On one hand i like that we took a dark part of our history and flipped it into something positive. Idk im kinda conflicted tbh.

Growing up white in MA, I’ve mostly heard blacks referred to as “The brothas”, referring to working class fellowship. But I’ve heard that word used in hateful ways, like we were smoking a blunt and one dude we were with said, “Hey, Reggie, don’t you lip it”, indirectly calling him the N word. As a white dude with biracial family members, I hate the word, but only when white people use it

The one thing a lot of people missed was the actual pronunciation of the way "Carter" was saying the word is different from the way it's typed on screen for the subtitles. He pronounces it ending with an, -a, and not an, -er. So when the Carter character instructs the Lee character to, "Say what I say and do what I do", right before entering the bar, Lee was just following Carter's instructions. If you're still offended, I'm sorry but this is how "chill" they were back in the late 90's to early 2000's; if you wanna blame someone, blame the one/s who did the subtitles. Also, let's not forget how "racial" the Carter character was towards the Lee character in their first meeting, yet both characters as well as the actors that portray them, become the closest of friends despite being from two different backgrounds and cultures.

The joke and bit are funny until you learn that Bret Ratner, the director of the, film purposefully mislead Jackie Chan while directing the scene as Jackie was not familiar with the English lines. Jackie later went back to ask Ratner what it was that he was saying that elicited such a strong response from the bar men so as to make them want to fight. Upon the revelation that the word was such an oppressive word Jackie became disgusted and enraged warning that he never be misled into saying such filthy things like that ever again. I worry that the director didn't end up doing the same thing for the scenes in RH2 where Lee is telling Carter about what "Dirty movies" he likes to watch.
