it turned out, someone in the audience had made a 'bootleg' recording of the concert. The found the kid and were able to get a copy of the tape to write down the ad-libbed lyrics that Burton had made up on the spot. In July 1970, they performed the song on the lawn of the White House because Richard Nixon's daughter Tricia was a fan of the Guess Who and she asked her dad to invite them.

No way Tricia woulda put up with that, she would have had Tricky Dick make them sing it. I can't recall if I heard Burt say that they didn't do it because they didn't want to offend anybody not because they were asked /told not to do it. The problem is you get a different story from Randy and Burt who both BS on occasion, especially Randy who likes to tell what people want to hear.

They do listen to good songs, when they’re introduced to them. And data shows the classic rock streaming getting bigger and higher, and it isn’t us older folks being nostalgic that driving it. Risk averse studios, ownership concentration of radio stations, and algorithms impede innovation, exploration and discovery Never trust the algorithm. And yeah no not very proud of a large number of the songs.

Because this list was based on Spotify it's not a great list. Too many great bands were left out and some others were over represented. For the 1970's I'd check out bands like Trooper, Chilliwack, Michel Pagliaro. For the 1980's Aldo Nova, Honeymoon Suite, The Headpins. 1990's Our Lady Peace, Sloan, The Northern Pikes. All of these bands were great along with several other Canadian bands but they were the first ones to come to mind. Canada has a rich history of rock music. IMHO other than England and the US, Canada has produced the greatest rock songs and artists of any country.

I've seen Three Days Grace many times. They are a Straight Edge band (meaning no drugs or alcohol). I got to hang out with them backstage and they are legit with that. Great bunch of guys. Their story about why they are Straight Edge is pretty wild. Awesome catalog of music as well. We Canadians know how to rock!

Yeah, I agree with a lot of others, this just seems to be a Spotify list of the Canadian bands with the most listens - but it does not account for radio play, album sales, etc. There are so many great bands/songs missing from this list. Bryan Adams is wonderful. His music inspires you to sing along.

This is based on number of Spotify plays, so that will be biased towards recent songs. There's a lot more Canadian bands and artists that are not that well known abroad and wouldn't show up on Spotify rankings.

I have a feeling that this Spotify list is based on international play. The list would be very different if you had data from Spotify generated based on Canadian play. For instance, this list had no Tragically Hip which virtually every Canadian would have at least a couple of their songs in the top 100.

Big fan of Billy Talent, they get a very good praise in Canada, but is super big in Germany. There's one band that didn't make it on this list that is very good and has been around since the 90s but it may not be considered "rock", Very cetic, it's known as Great Big Sea and they come from Newfoundland.

There’s a great video at a Three Days Grace concert in Edmonton of a daughter signing the lyrics to her deaf Dad. Once TDG saw the video they got in touch with the teen and paid for her Dad’s hearing aids.

You might be interested in reacting to ‘Tears Are Not Enough’ by Northern Lights. It was a Canadian supergroup that came together to raise awareness of famine in Ethiopia. Similar to ‘We Are The World’ in the US.

There are so many great Canadian bands that weren't represented on this list. Smaller bands like Gob, Sloan, Treble Charger, The Tea Party, and even Our Lady Peace - who was pretty big at their peak - should get some love too.

The playlist only shows a small snippet of the many great rock bands of Canada. My uncle was part of two rather popular one of 80's and is still touring with them, and regaining their popularity once more. Toronto and Honeymoon Suite. In fact Honeymoon Suite took their name from the city where they formed up, Niagara falls. Other great bands from Canada also include: Glass Tiger, Head Pins, Econoline Crush, Lee Aaron, April Wine, Trooper, Sloan, The Odds, The Headstones, and so many more to add.

I'm probably a little older than most that watch your videos, so I'll say the punk rock movement in Canada during the 70s and into the 80s was probably one of the most spectacular times regarding live performance bands. I grew up with a couple of hippie parents who listen to everything from country, western to folk to rock, and certainly influenced me in keeping my mind open when it comes to music. Canada has a wonderful mixture of different styles of rock music and Canadians should take great pleasure, knowing that they have such great talent within their borders.

As a rocker from the 60's until today as I write this comment, these artists are still on my playlist and always will be ~ Neil Young, Rush, The Band, The Guess Who, Steppenwolf, Bad Co (any band with Paul Rodgers) BTO, Bryan Adams, Alanis Morissette and Three Days Grace. Avril Levigne doesn't qualify and some of the others would qualify for my rock list. However, I did hear several bands that I have never heard of that I will be checking out to possibly add to my classic rock, hard rock, metal, grunge, alternative, playlists. I like other types of music but some of these people wouldn't make any of my lists. I'm anxious to check out some of the bands on the list that I am not familiar with. I pulled up a list on the internet and there are a ton of more current Canadian rock bands that I will be checking out, many of which are mentioned in the comments. I'll be busy, lol. Imho, if Neil Young made the list, Joni Mitchell should have made the list too. She was just as instrumental to the rock/folk rock movement as Neil Young was. And, Rush deserves way more glory as they are often named the best Canadian band ever.

There are other bands like Triumph, April Wine, A Foot In Cold Water, Mahogany Rush, Max Webster, Voivod, Chilliwack, Lighthouse,etc. Notice how you said that the Tragically Hip were the biggest selling Canadian artists, but the U.S. didn't know about them, so they didn't make this list. Not a rock band, even though he is in one, but you should definitely check out Nardwuar The Human Serviette. An interesting character to say the least, but he has information that surprises his guests. I mean he absolutely flabbergasts some of the people he interviews. He's got lots of videos to choose from, I recommend you try his first interview with Snoop. Possibly his interview with Pharrell Williams, he was genuinely moved by his questions. He has had Canadian guests to review also, like Neal Young and Nickle Back, or Seth Rogen. He even does interviews with politicians, and gets some dirt on them. I'm sure other people have great suggestions for their favourite guests.....

Mert, you've got to check out Nardwuar The Human Serviette! He has such a unique interviewing style which, in a strange way, is so Canadian. Nardwuar vs Nickleback might be a good interview to watch given that Nickleback was so much a part of your Reaction to 100 Top Canadian Rock Songs video. Watching Nardwuar's videos always make me feel better. I'd also include Nardwuar's band the Evaporators as one of my favourite rock bands.

My wife and I saw both Nickelback and Bryan Adams. Nickelback was a great show loved it start to finish. Bryan Adams was incredible and when he came out for the encore with just his guitar and harmonica he showed what a truly incredible performer he is.

Three Days Grace was massive in Canada when I was growing up. Every hockey rink used at least one song in their intermission music. Billy Talent is almost a secret band that binds all millennial Canadians together. They’re pretty much unknown outside of Canada, but incredibly popular inside of Canada.
