For those reading who might wonder, the answer is yes, a human can kick hard enough to trip an airbag, based on my Google-fu and napkin math. I'm pretty sure no human can dent a car though, at the seam like that. In the middle of a panel, no problem. But those panels are much tougher where they come together. Also, I suspect the airbag sensors are in the bumper, not in the grill of the car. If you try this, kick the bumper.

Airbags will only deploy if the vehicle is running. So for this Reacher clip to happen, we have to assume that Gaetano was sitting there with his car running.

No, first Airbags reacted with Bumper Collisions without the Car running. So you can do this ^^ But yes now the Engine must be on.

Not 100% of them, one of the reasons they made that change was hooligans going around parking lots with baseball bats setting off airbags in parked cars, not all cars mind you but they enjoyed about a 25% success rate & that was enough to be entertaining for them & enough to cause auto makers to make it so that wouldn't happen any more.

This scene is really funny, but unfortunately totally impossible, even for somebody like Reacher. Modern airbags use multiple sensors to detect if the car is decelerating quickly. You basically have to generate enough force to accelerate the car backwards at 3-5g. Even a light car weighs 2000 lbs, so you'd have to generate enough force to accelerate that much mass at 3-5 times the acceleration of gravity, ie. you'd have to be able to literally kick a car hard enough that if you had kicked it from underneath it would pop up a few feet into the air! Even Reacher isn't THAT strong!

@@Cannan-w4k Sure that doesn’t mean specific fun things you see in a fictional film can’t be done in real life. For instance, in season 1 of Reacher he breaks out of zip ties by snapping them against his chest. That’s actually a real escape method you can do, you don’t even need to be as strong as Reacher. 🙂 The only reason I mentioned the air bag thing is this particular scene generated a lot of comments when it first aired asking if it was actually possible.
