The interesting thing is that from 1956-1999 the period where we did well most years was just juries of music specialists voting but once it changed to public votes we started doing much worse. I think it’s a combination of two factors: one juries look for different things in songs than the public do, and we changed the types of songs we sent once it changed to public voting not based on what we thought was a good song but what we thought other countries would like, and to do that you have to understand the formula. In comparison with somewhere like Sweden that has a big series of competitions to select their entry, most of ours are internally selected by the tv channel and they often don’t pick the right songs. I think if we used a talent show type format with the public picking our entries we would get better entries.

they needed to let the artist who sang in 2010 option down as he sounded pitchy all the way along.
