A lot of people yell at MCs for sticking around. But gotta remember, they don't know they're in a zombie show. All Sarah knew was her elderly neighbors dog was out, and they weren't responding. Same with Denise the neighbor. She just hears Joel yell at her, then run over the elderly couple, of course she gonna check on them.

Bruh you got jets and helicopters flying above your head, transmitters in the street explode, police sirens everywhere, you hear gunshots and screams all over the place, TVs running emergency broadcasts, your neighbor yells you to go inside and lock the doors in a very panicked way and you still need a clue to understand that something bad is going down? Denise had tons of clues to NOT to check them but after all, humans am i rite? No offense btw, i'm just saying just for the sake of debating

I remember someone saying that in the initial stages of the Cordyceps infection the host is actually still aware of their surroundings and is still conscious. So basically they knew they were attacking and infecting people, especially their loved ones, and couldn't do shit to stop themselves. I can't imagine what was going through the mind of that old lady as she was attacking her beloved husband of how many decades. You could actually see a bit of despair in her eyes as she stared at Sarah before trying to attack her too.

It would only be a runner at this point in time, the variations in the infected are different stages in the infection, as this is the initial outbreak no infected would have lasted long enough to become any of the later stages.
