Note regarding LoTR. To a modern fantasy audience, his work may appear rather cliched. But the thing is Tolkien originated a lot of the tropes that have become so common in the fantasy genre, and uses them a lot better than many authors attempting to emulate him have.

@@trielt1They're not meant to be disses. They're meant to be lines that hype the rapper up (usually at the expense of their opponent). Kind of like a flex. My favourite ERB :D Tolkien definitely won for me, his raps were both solid in attack and defence, the Book sales line was a great attack, as you noted, and his counter to Martin calling him a 'nerdy little nebbish' being countered by Tolkien calling up Led Zeppelin was also great. His last few lines were great too, a nod to all of the volumes of LotR: You can't reach this *Fellow, Shit* (Fellowship of the Ring) I'm *Too Towering* (The Two Towers), every time I battle it's *Return of the King* (Return of the King). (love the music, the lyrics, and the makeup/costumes) You kinda scared me with your intro, but don't worry, you did just fine! I'd say Martin made a VERY good showing for himself, but Tolkien blew him out of the water regardless. "You're a pirate. You even stole my 'R' 'R'!" I completely agree with the person who commented before me. I adore Tolkien and Lotrs was my first fandom and love. Asoiaf is a fantastic book series though with incredibly immersive characters and multiple perspectives, and it really shows the brutality of war. Honestly I love both series and couldn't possibly choose between them. I love how Tolkien's characters are fantastical, while Martin's are starker and amazingly unique between their povs. At least give the book series a chance and if it's not for you, that's cool, but everyone should take the opportunity to expand their current reading/read list.

@@REDANDSILVER741 This rap battle brings up the main reason I can't read ASOIAF: "We all know the world is full of chance and anarchy, so yes it's true to life for characters to die randomly, but news flash: the Genre's called Fantasy! It's meant to be unrealistic you Myopic Manatee!" If I wanted to be depressed, I'd contemplate my own life, I don't need a book to do that for me. If I'm reading fantasy, I want that happy ending that never happens in real life, where everybody lives and the hero gets the love interest and noone has cause for any negetive emotion. To be honest not even LOTR ends on a completly happy note, Frodo never is the same after carrying the ring for so long and ends up leaving with Bilbo, and the book has that whole battle for the shire that never made it to the movies, making it a bit more grim. Honestly I barely can take that bittersweet pill, there was never a chance i'd even remotely like the books. TV shows are a different matter, don't know why, but I can stand the show, even enjoy it, Only seen the first season, mind you, but I'm trying to watch more.
@REDANDSILVER741
@REDANDSILVER741 5 жыл бұрын
freddie lewis to each there own, but no one in game of thrones dies “randomly” that’s just a stereotype given by the mainstream audiences. ASOIAF and by extension GOT (except for season 7,8) everything happens for a reason. It’s not like main characters have heart attacks randomly. Every single death has a motive to move the plot where it needs to go naturally. The book treats every choice as a big deal and stupid mistakes can and will get you killed. The Red Wedding was forshadowed for a long time however because of that the real stories of the starks and Jon’s eventual rise of power to protect his people comes into play. Everything is necessary. There is also so much fantasy in ASOIAF it’s insane. There is definitely all these theories and textual evidence of Ice Dragons, China, and African Content with Dinosaurs and king kong. Shadow demons and religious worshippers of foreign gods. Prophecies that come true in ways you wouldn’t think. And more. This is all intertwined with politics of the story which is never really focused in LOTR. If you can handle real human emotions and decisions that have real consequences then this is a great story.
@leonmorte7241
@leonmorte7241 5 жыл бұрын
@@REDANDSILVER741 The point I made wasn't that people die 'randomly', that was just me quoting the rap battle, my problem is that characters that we are given emotional attachment to die at all. In any other fantasy story, Ned Stark would have been a Main Character that survived at least until the end of the story, and not killed in the first book/season. That is why I can't stand ASOIAF, I don't care whether or not his death had meaning, it doesn't matter, he's dead and that makes it depressing. I neither need or want depressing things in my fantasy books, I have enough of that in the real world.

Didnt Tolkien deny that the war had influence? I mean...Its highly unlikely. The way he describes Frodos Trauma and his suffering once he returned sounds alot like World War 1 Vets. And one of the most famous lines "You shall not Pass" is ripped straight from the Battle of Verdun. So who knows really...

"All your bad guys die and your good guys survive." [SPOILER ALERT] Hey, that's almost exactly what happened in The Long Night, so I guess Benioff & Weiss are more J.R.R. Tolkien than George R.R. Martin. George didn't write it at that point, but it is what happened in post-Red Wedding GoT.

Just to expand on the Led Zeppelin thing, it's interesting how many metal bands that were also inspired by Tolkein, the most obvious ones being Burzum (the morgul word for darkness) Gorgoroth, (a place in Mordor) and Blind Guardian, who had a song about The Hobbit (The Bard's Song - The Hobbit) a song about The Lord of the Rings (The Lord of the Rings) and an entire album about The Silmarillion (Nightfall in Middle Earth.) Anyway, I agree that Tolkein won this one. Kind of surprised you didn't comment on the line about WWI and Vietnam (Tolkein was a WWI veteran while Martin was a conscientious objector.) Could you do Shakespeare vs Dr Seuss?

OMG LORD OF THE RINGS REACTION, PLEASE CURTIS! PLEASE! I'VE NEVER MET ANYONE THAT HASN'T SEEN LORD OF THE RINGS TO EVEN ASK FOR A REACTION. PLEASE DO A REACTION! I would have asked for it much sooner, but I would have never guessed that you hadn't seen them before. EDIT: I can't be any more serious about this. I'll up my pledge by $50 for next month for it. I would do more, I just can't afford it. It would be amazing, and it wouldn't even take up much time, since they are movies, and not a series.

Game of Thrones would also be a good reaction, but, as it does span nearly 80 hours, I can understand avoiding that one. Plus, IMO, it's no where near the quality of Lord of the Rings.

Nobody can flex on a bar like Tolkien can. The dude _still_ has the highest grossing book sales of all time, served in the British armed forces during World War 1, inspired way too many rock'n' roll and metal bands to count here, and basically created the modern fantasy setting that we know today. Yes, I'm a fan.

Both had good flow, but Tolkien’s resume just tramples Martin: - Inspired practically every fantasy writer after him, including Martin himself - Continues to hold the top spots for best selling books even decades after his death - Was one of the chief influences for Led Zeppelin, one of the top selling bands of all times - Has a reputation for not only exceedingly good (albeit thorough) writing, but also fantastic world building to a ludicrously high level of detail - Used his experience as a soldier in WW1 for his writings They even leave out one of the best things Tolkien has ever done: Before WW2, the German Propaganda office mailed Tolkien asking him if he was Aryan. Tolkien replies with an essay describing that not only was the term “Aryan” actually used for the Indus River Valley civilization and had NOTHING to do with Germany, but also that Hitler should go fuck himself

There's no dispute, Tolkien literally slaughtered Martin. Martin was saying how Tolkien was predictable, then Tolkien answered: "Newsflash, the genre's called fantasy, it's meant to be unrealistic". Martin said how he's rock'n'roll - then Tolkien answered by hinting how Led Zeppelin wrote entire fucking album based on Tolkien's books. He rebottled Martin's lines. That and also Tolkien stated how his books sale far, far better than Martin's and that his children make tons of money on them to this day. Martin only answered by mentioning HBO and that he's rock'n'roll, which Tolkien then rebottled. And that line about Martin even stealing Tolkien's R.R. was savage, you can't deny that.

Led Zeppelin straight reference LOTR. Gollum, the Nazgul, Modor are direct topics they sang about. Ramble On, Misty Mountain Hop, Battle of Evermore, are there I can think of of the top of my head. I feel like there was alot more peppered throughout the other albums too. I seem to remember in an interview that the band liked to sit around and play D&D backstage and on tour, which was of course heavily influenced by LOtR Oh, and Tolkien won this. If not for him there would be no modern fantasy genre. Every video game, tabletop game, RPG, George RR, and Harry Potter are all inspired by the characters and the world that Tolkien created.
