Remember that the original builders in 1300 had no electricity nor computers . What a craftsmanship!!👍👍

The rest of the funds will be used to do work around the cathedral and to modify the square. Plus during the cleaning process inside they found forgotten paintings to restore. Scientists in different fields use the restoration as an opportunity to learn about middle ages construction knowledges forgotten and archeologists found ancient remains under the floor and will put them in a museum. Before the fire there were not enough funds to maintain perfectly the cathedral : dirty stained glasses, some stones and gargoyles fell... Now it's the opportunity to do everything

The most beautiful part about this is that every restoration was made with the same tools (made especially for this) & methods that were used when originally building the cathedral. You mentioned that you haven’t seen the restorations since the fire, but in France they regularly show it on the news & some excellent docus have come out showing the restorations by the famous « Compagnons », excellent craftsmen/women who are trained in every aspect of creation such as stone, metal, wood, sculpting, painting, stain glass & so on..

PS: It"s not "the new" Notre-Dame: it's still the same venerable old Lady that's had a major facelift ;o)

Notre-Dame (i.e., the Virgin Mary) translates to "Our Lady". The restoration is not yet completed.

Hello there from France ! (Not Paris though, Montpellier) Notre-Dame (Our Lady)for me is literally part of my heart. I visited it already but I always loved churches and cathedrals for their symbols and their architecture. Notre-Dame is a symbol, she has been standing since 850 years above our capital but also it is a symbol of the continuity of our people and of France. It has knew the Middle Ages, the discovery of Canada, the French religious wars, many French revolutions where she almost disappeared, Napoleon of course, and the two World Wars. One of the most badass moment in Notre-Dame was the liberation of Paris from the Germans. The same day, Charles de Gaulle visited the cathedral but got almost shot and he just stood like nothing happened. Notre-Dame is also known for Victor Hugo book. Since the fire, many documentaries appeared and it helped to understand the cathedral. To help you understand why it is an important cathedral, it is the place where the crown of thorns supposed west by Jesus is being held. It’s also an importance place for bells as the bell Emmanuel is the oldest one in France, created during the reign of Louis XIV ! (By the way did you know that the gothic style of architecture comes from France and from cathedrals such as Notre-Dame or Reims ?) Notre-Dame is a treasure for me and if I could I would love to work there. But there’s also many others religious sites in France that are beautiful too ! Chartres, Reims, Strasbourg, Montpellier, Mont-Saint-Michel, Lourdes.. Hope you make mot reaction on our country 😊

Evening from France! Yeah this enterprise is fascinating me too. Though I had a bit of an afterthought: there are lots of other cathedrals in France (Reims, Rouen, Amiens, Strasbourg, etc.) and other countries (Milano, Köln, etc.) that deserve some attention of their own, with each their peculiar history.

A little face-lift for the Old Lady... The frame was so old and dry that it's surprising it didn't happen before, in the end. These medieval builders and carpenters were incredible artists! I am happy that the stained glass windows survived the fire, we can rebuild a frame but stained glass windows this old... they are a treasure.

Most of cathedrals in France are named Notre-Dame (Jesus Christ's mother !) with an other word like "Notre-Dame de la Garde" (Marseille) , Notre-Dame de Rouen (my hometown ☺) etc...

When they talk about the spire (the tower) which was created in the 19th century, this is not entirely correct, an original tower was built in the original cathedral but dismantled in the 18th century because it was not in good condition. Eugène Viollet le Duc, this immense 19th century architect (a little too romantic to be precise) rebuilt it according to his own vision of the thing, higher and larger. But it's true that the 2019 images of this fire were truly heartbreaking for many people around the world, myself included.

That computer scanning was done several years before the fire by people interested in just how it was built. (No cranes back then!) Some of the funding was done by selling specially minted silver and gold coins.

Accident !!!!!
