One of the things that I think really hurt the first gen groups and artists is that the videos are really terrible quality - look like they were shot through a potato. I remember checking out Shinhwa mvs several years ago and loved the songs but: 1. Some of the wardrobe choices were really terrible; 2. The mvs not looking like they were even 360 p. (The worse quality mv by far, though is Kim Gun Mo's Wrongful Encounter).
@xiuying1212
@xiuying1212 2 жыл бұрын
Completely agree! If CMR were to react though, I feel like it would have to be tailored like "how would this song be produced now--a-days" or have back to back MVs comparing the old song versus a new song that feels inspired by the old song (remakes perhaps like one of the IU episodes). Otherwise, the reactors wouldn't have enough to say (positively).

Eng translation) When this song came out, there was a big tragic event in Korea. Young children aged 5-6 years who went on a school camp died due to a fire. The main cause of this incident was the camp facility that didn't pay attention to safety, all workers related to that facility, and teachers who drank all night. In order to commemorate the poor children who passed, SM song writer, Yoo Young-jin wrote this song. The song's title, "I yah" is a homonym of a korean word for child.

I love how this just means that SM Entertainment MEANT to do this kind of music, and mastered it through years to create what we think now as bangers. Not the thinking that “Hey experimental music is a trendy now, let’s use this”, they didn’t master it in one day but almost 2 decades. It’s funny how we today call experimental music as trendy, wherein fact it has been there all along, just resurfacing here and there, I guess that’s why it’s never boring to hear.

They often mixed different kind of music, classical x rock x pop x hip hop. For this kind of song like I Yah, you can listen for their other songs like " Outside of Castle that talk about disable people whom iginored by society, Line Up that talk about people style whom being control by capitalism or something like that, Get It Up that talk about childern of war or Wolf and Sheep that talk about how people being divided by other power without they notice it (I think its about unification), Natural Born Killer, etc.... There's many of up beat like this by H.O.T that I cant write down. And I suggest you to listen for ALL ALONE that written and composed by Tony. Its another mixed of classical x modern music, the lyrics are sad though.. its about how the treatment of poor students without money they got at school. What I love about H.O.T is not just their diversity in music, but also the message that they put in to their songs. They have many of great songs with great messsages that we hard to find now days.

Thank you so much for this reaction! As someone who lives in a third world country with many injustices, I like to listen to H.O.T some times (along with other 1st gen artists too) because they have some of my favorite lyrics and the most comforting ones too, since they talked about topics as they are without having to disguise them. And topics that are still valid to this day. The whole set of decisions they made in the song represents rage perfectly and during Kangta's solo you can feel even helplessness. I don't see that kind of strong approach today in kpop. Sometimes the topics are discussed but in a softer way. Compared to these groups that apparently didn't mind being censored on music shows (that tone of censorship literally sounded on top of words considered too harsh or rude lol). That lack of fear of being censored I don't know where it went today but I admire it. It seems that the Lee So Man who worked with these guys back then was different from the Lee So Man now tho.... Anyway, I'm glad you checked this out 💜💜

I agree! I find it kind of ironic that the original anti-establishment, against-status-quo messages, but SM became the establishment itself... Since this came after Seo Taiji... and seeing how SM's products are like these days... makes me wonder, even H.O.T. type music and lyrics they originally put out, how much of it was really admiring and respecting the OG message, or it was just all business, that THAT was what was trending at the time, so just banked on it. Well, hopefully it was the former, but doesn't change the fact the company and owner kind of moved away from the original message and sincerity it had once put out.
@iwjmp
@iwjmp 2 жыл бұрын
@@mollyfurball yeah sometimes I have that doubt too and I feel like it could have been just business as well. My theory is that in the case of H.O.T it was a mixture of both. Because reading some interviews and the way in which they explained the meaning of their lyrics or decisions that the group itself made, it seemed that the members of the group, or at least those who were most involved in composing and writing, were quite sincere in terms of the lyrics and the meaning of the songs. Since it was something that both young people like them wanted to say, and young people like them wanted to hear. And perhaps precisely for that reason SM let them do it since it was something that teens eager to feel freer and not silenced, would listen and buy, plus the idol formula was attractive. Therefore censorship instead of being a threat was something that helped them, it was something that represented that struggle of "wanting to be who you are and not being able to because conservative society wouldn't let you". Plus they already knew it wouldn't affect their popularity because Seo Taiji & Boys wasn't affected either. So at the end of the day it was economically convenient for them, which is probably not the case today for so many reasons...

Ever-evolving through the times, you can hear more European-influenced SMP in TBSK's Mirotic, SNSD's I Got A Boy, EXO's MAMA, and even Red Velvet's Psycho. First of all, thanks to your reaction I finally found out that SM remastered H.O.T's I Yah music video because I Yah is my most favorite song from them and I really really want you guys to react to the 1st generation idols like S.E.S, Shinhwa, Sechskies, Fin K.L, and many more. And in my honest opinion this is probably the best H.O.T song and one of the best Yoo Youngjin's composed song. I have no idea that he used some classical song as a sample for I Yah and I think it's really genius of him. Anyways thank you for your reaction. I had so much fun and learn a lot about music from all of you.

Actually HOT confirmed this song is indeed about the kindergarten fire tragedy in the lyrics: "Who gave the permission to turn out the children's flame that couldn't even be burnt" "I'm gonn' catch you ain't no turnin' back you won't be burnin' my kids" "They have been neglected, disregarded not been protected they couldn't even be protected of the rights they have been born with" "Do you say it. One for the kid, two for the all.What have we protected with the constitution we made? Nothing nothing" I been a fan of HOT since a long time because of this, they are high five of teenagers their music was a way to show what teenagers feel and what they think. They were a rebellion against the world of adults and honestly they helped me a lot during hard times, it's amazing to see even today people are appreciating HOT's work

About to watch this, and all I’m praying for is that you guys looked better into early SM music. This is one of my favourite H.O.T songs. And I feel like people who weren’t familiar tend to make fun of it, and just diminishes how really good it was esp for that time period. It’s called SMP, there are a lot of iconic SMP songs PLEASE look into it.

When that song was made, there was a big accident in Korea. Many young children had died in a building on fire. Buildings built without complying with building regulations, and institutions that approved them. Lack of construction materials and safety requirements that have not been flame-retardant. Eventually, the children died in an instant because of the selfishness of the adults. This song is for the children who died then.
@aznpikachu215
@aznpikachu215 Ай бұрын
The song was written in dedication to the 23 kindergarteners who died in a schoolfire. The news of the kindergarteners hit Korea hard, and it rose up serious discussions about the society in general in their treatment of their children. This was largely in part because of the fact that the children were LOCKED IN the room that caught on fire, while the supervisors were out (apparently, not supervising). The tragic death of young kindergarteners influenced H.O.T.'s 'I yah!' which not only talks about the kindergarteners' unfair deaths but also about the treatment of children in the Korean society in general.

As Umu explained, SM doing a remastering projects and reaching out to YT channels, so as SM rolls out more remastered oldies, I'm sure more collab deal will come and the reactors will for sure view it. So I think for sure you will get to see more! Good for fans that like the OG materials, and a way for SM (and YG does collab deals too) to make more bank by utilizing vault contents (ah! Disney vault!).

Back in 90’s, korean society, in general, was very different than it is now. Society taught kids self-discipline through physical punishment. With today’s standard, every single school teacher would be in jail. Korean teenagers, especially boys, were very very suppressed. It was only 1993 when korea was finally liberated from authoritarian regime. Until then, the whole society ran like a military. These songs were deemed “inappropriate,” you get in trouble just by listening to these songs in CD. For example, there was a similar song in HOT’s earlier album that was even banned meaning they can’t play the song in any type of media (TV, radio, etc). However, these songs made HOT popular among teenage boys. Usually boy idol groups are popular among teenage girls because they sing dandy love songs. HOT also did that. But they also had rage-against-machine-like songs like this, which appealed to teenage boys making them popular to all teenagers. Imagine going to a school worrying about getting beaten up by your teachers with ice-hockey stick for listening to songs like this. That was only 20 years ago. One of my middle school teacher even said that he studies WW2 so he can learn their torture system so he can apply those to us. I clearly remember teachers swearing and yelling that the nation’s education system is getting fuxked up and was at the verge of collapsing when the government banned any kind of physical punishment in school. He was like “how can we control you fuxks without physical punishments?? It’s end of education system in korea.” even then, it didnt go away quickly. In 2010, an elementary student with hemophilia was beaten badly by a teacher who was notorious for harsh punishments. I am not talking about one psycho. This was a norm back then. It has gotten much better now, but that was a society that we (now in 30’s and 40’s) and older generation lived through. Groups like seo tae ji and HOT were basically saying “you adults are telling us to be a good student, good member of society... but you do that by locking us into a cage and beating us if we dont behave. And yet, you dont even take care of us. Look at these kids burnt to death.” Music is a reflection of society (and fandom is a reaction of society) at that particular era. I just wanted to add a little bit of layers to what teenagers had to endure at that time to explain why these idols group have songs like this in their album. Also, if you see korean immigrants who are in their 40’s or 50’s, ask them why they moved to the states. I bet most of them would say that they didnt want their children to go through the same educational system they had to go through.

Thank you for reacting to this! I used to be an H.O.T fan in my teens, I can attest that they were the coolest idol group in the world at that time. Their "We are the future" song is about school bullying problem, but sadly the awareness does not really change the society at all.

As the H.O.T. generation, I think SM was so addicted to mix classic and rock that time( T.O.P by shinhwa was also those type of music ) so.... yes it was very interesting challenge, was not normal style that time, too. Perhaps, in my opinion, Producer Yoo Young-jin's use of Mozart's music is "power that oppresses with force," and his use of Beethoven's music is "not listening to the voices of the weak." So, can we think of it as “the power class that doesn’t listen to their voices”? That’s why I really like producer Yoo Young-jin!!
