At the concert she was dying, and knew it. She wanted to see her audience one last time who were waiting for her. She had left the stage many years ago because her voice had broken. She had a beautiful voice. In this concert it mixes the tragedy of his death, his lost voice, but also the reunion before a long departure...

There is a lot to say about the song "L'aigle Noir". Some will say that the metaphor speaks of the incetuous relationships that her father would have inflicted on her, Another version of the facts would be linked to the violence that the Nazi gestapo would have inflicted on her during the WW2 because she was Jewish. All this is still quite vague.

Happy you were able to catch the deap meaning of each of this 3 songs. FYI : Göttingen is a town in Germany. Barbara whrote the song in 1964, less thant 20 year after the WW2 where she has to hide to survive as a jewish child. This song has also a german version and has become a symbol to Franco-German reconciliation.

Göttingen is a French song by singer-songwriter-pianist Barbara, a hymn to peace, Germany, and Franco-German friendship. It should be noted that Barbara was deeply marked by her childhood in Paris, where she had to hide with her Jewish family to escape the Holocaust during the occupation of France by Germany during World War II. This song says that the children who fell at Gottingen are the children of the world.

Born Monique Serf in June 1930 in Paris, Barbara (her stage name) was and still is a legend concerning French songs. The accent you notice may be that of Paris immediately after WW2, such as "Titi parisien", "Montparnasse" or "Saint-Germain des Prés" (her singing is closer to that of Juliette Gréco's rather than Maurice Chevalier's or Edith Piaf's). She wrote songs that do belong to French culture and everyone will know, hum, or sing them. L'aigle noir (the black eagle) is her most popular song, tons of legends surround it but no, it is definitely not a song about her incestuous father. "Nantes" is about her father's death in that city in Normandy. She had lost contact with him for decades but before he passed away, he asked to see her on his deathbed. She arrived a few hours too late unfortunately, and that's the gist of this song. As a Jewish teen, she had to hide to escape Nazi repression, most of her family were murdered in death camps but she managed to escape both the German authorities and the French police. "Göttingen" is a love letter to Germany, through the city of Göttingen. Despite the horrors of WW2, Barbara says that love must overcome everything. She used to sing a lot in Germany and had a few songs translated into German, including "Göttingen". The German audience loved her, and "Göttingen" is a tribute to that friendship. "Should we be again under alarm and have to grab weapons, my heart would be crying for Göttingen", she sings, before concluding that children are children, whatever the country they are raised in. I'm still living 15 minutes away from her countryside estate. I cried when she passed away in November 1997, and I'm still crying while writing these words. We miss her. I miss her. Her nickname was La longue dame brune, the tall dark-haired lady.

Monique Serf, known as Barbara she died on November 24, 1997, another classic French singer and many beautiful songs, Her life is very sad and her father was a real a**hole who started raping her when she was 10 No one reports incest in their family . Then, in Brittany, she runs away and goes to the police station. She is listened to but her complaint is not recorded. Her father comes back to get her and suggests that she is making things up. In 1949, when she is only 19, her father leaves the family home for good, thus putting an end to the violence.

Hi Uncle D, 🌴🌞 Regarding “L'aigle Noir,” it is helpful to specify that a psychologist (...Sic!) developed this thesis according to which this song would speak of the acts of her father, of which she was a victim during her childhood. In reality, these remain wild ideas (not what she suffered, which is maybe accurate, and yet, nothing is less specific because she never spoke about it to those around her, but she'd have mentioned this fact in a very indirect way in her unfinished book of memories published after her death without her approval) about a personality lacking success who wanted to draw attention to him. In any case, thank you for reacting to my late mom's favorite female singer. Peace, folks. ☮👈😎

One fine day or perhaps one night Near a lake I had fallen asleep When suddenly, seeming to pierce the sky And coming from nowhere A black eagle appeared Slowly, with wings spread Slowly, I saw it whirl Near me, in a rustling of wings As if fallen from the sky The bird came to land He had ruby-colored eyes And feathers the color of night On his forehead, shining with a thousand lights The crowned king bird Wore a blue diamond With his beak he touched my cheek Into my hand he slid his neck It was then that I recognized him Emerging from the past He had come back to me Say the bird, oh say, take me back Let's go back to the land of yesteryear As before, in my childhood dreams To pick, trembling Stars, stars Like before, in my childhood dreams Like before, on a white cloud Like before, lighting the sun Being a rainmaker And doing wonders The black eagle with a rustle of wings Took flight to regain the sky One fine day or perhaps one night Near a lake I had fallen asleep When suddenly, seeming to pierce the sky And coming from nowhere A black eagle appeared One fine day, or was it a night? Near a lake I had fallen asleep When suddenly, seeming to pierce the sky And coming from nowhere A black eagle appeared One fine day, one night Near a lake, asleep When suddenly Emerging from nowhere A black eagle appears One fine day, one night Near a lake, asleep When suddenly He came from nowhere He appeared the black eagle One fine day, one night Near a lake, asleep He came from nowhere He appeared the black eagle

She is another french singer, like Edith Piaf, who had a tragic life and a tragic death. But as opposed to Piaf, she wrote her songs herself. It is hotly debated what the real meaning of the lyrics for 'l'aigle Noir" really is. One thing is for sure: the song is not about a black eagle.

Bonjour "Reactions by D" (bizarre comme pseudo !) Cordialement. Christian.

The song "l'aigle noir" tells of a dream. From a psychoanalytical point of view, it has been linked to the rape that her father committed on her following written confidences towards the end of his life, but the hypothesis of the connection with the song has never been validated (or invalidated) by the singer. Spending her childhood hidden in the countryside because she was Jewish during the Nazi occupation can also be an explanation, the black eagle recalling the German emblem. But interpretation is only supposition, even projection. Barbara alone could have really enlightened us on this subject. Finally, the mystery surrounding this song, its dreamlike, even symbolic side continues to exert a power of fascination on the listener.

Nice reaction. IMHO, Barbara, whose real name was Monique Serf, had one of the most mesmerizing voices, and composed the most beautiful texts, in the last century. She was an eccentric genius, definitely not interested by any kind of notoriety, and was sometimes compared with Leonard Cohen. These three songs were performed in the last part of her carreer, in Paris, probably the reason why the audience seemed so excited....
