@fallofcamelot5 жыл бұрын
What I love about this episode is that the Doctor completely loses. Everything that the Doctor is good at is of no use in this episode, his formidable force of will isn’t enough to resist, his leadership ability is totally undermined and his knowledge is of no use as he has no understanding of the nature of the threat. To see the normally in control, unflappable Doctor so completely beaten is what makes this episode special to me. In the end it is only his good nature that wins the day as it allows a moment of clarity to overcome the problem. In reality though this is the story where the Doctor is beaten by a superior opponent, for once it’s the Doctor who needs to be saved. As for whether the creature was influencing the passengers? Maybe, maybe not. What is more interesting to me is that this is an example of how fear and paranoia can overtake rational thought. That normally pleasant people will do horrible things if the circumstances are right is a phenomemon that has been studied extensively and there are plenty of case studies of it. This episode puts the Doctor as a walking example of compassion and rationality and those exact qualities seperate him from the group, that makes him an easy target for the creature and by extension the group. What is scary about this is that this isn’t a monster to overcome, it’s basic human nature. This episode explores the dark part of ourselves, that part that seeks to exclude, to scapegoat, to victimise. It is a part of all of us and the Doctor can’t fight that. In the end it almost killed him. That’s far more frightening to me than any Sontaran or Dalek.
@crystald.69025 жыл бұрын
Iain Hunter-Fennell good points and if you think about it one of the Doctor’s most powerful weapons are his words. It’s scary to see what can happen when you take someone’s voice, especially someone who uses that voice so well like the Doctor.

All great points though for me this is also a bit of a deconstruction of the Doctor as a character. Because as frustrating-then-scarily-mob-like as they are, the other passengers are sort of right about him IMO - he _is_ arrogant and he _does_ expect people (often complete strangers) to just jump to it, as he puts it, "Because i'm clever !". Part of RTD's achievement with this episode for me is how it strips away all the Doctor's "tricks", his usual techniques for dealing with people and situations and turns those skills against him. Also worth remembering that though it shows us at our worst it also shows what we can do when we listen to the "better angels of our nature" - without the flight attendant's sacrifice, 10 would be dead. Well, the flight attendant and a luckily placed Converse toe ;).

@Grizzly015 жыл бұрын
I don't think the Doctor was TOTALLY beaten though. The well placed foot snagging on the seat, for example. Then, when Sky starts saying 'molto bene' and 'allons-y', I get the impression that the Doctor is forcing her to say that, through sheer willpower. His wide-eyed look towards the hostess as those words come out is saying "Come on! Work it out! Remember!" It was an utterly desperate, last ditch attempt, but he saved himself. Although I doubt he intended it to be at the cost of the hostess's life.

Loved the reaction - particularly when you noticed Sky speaking before the Doctor! 😂 I feel like this episode was a really good depiction of mob mentality and how fear drives us to be hypocritical or grasp for comfort. Like how the woman immediately switches from wanting to throw Sky from the carriage to wanting to believe she'd been fixed and the Doctor was the problem now (because she dislikes him). Or how she said she knew Sky was the problem all along - bullshit! It's super frustrating - I agree! But I also feel like it's really realistic. The voices of reason kept being drowned out by the vocal ones with extreme opinions. It's funny how they turn against the Doctor and his expertise, probably because they perceive his cleverness as a threat to their emotion based opinions, their masculinity etc. They just didn't want to listen to logic because they were too afraid or too proud. The Doctor really loves humans but I feel like this episode is one where he has to face their flaws. Jethro, the kid, was played by Colin Morgan who was beloved for his role as the lead in Merlin. Have you seen that show? No one reacts to it on KZbin and I'd love to see someone do it (maybe just the first ep? 😉 - dw, you must be super busy getting all these eps out. ❤️)

@Juliette Reacts While I hate leaping to the mob's defense, this episode does show certain aspects of the Doctor that we usually take for granted can possibly be misconstrued and taken the wrong way by the wrong crowd: his tendency to belittle those less intelligent than himself, his sometimes inappropriate glee and fascination with the unknown and danger, mysteriously appearing out of the blue and disappearing just as quick, his secrecy with his name, even referring to himself as other or alien which thankfully the mob didn't dwell on any further than they did.

1:12 The reason for that is actually quite clever. Long story short to have money for the season finally (you will see why) they had to make cuts. If you notice this episode only had one major cost, the sound effects, it was filmed on a single set and is just pure story telling at its best. This episode was filmed at the same time as "turn left". While CT was filming that, DT was filming this thus saving A LOT of money for the last episode. Also another fun fact this season shows a lot of Classic who relationships. The prof being the son of the 2nd. And we may see more in future episodes. Final fun fact the actor who played Jefro (this was his first BBC appearance) within a year becomes the lead actor for Merlin. An Amazing program you should consider watching also considering he becomes the husband of Morgana on Merlin who currently plays Lina Luthor in Supergirl.

Loved your reaction! This is a fantastic episode, and I love how I think you got the main point of it. That humans can be as bad as any villain. We can so easily turn against one another when we are scared and confined. It is quite dark in that aspect. The brilliance of this episode is how, in my eyes, understandable the people in the bus are. So many reactors see their reactions as ridiculous, shouting "Just stop talking!" at the screen and such, but if I was in that scenario, I would find not saying a word with everyone near impossible. And if this one random guy took control, gave us no information of who he was, acted so condescendingly and actually did nothing to help, just talked hot air, I would start to get angry and suspect something of him too. Detach yourself from the Doctor and objectively this all makes sense, with a wondrous villain and concept, genius music and direction, a very tight script and a top performance from David Tennant, this is a phenomenal episode of the show, showing not just the frailty of the human moral compass when placed under fear, but also the Doctor's shortcomings. This is one of few episodes where he loses, he doesn't figure anything out, he doesn't save the day, and those he's trying to save turn on him. Great stuff.

Especially when it comes to the paranormal. Something falls off a shelf? Maybe it was just unbalanced See a shadow out of the corner of your eye? Nah just your mind playing tricks on you. the hairs stand up on the back of your neck like you know you are being watched? No, you can't be.... You are alone... Our brains will force us to reject our own eyes and ears if it cannot explain something with rational thought and that is EXACTLY what happened here. Nobody kenw what was happening, so they rejected the doctors advice to think and observe and jumped to their own conclusions, and as it was a mob mentality there was nothing he could do. Fear took over and convinced them the threat was in the doctor.

Great reaction! I love how you understood the situation and how you got frustrated towards the passengers. This episode has a great tense factor not only because of the hidden identity of the creature/alien but it also showcases the worst of humanity. The way they acted hysterically, the way they jumped to conclusions which later leads to them losing their common senses because of the fear, the unknown and doubts overtaking their ability to think clearly is very engaging to watch. It’s also frustrating because The Doctor is put in a helpless situation to the point where he becomes vulnerable and in danger of losing his life by humanity. Your reaction to Rose popping up on the monitor is great. I’ve seen some reactors miss that part cos it’s such a quick moment. I’m so glad you caught that! This was a great companion lite episode. The behaviour of the humans in this can make you feel really uncomfortable because of how real it can be. Your mentioning of how easy it is for people to follow instead of take charge in a hectic situation is a really good point too. Dee Dee is an example of that. She was defending The Doctor when he was possessed but got shut down by the hysterical people who were the majority with the loudest voices in favour of throwing The Doctor out. The hostess was the real hero in the end and the fact that they never find out her name is a sad realisation.

A fantastic thriller spent entirely in one room. Can the guy who wrote this masterpiece teach writing classes to certain people?

Hello again since you are getting thru these series so fast here are my suggestions for series 6. Once again I'm avoiding mentioning the episode titles... there are quite a few because series 6 was of such a high standard. The following are what I think are the episodes that you must react to (at the very least): 06x01, 06x02, 06x04, 06x07, 06x08, 06x10, 06x13 If you could fit in both of 06x05 and 06x06 as well that would be great. If you can't do both of them then I would recommend 06x06 BTW just letting you know in advance - Series 7 has a bit more of a complicated running order with a Christmas special in the middle of it and some special mini episodes and episodes after it that you must react to. I will go into more detail when I post my suggestions for series 7.

I HATE this episode. Not because it isn't amazing. It is very well done. But it freaks the HELL out of me and I often avoid it. But I think I am ready to see your reaction to it. Next episode is one of the best.

Humans are funny old things. We're definitely individuals, but do have a tendancy, under stress or with certain emotional cues, to behave as mobs. If you've never seen it, I strongly recommend a film (or the TV version) Quatermass and the Pit - it goes into this aspect of human nature with a fascinating sci-fi twist.

I will try to check it out.

What you're discussing about how humans are prey to mob mentality was brilliantly explored in the Twilight Zone episode "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street"

This is one of my favourite episodes. A brilliant display of how paranoia plus a little bit of xenophobia can make people do terrible things. Here are some behind the scenes footage that shows how those copying speech scenes were shot. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z565ZHV4o9FmaLs

Hello Shayla. You’re almost at the end of series 4, so there are 5 Specials you should react to before you start series 5. The the first of this episodes and the last 2 are must see/react. The 2nd/3rd could be skip reaction wise.

A perfexct example of how paranoia sets in. When people are scared they don't thinkand the doctors power is thepower to out think. he can't out think a mob... And so he lost.

this episode is like a compact version of the crucible, with witches replaced with the monster and proctor or Rebecca nurse with the doctor. hysterical mob mentality turning everyone against the only one thinking clearly
