"Where did they all go?" you ask, simple. That particular section of BoRhap was impossible to replicate live so they didn't even try. The band didn't do lip sync, so they would leave the stage whilst an audio track played, and then explode back as the rock section began.

Most of the time, I perfer Queen's stage performances over the studio versions because of the excitment and energy they bring to the song live but not with Bohemian Rhapsody. Their live version is exciting and great but because of the song's complexity, their live interaction is limited. Because of the multitude of over-dubs in the operatic section of the song, they must actually use the recorded version in the stage presentation (that's why the band leaves the stage). What it comes down to, if you haven't watched the official video of Bohemian Rhapsody you are missing the experience. (It has over 1 billion views, kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHuco4iwfrKWkLM ) The back story is, Queen was heading off on tour right after BoRap dropped in 1975 and would not be available to promote the song. It was common during the early 70s for groups to produce videos of them lip-syncing to their music to try to promote their song to the music distributors. Queen knew they had to do something different than just video tape themselves performing Bohemian Rhapsody, so instead of hiring a videographer to tape them, they hired a film director. They had some definite ideas of what they wanted to do in the video and it only took about 4 hours to film. The video was a break-thru in videos. It was so successful that it actually spawned the music video craze and the birth of MTV.

They have seen the official video, also just to clarify something this live performance has been rated the best perfomance of the song from the 80s by many people, it's excellent Freddie sings the hell out of the high notes.

Freddie's range was limited at that time, the Montreal 1981 showcased his range for this particular song better in my opinion.
