The music video concept of "vibrato" is deeper that you think. Being trapped inside the glass box with the cameras around them. And telling people if you what sexy like "marionette" here it is times ten.
@Novadestin6 жыл бұрын
Exactly, Stellar has always been very meta about how the public views/treats them and other female idols (it is certainly NOT just with Sting as implied in this video!). When Vibrato came out, they talked about how people were asking why it took them so long to have a comeback... they'd had TWO in between Marionette and Vibrato! But, they were quite literally invisible to people if they weren't being overly sexy - and, yes, it had to be super in your face sexy too because Mask (which came right after Marionette) was also quite sexy and was completely ignored. Then they did Fool, which was very much a commentary on how they had been treated/viewed and was a message to their fans that despite the hate they (and other female idols) were getting, they would keep going because they were "fools" for their fans. Vibrato and Sting just continued the trend. With Stellar, knowing what they have gone through, about the idol industry, and Korean culture in general is an important part of understanding the imagery they use in their MVs. And, to be clear, it's not just the sexy stuff either, it's about the hate idols get in general; like when Study came out (before Marionette) and they got hate because people thought they were telling them to study despite exams having ended the week before. It's ridiculous, and Stellar put all of that front and center.

The thing with vibrato is that before that comeback, they had two different comebacks after marionette which where completly ignored by the public. They did tone it done with the sexy after the backlash from marionette, but noone cared. So to actually survive in the industry they had to turn back to the extremly sexual theme. Yes it may have been a bit much, but they needed attention, and vibrato gave them that (even if it was mainly negative). So i completly agree with what jarod said!

I really appreciate how you handled the situation around them. I love stellar with all my heart, and if these mvs (more vibrato than sting which was a lot more tame) were something the girls were actively comfortable with and not something they felt pretty much forced to go I would love! Because they are gorgeous and well directed and enjoyable, but hard to enjoy when you know these girls might have felt like they HAD to do them or else... I’m glad they got to promote something like Crying (and Sting honestly wasn’t over the top it’s my fave tbh) and were able to be more comfortable and were finally able to get away from their company. Thank you again!!!

YES YES YES everything you said here!!!! I have enjoyed their music quite a lot whenever I hear it, but can't watch their videos often the way I'd like, because it makes me sad to think that the choice to be sexual/sexy may not have actually been much of a choice for them at all :/ If they had chosen to do this because it made them happy or made them feel empowered in some way, I'd be way more comfortable with it. But because that may not be the case, I worry about them and focus on how far society has yet to progress for the better and the current extreme issue of objectification of women. Though I will never shame or blame anyone for doing what they must to make ends meet and what they need, I really hope most of the stress or pressure to be or act in certain ways that may not make them happy will end, and I wish for the members to be so successful and happy and comfortable in the future in whatever careers or activities they pursue from now on

@kanayaker6 жыл бұрын
Taylor Hinkes I believe the members have said publicly that they were uncomfortable with the sexuality of their MVs and image, but did it because their company insisted. Unapologetic or not, symbolic or not, it's important to acknowledge that they didn't really have a choice and didn't really like being sexy.
@mostacheo6 жыл бұрын
kanayaker oh I didn’t know that!! That’s a shame :( it’s not fair to be given that ultimatum in the slightest. It sucks what women have to be forced to be provocative in order to gain any attention (good or bad).However I hope they’ve been able to be proud of what they’ve created! Because it really is awesome music and production.
@emmmmz6 жыл бұрын
kanayaker Yes, I believe they said that during Marionette but around the time Vibrato and especially Sting came around they said that they were becoming more confident with the sexy concept and wanted to use it to send a message, or something like that. Even Hyuna wasn't comfortable with her concept at first, more so how the public would react (and she was very young when she started), but she said that she grew to appreciate it and now wanted to use it to give confidence to other woman and bring to attention the fact that woman can be sexy without sacrificing their dignity. Not sure if they relate enough, as Stellar's company was really horrible to them... Although I do know that the company didn't think they could ever be sexy in the first place, and after the girls proved they could they really pushed it (such as giving the girls thin thong strings for the iconic Vibrato outfit, where the girls had to threaten to leave the company if they don't make the bands thicker)
@hslpt36 жыл бұрын
if they're 'becoming confident' with sexy concepts after being forced to do it multiple times and not liking it, i wouldn't call it becoming more confident or owning their sexuality...more like...getting used to n becoming desensitized...and that's not necessarily a great thing but seemed to be overlooked by many because that's how we are too. i've seen many who said they hated a song but grew to love it after listening to it a couple times or even a hundred times and encourage others who hate the song to do the same as them...like....why should we keep doing something we hate in order to 'grow love'? i feel like people are confusing themselves a lot between growing to like and tolerating/brainwash/just being desensitized. that's not healthy.

Its entertainment for us, but its business for them....
@antiawarenessawarenessclub6 жыл бұрын
Kpop was pretty much oversaturated from 2012 onwards, and had a reputation of being more about visuals than music. The korean public wouldn’t bother looking at idols if they wanted to find good songs to listen. I think it’s possible that if Stellar didn’t present their music as “idol music”, they could’ve attracted an audience who wasn’t just interested in their bodies
@managersejinstan15236 жыл бұрын
You won't succeed in KPop unless you've got a company to back you up. The company makes the group for the majority of KPop. GFriend and BTS are anomalies. They succeeded by themselves and now no third gen girl group can touch GFriend's music show wins and no one can touch BTS' international success. But if no name company tried to debut a group nowadays, they should either have millions to burn or some very famous friends

LOOΠΔTIC I saw an interview they did after vibrato saying that the label hadn't wanted to do another sexy concept after Marionette but the group had pushed it in the hope of encouraging their success. Obviously the girls were reluctant to go down this route, but it's what they felt the Korean public wanted from them
@tmsteff10186 жыл бұрын
benrgrogan that’s not what I saw, I saw that the company ceo actually wanted them to wear gstrings for their Vibrato outfits but they refused and agreed to wear the slightly less revealing underwear
@benrgrogan6 жыл бұрын
LOOΠΔTIC I haven't seen that article so can't comment on it, it may be true. The interview I saw It's clear they were against the idea and the label was reluctant but everyone felt that was the only way they stood a chance at success. They did also raise the point "that as a woman, we have a right to be sexy." [See interview below] Question: Is that why you decided to take on the shocking skin exposure? Minhee: We had to put everything on the line. We weren't in a position to think about what will come after. The success of 'Marionette' was going to determine the existence or disbandment of the team. Junyool: I prepared with the thought that this was going to be our retirement album. I watched other sunbae teams who took on the sexy concept and sharpened my knife. Gayoung: Honestly, we didn't think ourselves to be sexy. Even our agency wondered if this would suit us. But as we practiced, we realized we could be [sexy]. Question: Thanks to the success you were able to release another song. It seems like you toned down the amount of skin exposure. Minhee: Instead of sexiness, we wanted to pour our sincerity into the release ["Mask"]. Gayoung: We included in the lyrics why we had no choice but to do the sexy concept for 'Marionette'. We wanted to explain that we did it to receive love from the public. Hyoeun: But, nobody seemed interested in our sincerity. It was to the point they didn't even know we made a comeback. Those who listened to the track said it was good, but people wouldn't even give it a listen. Minhee: Because the results weren't good, our promotion cycle was short Question: I was shocked after seeing your teaser image [photo above]. Not just me, but everyone was shocked. Hyoeun: Honestly, we were shocked too. We didn't do it because we wanted to. Having experienced two failures after "Marionette", we accepted the reality and decided that we needed something that would become an issue. Junyool: We wanted to get Stellar's music out there. When we didn't have skin exposure, nobody even knew we released a new song. If it's not provocative, there is no response. Minhee: We were even asked "Why didn't you guys come out again after 'Marionette'?" when we had already made two comebacks after that song... Question: You're receiving backlash to the level of your "Marionette" promotions. Minhee: It wasn't a thong like many people were imagining. It was actually a swimsuit bottom, but because a portion of it was covered by the dress, the picture came out looking more erotic than it really was. Junyool: There's a chance that even those who insult us will listen to our song. And if our song is good, then they could become our fans. And I think that as a woman, we have a right to be sexy.
@baileystutzman60966 жыл бұрын
benrgrogan Pretty sure it was a bit of a mix of both, actually. I've seen both the articles you guys are talking about, as well as some from later that talk about how Stellar basically tried to regain a more "classy" image and get a more positive reputation little by little after Marrionette. I think more or less the sexy concept was something that was suggested by TEP and the girls agreed to it, so kinda joint culpability. (I have a suspicion Minhee pushed for it, based on some interviews I've seen about her feeling responsible, it my Korean isn't good enough to really know.) TEP suggested some things, the girls suggested some things, and it went from there. As some of the comments mention, Stellar is pretty meta in the use of their songs. The very fact that Sting references the backlash from Marrionette and Vibrato goes to show the company gave them some artistic leniency... Don't get me wrong. I realty hate TEP. Just saying I think the sexy concept was a bit of a joint effort...
@Novadestin6 жыл бұрын
As a Twinkle, I can tell you the whole "omg they were just innocent souls forced into horrible things" narrative is really old. Let me set a few things straight... 1. The girls agreed to go sexy with Marionette because they knew it was do something big to gain attention or disband, there was no middle ground. They weren't "forced into it", they agreed to it. Yes, Pascal edited the MV to be more sexy than they would have liked, but they weren't naive about what was happening. And, to be clear, no one is saying Pascal was a good company, far from it, but they weren't like some vicious overlord or something either. 2. The g-string story was bullshit, it was blown so out of proportion and twisted around. They wore swimsuit bottoms in their Vibrato photo shoot; the company asked them if they would dance in them for the MV but the girls said no because it would move around too much while dancing. The company inquired a bit more, but Stellar stood their ground and demonstrated a few moves to prove their point. The company staff got embarrassed when they could actually see what they meant and agreed to changed things up. Them talking about how they told each other "well if they don't listen to us, we'll just leave" was simply them being the big worry warts that they are over something they felt strongly about. Now, this sort of back and forth is in no way unusual between artists and their companies when working on the details of a comeback, what's important to note is that Stellar objected and the company listened to them. Again, Stellar wasn't forced into anything, they were active participants that had a say in what happened. 3. The interview that benrgrogan mentioned is FAKE!!!!! I was literally a part of the group that proved allkpop had made it up. Their "source" was a small time christian newspaper that only wrote a couple sentences about Stellar... which allkpop then translated that into a full fucking article. What they did was cobble together a couple of things Stellar had said in the past (while also sensationalizing those things as well) and then threw in a whole bunch of other bullshit to make it seem real - for those that don't know: allkpop is well known for faking stories. 4. Stellar learned how to play the game after Marionette. They told their company that Fool would fail because it was "too cute", and after it did, the company came back and basically said "OK, we'll listen to you next time..." Stellar then continued with their meta commentary that they'd started in Fool about how they and other female idols were treated/viewed by the public. They literally put themselves on display in Vibrato to say "we know this is what women have to do to get your attention". Doesn't mean they were all gung-ho about it, in fact they were very vocal about how they weren't "like that" in real life, but they knew that's what needed to be done. Sting was them saying "I'm over it, you're just a pest now" to the whole mess. (Obviously, their commentary was much more in-depth than just these general statements, but I'm trying to keep it short.) 5. Stellar started moving away from the nonsense after Vibrato because they didn't necessarily have to rely so much on the public for their success as fans pushed their makestar campaigns to be among the most successful in their history. Their last one, which I believe is still #1 on makestar, they raised almost $100k while Stellar was only asking for $8k. The girls very well could have continued as idols with the help of their fans if they'd wanted too, but right now, I think they're just tired of how the entertainment industry works and are taking a bit of a break. Gayoung is the only one that has remained relatively active in that world (as an actress). TL;DR: Stellar absolutely had a say in what was happening and the company did listen to them. Sure, the company wasn't great in any sense of the word, but the girls definitely weren't "poor innocent victims" either. It was simply a bittersweet situation and one that's not about to change without some massive societal shift/wake up call.

i miss stellar soooo much but whole heartedly agree with their decision to stop stellar because they wanted to stop being so sexy and their company wanted them to be even more sexual so they wanted to break up and the fandom kind of just supported it and wanted it to happen. Stellar aren't just making sexy videos, they make videos ABOUT making sexy videos. The barbie doll with blood, the dismembered doll, cameras and being trapped in a glass box while wearing their marionette outfits: This videos concept isn't just 'sexy', it's COMPLETELY meta. Then they go full hardcore with menstrual and vaginal imagery, at first viewing you see just sexy women but the more attention you pay the more you realize how INTENSE and incredibly critical of ITSELF this video is. Every single one of Stellars songs back to Marionette (literally: a puppet) has been about this selling of their sexuality and their relationship to the public. No band in kpop challenges the norms of the industry the way Stellar did (except maybe f(x) and amber, in the other direction). And the music was killer. They were one the greatest bands in kpop. I only wish the girls were more comfortable going even more extreme and even more meta and boundary pushing, but I guess they just wanted to make music and not get the backlash that the controversy created.

Great video! If any of the reactors are interested, all of their songs are about their journey, not just Sting! Marionette was their begrudging entry into the 'sexy' concept, overdoing it intentionally, like 'we did what you want, are you happy now?' Vibrato is their owning that concept and making it their own - they're not puppets anymore, they're in control. Hence the female symbolism. Notice also the many cameras and cramped glass boxes. Looks like you got the concept of Sting. All three of these songs have a number of articles written about them that are well worth the read and go into far more detail.

The problem is them being forced to do it, which I don't support. But I love the girls themselves.

as a huge Stellar fan this video was nice to watch, bittersweet since they disbanded but it was nice to see musicians recognizing how unique and talented they are. I'm gonna miss Stellar forever but I'm glad they're free from that industry.

Wow just learned the disband of Stellar by this video ! I'm sad cause i did enjoy the songs they made, did not mind the sexy way they went, i felt it was pretty provocative on Korean stand point, which i love provocation. But like the duo said at : 6:54 can't agree more ! It was sexy but more erotic side and for a ex student in cinema, I myself love play on double entendre in visuals, Sting was my Jam when it came out for a whole year. But knowing how the girls was treated actually show light on what i really don't appreciate in the KPOP industry and how fans should actually have more critics on that.

Regarding Stellar, I respect them a lot for doing what they did, even though it was basically selling their bodies. They were willing to go that far. Just making that decision is probably harder than anything I've ever done.
@thejackal79373 жыл бұрын
Yupp finally, someone came out with fact that they sold their body, whatver the story behind it they still used their body. Their fan really offended about it but it true

Loved the video! I’m glad y’all liked the music and understood the position Stellar was in. Mask probably isn’t the most musically interesting but it’s my favorite Stellar song and Archangels of the Sephiroth was really good too and unique in my opinion, so in the future I would suggest Archangels of the Sephiroth by them too! It was their last comeback before they disbanded and the concept was less on the “sexy” image and more powerful and strong(in my opinion) thanks!

I seriously love stellar so much, they were the only girl group I liked and I'm so upset that they felt cornered and had to turn to sexy concepts for people to actually give them attention :((

Nice reaction video..... Finally reaction video who tell how good Stellar song is without regarded how the MV look..... All Stellar song is good, i always regret why they always use Over (sorry) Sexy for their MV concept, even in YT their MV categorized as 18+ video... Because of that they got backlash from public although its not their decision what concept they gonna use for any their song.

Thank you for explaining a bit of Stellar's history, it needs to be told. Also for those that are interested on more about it and its consequences a member of the group (Gayoung) is currently on a TV show called "Miss Back" and she talked about her experience in the Kpop industry as did other women artists casted.

Here's the twist...the members were not actually on board with being exploited like this. It was the ppl making them feel like they had no choice. And the saddest part is the whole world watches it. And in the end they barely even got any compensation. So sad how greedy and gross some ppl are.

I love how Kevin 5:18 and Katie 6:07 both mention the shift from minor to major in the chorus. (Hugo and James 4:09 catch it, too.) It sounds cathartic to me, too, and somehow exhilarating and complete. That and the bridge are my two favorite parts of the song.

I was crying while watching this video, as a Twinkle (yes I am a proud twinkle) I am sure that Stellar deserved better. I hate that these days people only care about groups that can't even sing, and Stellar were the full package. Visuals, talent, good vocals, good dances, good mvs, great songs, and people didn't support them. THAT IS SO UNFAIR. STOP SUPPORTING UNTALENTED GROUPS, PEOPLE! And Blondie, let your partner speak up, he wanted to do it and you just didn't let him say a single word.
