During this time, Luke was an urban legend to the empire. Remember, by the end of return of the Jedi, he was responsible for the destruction of one Death Star. He was in a room with Darth Vader and the Emperor. From the perspective of any witnesses, the emperor never made it out, and he walked out with Darth Vaders dying defeated body. He‘s the only known living Jedi left. This is what is going through Moff Gideons head as he watches in terror as a cloaked force wielding figure with a lightsaber easily dismantles his army of dark troopers because he knows it could be him.

My dad passed away unexpec tedly in July of 2020. He would tell me about how he drove an hour from the farm he grew up on to the nearest movie theater in 1977 to see the original Star Wars. We used to watch the original trilogy so much it drove the rest of my family a little insane. He even upgraded our home sound system with the excuse that "it can't be too loud if we're watching Star Wars". He took me to the midnight showing premiers of all the prequels and we also saw all of the sequels in the theater together. As soon as Luke's X-wing showed up in this episode, I was overwhelmed with emotion, nostalgia, and so many memories of enjoying our favorite nerdy escape. I could just see the smile on his face as this scene played out and Luke removed his hood to reveal the character he watched on the screen as a teenager and we watched together time after time. The tears I shed that night were for the joy of seeing Luke finally done right after nearly 40 years, but more than that, they were in his memory. EDIT: Thank you all so much for the thoughtful and caring words of encouragement, and for sharing your stories with me. I'm proud to be a part of this fandom with you. It's nice to be reminded that I should't be afraid to share my experiences and that people can be genuine and kind, even if all we have in common is liking Star Wars. You guys have lifted my spirits.

Yes, it was great to see kick ass young Luke again, as until this, never thought how little of "kick ass" Luke we saw in RotJ. But, while TFA & TLJ Luke wasn't what I expected (not sure what I expected) I did get on board and loved it (while despising TRoS, I pretend it doesn't exist). I loved grumpy old Luke, as since 1977, I too have changed from being an idealistic youth to disillusioned 54 year old. But this was awesome too. Too bad there wasn't a pre-isolation Luke movie to bridge the gap, although guess we're kinda getting that now. They really are making all SW fans happy. Lol.

@@TEDSHOTTHAT again, Johnson did not put Luke on that island OR in that costume makeup. JJ did. Like it or not, Johnson merely tried to make sense of JJ's set up. Am I the only one who remembers Luke in TFA? Did people blink and miss him? Lol.

@@etherealtb6021 true and tfa sucks for that, but rian johnson could have redeemed that luke, except he made luke an old whiney losser hermit instead of a super wise and powerful jedi master that was on the island for a cool reason. @etherealtb60214 жыл бұрын
@@awesomeatronikwell, Johnson MAY have responded better if people weren't screeching he ruined their childhoods! That had to be a shock. He should've responded better, but that was an honest response to people hating on something you'd worked hard on for 3 years & expected people to love, especially after the rave critical reviews. And Luke eventually DID kick ass & save everyone in TLJ, in an awesome, heroic way! And Luke was ALWAYS whiney! Watch ANH & most of TESB again oh and the cut scenes in ANH. LOTS of whining from Luke! This was NOT out of character to revert to that. It wasn't the only option for Luke, it could've gone as you said. But it was 100% in character and only "ruined" Luke for those who didn't understand (or willfully forget) where the character started ANH & only remember where he ended in TRotJ. There's a difference between what you or I would've written and something being "bad" or "wrong". I think we can all agree TRoS really was actually bad, wrong and a large pile of poo!

Yes. This is exactly what was promised by Return of the Jedi. Even during that movie, he was clearly not the absolute bad ass that we just saw, but at the beginning of his path to being bad ass. In Star Wars (I'm always going to use the title of the movie as when I saw it in the theater. "Star Wars: A New Hope" is fine for those saw that movie years later.), Luke was clearly on the hero's journey, but still had more than a bit of the whiny kid in him. In Empire, he had become a leader, but still was impatient and "reckless" just as Yoda said. In Return of the Jedi, his powers had grown, but it wasn't until he tossed his lightsaber aside and refused to kill Darth Vader that he truly became a Jedi. That serenity of purpose is what allowed him to reach the level of mastery of the Force that we saw here. He had all of the power of Darth Vader without any of the anger and hatred. Finally, there is balance in the Force. *I enjoyed the sequel trilogy as entertainment, but I am with most fans that grew up with the original trilogy that don't like the direction that the Disney era movies took the post-Return of the Jedi galaxy. They did totally mess up everything, to be honest. I've seen some decent commentary on tweaks to the storyline that may have helped, but the problems are not fixable. I am fully supportive of one theory reaction to recent Star Wars that suggests that they could (and should) find a way to make the whole sequel trilogy become a "this is what might have been" thing, rather than canon that all movies and TV set in the post-RotJ era have to build toward. That video referred to things in the Clone Wars and Rebels series that could be used to make that happen in a way that isn't "Dallas"- level, "The whole season was a dream", nonsense, but I still haven't gotten around to watching those.

I’m crying so hard. Luke is my hero. I didn’t grow up with him but watching Star Wars for the first time six years ago, I fell in love by Return of the Jedi; the only one who had the heart to save Anakin, and in turn help save the entire Galaxy. I fully expected Luke to kill Vader but instead got a beautiful, powerful message of forgiveness, empathy, and HOPE. THIS is the Luke we deserve, and the fact that it’s Mark Hamill makes this 100x better. ❤ I can only image the joy life-long fans felt at this moment ! The way they set it up too was masterful. I knew at once from the X-wing, but then we slowly reveal the hood, the green saber, the hand, and then by the actual reveal- we know who it is! SO GOOD 😭

You know why this moment is so special? Because as a character, we have been with Luke starting out as a farmer on Tatooine. We were with him when he first encountered Obi-Wan, when his Uncle and Aunt were murdered. We were there with him when he met Han and Chewy, saved the Princess, blew up the Death Star, almost died on Hoth, traveled to Dagobah to train with Yoda, discovered who is father was, lost Han to Jabba, confronted his father, and was there when the second Death Star blew up. We have been through the ups and downs with Luke. He isn't a Mary-Sue who is just perfect from the beginning. He made mistakes, let people down, wasn't there for his friends, lost his arm/hand, etc. Hell, he didn't even defeat Palpatine. Palpatine was absolutely going to kill him. His father saved him. Luke is an immensely more interesting character than anyone in all of the Disney movies. And when we see this character coming down the hall, we love him. We route for him because we identify with him. We have been on his journey with him.

Is it better than one of the worst trilogies ever? Yes, it is. Is it good? Fuck no. You just lowered your standarts so much that anything that's not literal vomit works for you. And that's sad, because it means you already lost and it means you will never get anything better. But right, there's Boba Fett! And Ashoka! Very very sad individuals, I don't get what the fuss is all about, and why people can get so obsessed over a piece of movie pop culture. I like star wars just as much as the next guy (actually, apparently I don't) but surely there is more realistic things in life to be concerned about than an old sci fi movie from the 70's and let it be such important part of your life that it means to you enough to make you cry or get emotional. @Destination Unknown of course he should have character development, but not “development” that undoes what he already learned in the OG trilogy. That’s “un-development.” It’s been established that he has overcome his fear of the dark side, so allowing that to be the reason he almost kills his nephew (when he wouldn’t even kill the Sith Lord Darth Vader just because he was his dad) doesn’t really make sense. He absolutely should have character development, but not like that. It could’ve even still been about realizing the Jedi weren’t all they were hyped up to be, something else like that. But not fear, especially of the darkside. If that makes sense 🤔

Obviously mirrors the Rogue One scene, with Luke going through the droids as easily as Vader did the Rebels. His fighting style is much like Anakin in his prime. The shot of him from the back as he's entering, wearing the black, hooded cloak, looks much like Anakin/Vader marching into the Jedi Temple. The door opening to reveal him as he steps in is very similar to Vader's first entrance in New Hope.

Luke always shared his fathers skill and passion, but unlike Anakin, who was limited by the Jedi into believing the force was one sided, Luke was taught to see the Light and the Dark in everyone. They are two men of the same cloth, but Luke found hope and calming peace where his father had found seething anger and unkempt rage. Anakin was both a victim of Jedi standards and Palpatine's manipulation, and so Luke was his only hope. Anakin saw his once faith in the light in his son's eyes, and so he saw the light within himself.
