Genuinely one of the best "bottle" episodes of any show I've ever seen. Tennant absolutely brings his best here, the powerlessness and frustration, the FEAR, it's not something we get to see often from the Doctor, and it's visceral here. Then Lesley Sharp NAILS the unsettling hunger of the creature. It could have been completely ridiculous, but because of the acting it remains one of those episodes of tv that just hangs out in my brain.

Fun Fact: The Professor, older man with the glasses is David Troughton, son of Patrick Troughton who played the Doctor from 1966 - 1969. David also appeared in his dad’s last ever story, The War Games. He appeared in a third Doctor’s story, The Curse of Peladon (1972), playing King Peladon!

I think the MVP was deedee for this one. The hostess was against the doctor during this and was in favour of throwing someone out, and only redeemed herself at the end. but deedee pretty much had faith in the doctor the whole ride.

Favorite episode at-least in this season, some say in the entire show but for me I really enjoyed it, it shows how you don't always need a big budget or huge large special effects for stuff if you have a great premise and great writing, this episode had only 2-sets, 10 cast members not like other episodes before it, really shows how great and talented the writers are to pull off a great sub-storyline that is generally creepy (Traumatized me as a kid). The fact that at the end there was no comedic dialogue really between the two, Donna tries to make the Doctor laugh but instead, he just goes "No don't....don't.." shows that the Doctor truly didn't know what this entity was and was terrified of it, one of those times the Doctor truly didn't know anything about the monster (Fear of the unknown) and because he nearly truly died.

She's the main actress on afterlife where she's a psychic who sees the dead. Very very good show. Quite realistic with the way they explore the psychological effects it would have on someone like that and no one believing them . I ended up buying the series on dvd from cex.

I love that the bus is in darkness, except Lesley Sharp is lit. A giveaway that she is still possessed is when she moved to the back of the bus, she's still the only character to be lit - the Doctor and other passengers aren't. The DOP on this did a great job.

Honestly Jethro’s parents were the most infuriating people in this whole episode no wonder he kept a distance from them. Sure they might seem nice but when push comes to shove they lost their bloody minds. Even their teen son was more composed and said it’s incorrect to throw people outside the ship. Also his mom was trying to gaslight Jethro into believing that the saw the creature love from Sky to the Doctor. They did not see crap😂 The only thing they clearly see it’s people mimicking each other and the Doctor becoming paralyzed.😅

The fact this was done with virtually no money with most of it on one set with hardly any VFX made it so amazing. This episode didn't feature Donna except at the beginning and end. The next does the same but with only Donna. That's not a spoiler, by the way.

This was one of the most interesting Doctor Who stories, at least. It's like Lord of the Flies, what happens when humans are closed in together. The most terrifying monster in this episode is the other people.
@leestirling4623

Nah the most terrifying monster was the actual monster turning the people against each other. People are naturally scared of the unknown as are all other animals due to not knowing the risks. That's the basic natural survival instinct.

2:17 Look at the bottom of the phone handset that Donna is using... That is a socket to accommodate a coiled phone cord. They used a corded phone, removed the wire, and pretended it was cordless without blocking the friggin' hole, and pointed the camera right at it! That's how much they are convinced that you are NOT paying attention, folks! lol Admittedly, I only saw it because I used to sell phones for a living... ;-]

One thing that always makes us, the viewers, feel like everything will be okay is because the Doctor ALWAYS knows what's going on, even if he doesn't know what to do about it right off. They take that feeling of safety away from us in this episode because the Doctor really has no idea what is happening... and he has no idea what to do about it either. And then he mob mentality takes over, and if it wasn't for the hostess, the Doctor would have been killed - permanently - because no amount of regenerations would have saved him from the combination of the fatal sun and the murderous alien.

How delightful! I had a rubbish day in work so it was nice popping home and finding this waiting. Such an intense, claustrophobic episode. It's awesome seeing that you get right into the drama of the episode. If I remember correctly Russell T Davies wrote this one quite quick as the originally planned episode fell through. Awesome stuff. You've got a couple more crackers to come before the end. Turn Left is another belter.

This episode is absolutely fantastic, but it has one of my biggest pet peeves in storytelling: a scientist or someone of a similar nature declaring something is impossible, even when presented with evidence to the contrary. That's not how science works! If he was actually a scientific professor worth anything he would quickly realize that there IS some way for something to live on the planet that simply hasn't been discovered yet.
@overlydramaticpanda
@overlydramaticpanda 2 ай бұрын
That's kind of the entire point of his character though. All the passengers (and the Hostess) serve as a foil for the Doctor in some way. In this case, the Doctor is intelligent enough to realise that true intelligence is the understanding of the absence of knowledge, that's why he's always excited whenever he uncovers something completely new to him or is presented with a way of seeing something that had never occurred to him before; he is always wanting to expand his knowledge, even if it means discovering something that contradicts what he thinks he already knows. The Professor, on the other hand, is convinced that he already knows everything there is to know about Midnight and anything that contradicts his own knowledge is an impossibility. He's effectively reached the point where his intelligence has stagnated because he no longer places any value in gaining knowledge beyond his own experience or understanding - it's why he also doesn't value Deedee's knowledge of mechanics. He's *not* a scientific professor worth anything, he's not any more intellectually superior than the rest of the humans on the bus despite his constant air of superiority during the whole ordeal, and, like the rest of them having to confront the worst of themselves after the Entity is gone, it's part of what he has to come to terms with at the end.

this episode....always stresses me out, humanitys stupidity gets exposed, in such a contained environment, everyone should have sat down, chilled, n looked up this ep on the screen until they got rescued - which makes no sense but its d octor who :p so anything goes also when she steals his voice "look, i can move, i can feel again" those aliens must have went through something really messed up, but still one managed to hold on, as some kind of spirit, the fact its never explained makes it better

Well I think by then the alien is pretending to be sky. Because it was a shadow creature running outside. It might feel cold and lonely but why was it only alone? Where are the others? Did it kill them? Or it’s the only survivor of that kind of harsh environment with no physical body?

This episode always made me uncomfortable. Great acting and a great storyline and so on, but I had nightmares from this. Imagine being surrounded by scared, irrational, always screaming people anywhere, let alone in a high-pressure situation. That is a disaster waiting to happen. Scared people like this will be aggressive and triggered by basically nothing to the point that you cannot say anything or they will turn on you and push you. Maybe they will even expect you to read their minds and act upon their thoughts and expectations or they will feel justified in treating you badly. I can understand being scared, but this behavior is not justified or logical and is outright toxic. It made me scared of getting into situations like this where people are aggressive and without reason or logic. Or at least being trapped in such a situation alone.
