My wife and I flew to Washington DC in January 1996 to see The National Gallery of Art's Vermeer Exhibition, it was great to see so many of this artist's paintings in one place. It was a blockbuster show at the time and the city had a heavy snowfall the week before and the Gallery was closed many days but it re-opened in time for the weekend. Memorable indeed.

I was able to see the exhibition this week and travel to The Mauritshuis as well. I was deeply moved to see so many of his paintings in one place. My eyes filled with tears when I saw his name at the top of the stairs before entering the exhibition space. As someone here says, I’ve seen a few here and there but to see them all together was a once in a lifetime experience for an art lover.

We went there yesterday and enjoyed both the paintings aswell as the people watching them from all over the world. Wonderful experience.

Those interviewed were part of a small group. Of course they loved it; they could take their time and look for a while without pressure. I just flew back from there and found it difficult to enjoy because of the number of people crowding around the paintings. Some people would occupy the central spot and just stand and stare for a long time; other couples would be talking about the painting's details for some time without moving. When I got to the front, I didn't feel comfortable lingering for that reason. When the catalog comes back into print (!), I'll enjoy looking at the details and reading about the new biographic details discovered about Vermeer.

Vermeer is one of my most favorite painters. I hesitated to buy a ticket in May and next I knew there were none! So thank you very much for this video.

Vermeer’s painting “A View of Delft” is quite stunning & very detailed. One of my faves along with Girl with a Pearl Earring. (Both of these are homed in The Hague)

Vermeer is my favourite painter since I was young . I have read that he worked slowly with utmost care , so there are only 35 paintings in all . Some medias call him " the master of light " as nobody paints light entering a room better than him.

Estimates vary. It's 37 according to the Rijksmuseum! What's the first painting of Vermeer that you remember seeing?

@@theiconographer Honestly I don't remember . But I like all his paintings especially " the milk maid " and " woman with a water jug ".

I once had the luck and priviledge to spend some hours alone at the Rijksmuseum. With nobody around and all the time in the world I was able to spend more time and feel more watching all these different artists. It was then that I found out that the Vermeer paintings moved me the most and I became a Vermeer fan. So I have to visit this exhibition. But even though I am Dutch, there is only one city I absolutely avoid visiting due to the public transport system and traffic and parking possibilities. So probably I won't after all :)

3:50 "Arnoldus Andries des Tombe (6 February 1816, Vught - 16 December 1902, The Hague) was a Dutch army officer, genealogist and art collector, notable for his purchase of the Vermeer painting Girl with a Pearl Earring - on the advice of Victor de Stuers, who for years tried to prevent Vermeer's rare works from being sold to parties abroad. Des Tombe purchased the work at an auction in The Hague in 1881, for only two guilders and thirty cents. He had no heirs and donated this and other paintings to the Mauritshuis in 1902"

Thank you for such a wonderful video. Alas, my wife and I cannot make it to this exhibition even though Vermeer is one of our favorites. We have managed to see many (but not all) of his paintings in their original museums, and would love to see them all in one place. However, it is likely that the exhibition involves wall-to-wall people and would be a different experience from being able to spend some time with each painting.

Those who didn't get to go can take comfort from my experience, which was a bit hellish. The huge crowds took a lot of joy out of it.
