This type of "back and forth," "misunderstanding," and "play on words" dialog was probably played in some form, on ancient Greek Theater stages. TBS, The writing of this skit is awesome! The audio performance alone, is impeccable. This act was a huge radio media act before it ventured into film and TV. Add in the visual performance and you have the stage act that they built their careers on. The accelerated cadence of the performance is designed to heighten your frustrated empathy. It is without a doubt a brilliant masterpiece, performed masterfully!

So many Vaudeville acts made their way to television. Abbott and Costello were a comedy team years before television. They did this skit on stage hundreds of times. When radio became a thing, many acts would do shows on radio and families would tune in and when television came around, others like Burns and Allen, Lucille Ball aka I love Lucy, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Lewis and Martin all had their own shows. They could've done this bit in their sleep. You said it, their timing and delivery is what set them apart.

They started out on stage and radio (which was live, of course), so their timing was perfected by performing their routines over and over with live audiences. By the time this recording was made, they’d probably done it a thousand times. So when Bud tells the crowd they don’t want to hear that old thing, he kinda really meant it. They went on to make many movies through the 40s and 50s. They had a weekly radio show and later a TV show.

Throughout the skit, Costello was constantly missing lines and getting things out of sequence. It is a tribute to Abbott that he brought him around so smoothly that few people notice. They did the skit better in the movie "Naughty Nineties" but my favourite version is one they did on radio in honour of Joe DiMaggio. That entire show was a series of skits revolving around baseball.

Abbott and Costello got their start on the old vaudeville circuit in the mid 30s, where comedy duos were a common act. These duos often consisted of a 'straight man', Abbott in this case, who set up the funny man with the dialog. The timing is absolutely impeccable. I've loved them and this bit especially since I was a kid. A LONG time ago. They had megasuccess during the 40s in movies, being among the highest paid entertainers of the WW II era, and later in TV.
@scottcampbell3940
@scottcampbell3940 4 күн бұрын
Interestingly, the straight man in these comedy teams usually received the larger split - typically 60%, while the other "comedian" got 40%. It's always been the straight man who set the tone and speed and delivery of the routines. He was also the one who was tasked with knowing when to stop talking so the audience could laugh. However, finally, in the end of their relationship, I heard that the split was 50/50. The IRS wiped them out - they were both gamblers and lost their homes and pretty much everything else when the IRS opened their books and saw their winings. Bummer.

Costello is the short chubby one. Abbott and Costello may have been the biggest comedians of all time. They were the successors to Laurel and Hardy and the Marx Brothers and contemporaries to the Three Stooges.They were at their peak in the 40's and 50's and were making A list movies, mostly WW2 themed and classic monster spin off movies. "Abbott and Costello meet the Wolfman/Dracula/The Mummy/Frankenstein" with all the famous actors that played the Monster roles. Along with their many comedy skits and long running tv show in the 50's. If your a baseball fan around my age, 64, and older, you have seen this skit so many times it would make your head spin. Costello, was the simpleton, innocent, comedic genius. Abbott the streetwise, somewhat mean, straight man. But ironically, Costello was known to be the mean one and wasn't always the nicest to Abbott, who was very nice, in real life.
@dunringill1747
@dunringill1747 5 ай бұрын
There is a tragic reason behind Lou Costello's mean streak. He & his wife were out one day and their nanny was looking after their toddler. The little boy was tucked in his crib for a nap but he escaped his crib. It was no one's fault that he was able to escape his crib. He had wandered outside and drowned in their pool before the nanny had found him. From that day forward, Costello changed completely and was never the same. He became mean, and was very difficult for anyone to work with. Abbott did everything he could to show compassion and give condolences. He even started a charity in the name of Costello's boy. That lessened tensions somewhat, but not enough. They eventually split as a comedy team in 1957. Costello died soon after at a young age of 52 in 1959. Abbott always had kind words to say about Costello whenever asked. He was quoted saying that Lou Costello was the greatest comedy partner anyone could ever ask for by their side.

The night Abbott and Costello met, Lou saved Bud's life. Bud had an epileptic attack. Lou had a cousin who had epilepsy and so he knew what to do. And that's how the greatest comedy duo ever was formed. Lou always insisted that Bud received 60% of the money earned. Lou knew that Bud was the best straight man in the business, and most likely the best ever. Lou was fine with that because he received 40% plus creative control through his brother Patrick. Lou suffered from rheumatic fever for a year. Bud waited for him to recover. They were Hollywood's biggest attraction in the 1940's. Bigger than Bogart. Bigger than Bacall. Bigger than John Wayne. Bigger than Judy Garland. The duo raised many millions of dollars for the war effort. They also were willing to go to the war zones and entertain the soldiers. Who's on First was the most requested skit. When television became the new game in town, the duo conquered that as well. But the workload started to take its toll on the health of both Bud and Lou. I still remember fighting back tears while watching the final public performance of this skit. Bud looked haggard and Lou looked completely spent. Lou passed away 3 days shy of his 53rd birthday in March 1959. Bud was continuously hounded by the IRS over back taxes and passed away from prostate cancer in 1974, broke from the IRS and the hospital bills.

This particular version of "who's on first" was from 1953. But, the "who's on first" had a long run as a staple, and even found home on the 'Colgate Comedy Hour.'

Fun fact: The gentleman who hands them the props at the beginning of the skit is Mel Blanc, the voice of Bugs Bunny and many other cartoon characters.

Mel Blanc, the man of a thousand voices, did MOST of the cartoon characters. The list of voices he performed is astonishing. Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety, Sylvester the Cat, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, the Tasmanian Devil, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Barney Rubble, Dino, Mr Spacely, Secret Squirrel, Speed Buggy, Captain Caveman and numerous other characters from the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies theatrical cartoons. He did character voices and sound effects on dozens of radio programs as well.

Actually, the man with the props was Sidney Fields, who regularly played their landlord on the TV show. The most famous routine in which Fields was involved is probably the 7 times 13 skit.

This routine is actually an old vaudeville skit involving a laundry service. A&C made it baseball when they first did it on The Kate Smith radio show in 1938....(they had to restart the skit bc the audience wasn't getting it lol). For actors, this is a GREAT way to learn HOW to listen!

Bud Abbott was what was called the "straight" man, and Lou Costello was the "comic." The "straight" always maintained their composure and set up the jokes for the "comic." The "comic" was the "buffoon" that delivered the punch lines, and usually included physical comedy. This was a carry-over from the "vaudeville" era. Abbott & Costello were the best at their craft, and they wrote their own routines (mostly Lou Costello). (Dean) Martin & (Jerry) Lewis were the next greatest comedy team/duo that followed A&C during the 50s. The difference was that Martin & Lewis were more complete entertainers in that they did comedy, sang, danced... and did all three on stage and in movies. What a great time for entertainment in the U.S.
