The Nawab of Awadh/Oudh (Now Lucknow) Wajid Ali Shah was driven out of the Qaisarbagh Mahal in Lucknow and asked to abdicate his crown... he got a pension of 12 lac Rs per year (in 1855) from the British for this and also vast tracts of land in kolkata the Nawab first went to Kanpur and then progressed to Calcutta in a steamer accompanied by his close relatives and large entourage comprising musicians, nautch girls, cooks and animals from his menagerie and came ashore Metiabruz, Calcutta on in 1856... you should watch the movie Shatranj ke Khilari (made by Satyajit Ray in 1977) which depicted the Nawab's life.... Amjad Khan played the Nawab!
