@@HegeOfficial kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6jJlnR9gdxla9Esi=E1x9XVHGmlvG6AFH. One of my favorites a lot of people don't know about this performance but she was in her prime and her head voice agility at the end is the most stunning out of all of her live performances.

I was 9 watching this with my mom, VH1 had an encore so I got to stay up and see it again…it’s a performance that has never left me, the depth is unmatched…someone commented on another video that she plays with her vocal chords like one would play a violin, and that is it for me…she could go anywhere and we all wanted to unapologetically sink into her colorful tones and silky vibrato. Thank you for your share~ She really was thee storyteller too! It’s like she drives us in the fastest sports car while shifting effortlessly and brings us to the brink, every time 💜

By 1997 Whitney was out of her prime but she still killed it. Of course, by 1999 onward she starting losing/ lost some of her upper range but still held it together. It was so sad when she lost it entirely for many reasons. R.I.H to a legendary diva!!! Mariah & Whitney = My golden voices

This is divas live 99. This was the end of her prime. She didn't have her full vocal ability at this point that she had earlier... But she didn't need to. When you're the greatest of all-time even at your end of your prime you're still so good. The one thing she never lost was her unsurpassed tone.

I am so glad you dove into this. It is, in fact, Whitney in her prime. This, of course, was the theme song to The Body Guard, in which she starred with Kevin Costner. I never did see the movie but the song was transcendental. You really need to dig up Kevin's eulogy for her at her funeral. It will give you so much insight into her as a person and as a performer, especially as it relates to this song. Her momma was one of the great gospel singers of her era, and you can just see Whitney channeling her in her storytelling through song. That is a true gift of the Black Gospel tradition. She then takes it to a new level. She not only set the bar, she IS the bar. While singers may match her note for note, they will never embody the song as she did. I was a grown assed adult when I first saw this. Even then, I could recognize what I was seeing and what a gift Whitney was to the world. While I never followed the gossip around her, I knew that she was struggling for her life. When she passed away, it was such a gut punch. Watching her through your eyes was gratifying. You express yourself brilliantly in English. You really could be working for the United Nations or a multinational organization. Why you haven't had headhunters knocking at your door is beyond me... If you want to see, what for many of us, was a real highlight of her career, dig up her performance of The Star Spangled Banner at the 2002 Super Bowl. Having just endured 9/11 and still being in shock, America needed the kind of performance she gave. The whole event was emotionally charged and she delivered. I mean, she delivered. I am not American, but in early 2002 we were "all Americans". Thanks for this.

Thank you so much for your kind and insightful comment ☺️ I did watch the movie, but I haven’t heard Kevin’s eulogy. Now I definitely will. Guessing I need a tissue box. And thank you so much for the recommendation! Might make that my next Whitney one ☺️ Only thing is, with the docus I’ve watched on her in the past I might have seen parts of some of the performances, so I never really know haha. I’m so glad you’re a Whitney fan btw, cause that means one more reason to make more content around her. Your love for her really comes through in your whole comment btw. I remember I rented (sorry, I don’t know if that’s the right word for library items) a copy of one of her albums from the library as a kid, after getting absolutely hooked from watching that Disney movie about Moses and hearing her duet Mariah Carey (Miracles) in it.

This was not an 80s production. The Bodyguard film and soundtrack was released in 1992. I will always love you was #1 for 14 weeks and went on to become the biggest selling single by a female artist in history, and has surpassed over a billion plays on KZbin. The soundtrack is still the biggest selling soundtrack album of all time. Her first 2 albums were released in 1985 and 1987, her third album was released in 1990 followed by The Bodyguard in 92.

At your first pause where you are discussing her first run. I gotta say, that style of embellishment is definitely not my favorite by a long shot. So often (and I'm not saying it's the case here per se) singers who use this device, where you run up and down on a lyrics is irritating (It's one of the things that puts me off on Angelina). So often it comes across as a vocal athletics rather than singing the song. I do find that some vocalist will carve out a section to embellish as a standalone - like using scatting., or humming, or yodeling as example - Floor, Diana, Haley have all done that. Fact is Diana will do it on most of her performances. For me that distract from the lyrics of the song, and allows the vocalist to modulate without detracting from lyrics. I realize a lot of people disagree with my sentiment, but that is my reaction to lyrical embellishment.

It’s a personal preference thing. I personally adore a good run, and especially understand the desire to play around on songs you’ve done again and again. But it does depend on the composition, genre and setting. You don’t go wild singing runs over a classical piece or in a musical unless the musical director has requested it. But on this song and with a singer of Whitney’s caliber, I’d personally say more is more and it’s wonderful ☺️

It's called addiction. Addiction is a disease a lot of addicts can get better because they hit rock bottom they run out of money and they get help. For someone with as much money as Whitney Houston had there is no running out of money there is no rock bottom so the addiction continues. One of the hardest things for her at the end when her voice was deteriorated was she knew she was the greatest and when she lost her voice it only exasperated her addiction because singing was everything to her.
