They spend a lot of time in this film showing us Steve's character - brave, determined, and self-sacrificing - which is why he was chosen for the process and why it didn't effect him the way it did Schmidt. Unlike Tony and to some extent Thor, he didn't need to learn how to be a hero, he already had the qualities needed for the job.

Yup, reactors forget something Erskine said in this movie: the serum amplifies everything inside. Steve wasn't a perfect man, but he was a good man. Selfless, thoughtful, used his brain before his brawn. That's why he's the archetype nobody could match. Walker, sadly, was a flawed but decent man suffering with PTSD, forced into being Captain America instead of receiving treatment for his trauma after war...then he got the serum. Of course he went sideways.

I remember someone criticizing this, saying it was absolutely stupid for Steve to do this. They didn't understand the idea of anyone willingly putting themselves in harms way, all so they can save others. I just looked at them and just asked, "Mind if I explain to you what a soldier does?"

@@patsyhughes7130 I googled it a few days ago after rewatching and thinking about what made him worthy. I typed in if jumping on the grenade made him worthy. It came up with it being one of the big factors that that he was a hero before he was even enhanced. It went on to say that while Thor and Iron Man had to go through trials and growth to become the heroes they became, Steve was that from the start, showing his bravery and willingness to stand up for what was right even when he was still small and weak, possibly making him more worthy than even Thor.

This selfless act of jumping on a grenade to save others was not invented for this movie. It's a real thing, that real soldiers have bravely done. This is what Tommy Lee's character was indeed testing for, this level of bravery. For just one recent, real-world example, look up U.S. Marine Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter, who did this in 2010.

@@chrispalmer9023 there are different kinds of inteligence just so you know, it is great you served your country but an IQ test doesnt show qualities like logical and strategical thinking outside the box, I dont agree with the comment above tho as first this is a film and second everyperson is different, but what the scene says is that every person that had the flag test just followed orders without trying to look for other methods and could accomplish it the way they tried, So no reason to get jumpy over a movie, unless you feel that comment threateans you which if you served it probably shouldnt, then all good.

@@EstebanBrenesV I’m not sure what point you’re trying to prove at all. The point of the part in the film is blatantly obvious, summed up work smarter not harder or think outside the box in about 15 seconds. So thanks for that obvious analysis. What they probably wanted the group to do was to work together and form some sort of pyramid or ladder system to reach the flag because it shows teamwork, camaraderie, and who steps up as a leader. It promotes when one wins, we all win. No 9-5 worker has that kind of thought process. Now the whole point of my reply was to address the comment of someone stating that whether past or present military was/is “incredibly stupid.” Arguably the most successful people that most people know of are military or veterans
@EstebanBrenesV

@@chrispalmer9023 Ok first of if it would be that obvious it would have been stated not only by other comments but even in the reactions, that it might be obvious to you or me doesnt make it obvious for everyone, which leads to the other point, coming from the only place on earth without an army, no not a single of the brilliant and inteligent people that I know are.military or veterans, while I recognize and respect the discipline it gives it is bit true that this thibgs are related with inteligence, also High IQ and self awareness of such can leaf to overconfidence and lack of external awareness, hard things to avoid and in thay regard I can speak with experience because I had to overcome that in my youth.

I have NOT served in any branch of any military. But if my civie brain had to guess, the flag was actually supposed to teach teamwork! A whole gaggle of guys clambering over eachother aren't going to get anywhere. The ine furthest up is getting pulled down by his squadmates as they try to gain purchase, and get ahead. The only way to get it down (barring Rogers' method) is to work together. And while one man might get the glory (or ride back to camp), the mission would be a success. But that's just my interpretation.
