1:37 125~ damage vs 75~ damage. I mean you kind of just showed how Defense can make a significant difference. Being able to survive a hit or two against bosses that hit hard is bigger than you make it out to be. Max Health and Defense define the amount of mistakes you can get away with while fighting bosses, and naturally, the more mistakes you're allowed to make, the easier it is to win. Being able to survive for longer also means more health regeneration & health potions. I don't know how to word it but, the more survivability you already have from defense, the even longer you will survive in the long run thanks to health regen & being able to drink more health potions. You even said it was especially viable against random mobs, which is half of the game. Hell, from my experience, going full tank/warding on Melee is easier than being glass cannon on any other class depending on the boss, because health regen + potions render you almost unkillable as long as you don't get hit too many times in a short amount of time. That applies to some Calamity bosses on Revengeance mode too, even. They say you don't need defense if you can just not get hit, but likewise, you don't need to put as much effort into beating the game if defense can keep you alive for much, MUCH longer depending on the setup and boss.

I will admit that my train of thought was sort of all over the place in the video. I got the idea for the video when a friend thought that replacing wings with a shackle was a good idea. Basically, don’t fall into the trap of increasing defense at the cost of other stats. I will say that I didn’t really convey that idea too well in it though. I also know that increasing defense and stuff lets you make more mistakes (which I tend to make a lot), but I was more looking through the lens of expert or master mode where you’ll pretty much die in a few hits anyway. I regret at least not bringing up regeneration, but that’s a whole different and confusing topic. I do thank you for coming up with actual criticism though instead of saying something along the lines of “just dodge lol.”

@@aggressivebungee He has a good point. You even showed that the summoner died to 4 hits from fishron, while the warrior died to the 6th. The warrior survived an entire 50% longer! That's 50% more time to deal 50% more damage before dying.

I find stacking defensive stats an amazing strategy on melee characters, defense being one of them. By raising your defense as high as possible with a combination of warrior armor, a couple of defense accessories, and "warding" prefixes you can easily get it so high up that it will pick up some slack for your damage resistance and, eventually, health regen. It is the most mathematically efficient way to play warrior as well, because what other build can kill the hardest boss, on the hardest difficulty, without post-progression gear and any exploits, by standing still and clicking your mouse? Not only that, in 1.4 this playstyle received probably the most buffs: it now adds attack speed to your knuckles and defense to your turtle shell; meanwhile new ways of stacking accessories on other classes barely changed their outputs (the only valuable change I can think of right now is double scope, and even that requires you to give up one of accessories you would previously use instead). All and all, despite all the passiveness of defense stat (you can get away with only using what comes with your armor that you use for all the damage bonuses), building your strategy around maximizing your defense is not just viable, but sometimes even preferable option.

Normally in boss fights, you don't kill them before their attack patterns go off even with a full damage build, and on the contrary, defense is very helpful for covering up for your mistakes when you are inevitably faced with their patterns, so no defense is not overrated in my opinion.

I think melee is great for higher difficulties when playing with other people, since in hardmode you can keep bosses on the person with the high defense, and if that person is good with boss patterns, it makes for a great co-op combo. Otherwise in master worthy if you’re by yourself you might as well run summoner and live the glass cannon life :>

No, it really isn't. In master mode deffense is the strongest! Since it scales better. I'd argue that deffence is the most effective in master mode. I played it trough with all melee high deffence armors and guns as weapons of choice. It was surprisingly effective and fun! You get the defence of melee and the damage from ranged! I tried to get ranged armors for the buffs, but it's just not worth it! Building the highest deffence armors grants visible survivability. And post Golem just go with Valhalla armor and (asside from the martian madness) it's smooth sailing till moonlord. Any class you want to play, just go Valhalla armor and it single handedly carries you until the lunar armors!

@@simas2883 In master mode all debuffs last like 33% longer than in Expret and All armor is 33% more effective (yours as well as the enemies'), so it adds more than just attack and deffence to the enemies. If you really want to see something miserable, play 2.95 Expert. It has almost double the health pools from Expert mode (aka way more than in master), nearly the same damage as master mode and your armor is *less* effective... If you also add the 'for the worthy' seed basically all enemy damage and health will be doubled! Ever wondered how it feels to fight against a 12000 hp Eye of Ctuhlu? Or may be trying to kill a 150k hp Skeletron Prime with 260 lazer damage? Also, did I mention that lategame green slimes have 1200 hp and deal 200 damage? Yeah, Master mode is child's play compared to that!

Me: Remembers my character who min-maxed defense, making pretty much every boss in Master mode an absolute joke, taking dozens of hits to kill, even for Moon Lord. I don't think defense is overrated, it's kind of OP if you build for it. Edit: A late edit, but specifically, my character had a defense of 147 (before consumable buffs and other defense increasing objects, like the cat statue), whilst also having upwards of 74% damage reduction (29% inherently, 49% when Solar Armor's shield is up, and an additional 25% increase when below half HP). So yeah, hard to kill build, especially when you acknowledge health regeneration and potions. Hell, most of Master Mode Moonlord's attacks did under 10 damage to me per attack. So yeah, Defense build is busted when focused on.

Should mention that in multiplayer things are quite different. With stacking Defense and DR from the turtle/beetle set, Hero's Shield, Frozen Shield, worm scarf, etc., and having another player with the spectre set healing you while you draw monster aggression can make you nearly invincible against most bosses. Even if it would only allow you to survive 1 extra hit on your own against a boss, the added healing means that you would be able to take 8-10 more hits as the reduced damage helps the healing outpace the boss's damage.

There is ONE more way to increase your survivability, and that’s through mobility. I may sound like an elitist here but it’s far more practical to not get hit entirely than to TRY to survive something. We all mess up every now and again but with proper mobility, dodging attacks is a breeze, and with decent regeneration allows you to regenerate the damage taken from an attack before you get hit by the next, drastically increasing how long you can stay alive.

It's kind of funny that you mentioned the offense strategy, considering I have two strats in Terraria I equip my items that increase my minions and then equip damage boosting items. Or alternatively I just go full DPS with an entire loadout based on boosting my melee damage. So whippy summoner boi or stabby boi. Edit: if you want to go for this strategy if I remember correctly the modifier you want for your accessories is menacing

Early game that's very good but it falls off FAST because you end up with sufficient defence stat without doing that, so you give up damage for no reason.

The main reason I still like having a decent amount of defense is that a lot of mid range attacks will deal only like 1 damage instead of like 20-30, which does make a big difference. But yeah the heavier an attack is the less it matters. Still bosses can get a lot more chip damage on you with their weaker attacks if your defense isn't on point

I like adding modifiers to items for builds that lack in that area. For instance, on my summoner character, everything is reforged to warding, as summoners lack defense, and on my ranger build, everything is reforged to quick, as rangers lack movement speed.

I wish games would understand how great both damage reduction and damage resistance is Fallout games usually use damage resistance (Save for New Vegas, which mostly uses damage reduction) But having one game with both types of damage negating armor would be great Reduction would be good at completely stopping weak attacks (even if they come at an incredibly fast rate) And resistance would be good at weakening the heavier blows Though combining both in hearty amounts would probably be overpowered, so i think if there was some armor set that combined them, it should be relatively weaker Or you could just max out your health regen and laugh as bosses fail to finish you off I've done it, the amount of HP regen you can get is a little overpowered especially when combined with resistance and reduction

Totally agree with you. WHen you start to get to Master mode, defense can go out the window. So many things can kill you in a hit or two anyway, just focus on mobility and offense.

This is why, in my opinion, post plantera is when melee shines, maybe even before if you cheese Plantera. Then you get the Vampire knifes which complements DR and defence amazingly. Then you get bettle armor shell, which is literally perfect for defence, and congrats you now have practically everything available to you for phase tanking Moonlord.

Outside of master mode, defense is still frankly useless. Damage and mobility are far, far superior options.

there also is one unmentioned and often underused type of "DR", regeneration. using Squires Great Helm Valhalla knight's breastplate and band of regen, charm of myths, shiny stone, celestial stone, etc. is basically like defense, but its strengths and weaknesses are multiplied, MUCH better with chip damage, but worse with hard hits.

Just like with all Terraria stats, defense is purely situational. If you're fighting bosses, it's best to focus on ways to avoid damage altogether. If you're exploring though, well, there are simply too many factors that damage avoidance becomes unreliable. But, still good to know what works and what doesn't.

Exactly, defense (stat) can be handy, but special defense mechanics, such as dodges (Black Belt, Brain of Confusion, Hallowed Armor), blocking amounts of damage relative to the total (Worm Scarf, Frozen Turtle Shell, Turtle Armor, Solar Flare Armor), invincibily time increasing items (Cross Necklace) and even healing strats (Vampire Knives, Spectre Hood) all play a much more important role in surviving than the defense stat.

My way of playing consists in a mix of better attack and RUNNING AWAY Equipment consists of : - Weapons that allow to attack from far away without having to target too much, 'cause when you're dodging-running everywhere and are focusing on where you'll land next, trying to be snipping isn't the best solution (weapons with auto-aim, wide range or easy-to-master placement include : demon scythe, bee gun, magnet sphere, daedalus stormbow, most magic endgame weapons, auto-aiming ammos, etc) - Armor that states up your weapon's damages - Obsidian/ankh shield because knockback can make your escape harder - An equipment that allows dashing (shied of cthulhu, tabi, master ninja gear), very good to avoid hits at the last moment as well as outrun attacks and ennemies that are normally faster than you (grappling hooks also help with that) - Regenerations items, because you won't be able to dodge forever, you'll inevitably have moments of inattention, but if you manage not to have too many of them it will allow you to keep an acceptable health level - Wings with a high vertical speed (horizontal speed will be compensated by the ability to dash), also a good mastering of your grappling hook will allow you to recharge them without having to land on the ground - Modifications that increase critical hit chances, more effective against ennemis with a high defense than just more damage Optional : - Rod of discord, can help avoid big and slow attacks like death rays (don't use it too often or you'll take more damages than if you had just stayed still to take the attack directly) PS : also whatever your class is, minions and sentries will always help

I'd say DR is the general term for reducing damage, so defense, percentage, and dodge chance are subcategories of DR. and just like band of regeneration & charm of myths, you can raise dodge chance by equipping both master ninja gear and the black belt, I think.

tldr: Use high armor for mobbing, damage reduction or damage buffing for bossing. What isn't mentioned: most enemies are designed to have dodgable attacks (screw you frost moon), so + move speed on all gear can actually be substantial for boss fights (+move speed when fighting moon lord makes dodging certain attacks trivial). You still want to armor up for mobbing though, their overlapping attack patterns don't lend towards consistent dodging, particularly underground. P.S. Or you can just use life steal and not care anymore.

I did mastermode HC for my first ever Terraria playthrough with maximum possible defense and DR. Most stuff in the game would hit for 1-20 damage, which is absolutely massive. The key is consistency of damage rather than spiking. For example, if Fishron is hitting you for 120 3 times in 3 seconds, it's hard to pause and quit or recall react to that. If he's hitting for 60 you are seeing your health drop steadily and can either fix what you're doing wrong, (like wrong rhythm which happens all the time) or have time to log out/recall. Someone else mentioned more survivability is more healing potions as well already. But here's the bottom line: if you have 10 defense and an enemy hits for 100 you take 90 damage, or a 10% reduction. If you have 90 defense, it's 90%, right? So let's say you have 91 defense. That's a full 10% improvement over 90 defense (9 damage instead of 10 taken). The more defense you have, the more effective it is. Evasion/dodging is out of the question because of the random nature. You will eventually get unlucky and character dead, refarm gear or new world. DR also calculates after defense as well and you can have up to 74% or so I believe. If you would have taken 50 damage you'll take 13 instead. With high defense it's easy to make all but the biggest boss hits in the game tolerable (martian boss beam, destroyer head, etc)

Another alternative: Gotta go fast. (Yes I know lots of people have said it.) To quote the Terraria Wiki, The maximum running speed the player can achieve is 235 mph on an Asphalt Block, done by wearing the Orichalcum Helmet, Gi, and Valhalla Knight's Greaves alongside the following set of Accessories with the Quick Modifier on Master Mode: Terraspark Boots, Frostspark Boots, Lightning Boots, Anklet of the Wind, Aglet, Soaring Insignia, and Moon Charm (or any of its upgrades). It must be nighttime to activate the Moon Charm's Werewolf buff, and the player must additionally be under the effects of Happy!, Exquisitely Stuffed, Swiftness, and Panic!. These effects are granted by a nearby Sunflower, certain food items, Swiftness Potion, and the Panic Necklace (or its upgrades), respectively. The Panic Necklace must be unequipped for one of the other accessories after the buff is applied. This represents a 1553.33% movement speed and is far beyond any other attainable movement speed, beating even the terminal falling velocity from a Portal Gun (which is 179 mph).

i love how melee is just called warrior because almost none of its hardmode weapons are used for true melee, and somehow, a thrown spear is also a melee (close combat) weapon

Here is my answer to the video's question: Ideally, DMG boosting armor and accessories are the best. That is when your dodging ablities in Terraria are god-like. The question is, how many attacks in an event, cave, dungeon, boss fight can you dodge? You can increase your dodge or not-to-get-hit chance by changing the evnoiurnment to your advantage - thus boss arenas. But in every other scenario where you can't abuse your wings, you are going to get hit. It may be true that melee will last 1 or 2 more attacks than summoner. But we are talking about DMG boosting set here, so even if you are that melee guy, switching from 200+ armor set (for example) to 120 armor with buffs for dmg, WILL make you able to take less hits. That's not even 1 or 2 less, but 3+. The best option for DMG sets would be to use on bosses, but ONLY those that you know well - you know their attack and fight pattern, your arena is suited for that, you know how you are going to fight/dodge stuff. Also, there is an option were you can overpower enemies with your sheer DMG alone, then just try to get your hands on a weapon that can go through walls (late game, lul) and don't care about anything that I said here, because you don't need to care about things, that don't exist. ;p In every other scenario, a much better option would be a compromise between DMG and armor in a set. Just make it up to your liking and you will be good to go. If you are taking more hits, than the god-like dodger, then just itemize for it - thus more armor. Just because you are taking more hits, doesn't mean you can't be smart about it. You can also try to improve your dodging skills and lean for more damage or stay as you are. Whatever suits you at that moment. Damage reduction items such as those in the video have more priority in your itemization process, because they ARE simply better than normal armor against high damage attacks. You can't make a set that would only involve those, because they are just too few. You can however put them in your set instead of armor bonuses and that's also why we put them there. Dodge chance may be an option, but again, you can't make an entire set out of that. You can put it in there and they may also have higher priority, than normal armor. The problem is, what if they are going to proc on an attack that would cause you 5 dmg and not proc on attack that would deal 300? Also, I bet not many of you would like to go out of your way to grind for that master ninja accessory. That's why it's included in some builds, but if I remember correctly, they are optional there. If you like dodge items, then that's cool, suit yourself. I've never said they are not available. Calamity players like to use Counter Scarf on Revengence mode, because it CONSTANTLY allows you to dodge attacks for YOUR CHOICE. It requires a bit of skill, but hey, it's really good otherwise and it's an example of a really, damn good dodge item. The best tactic would be to not take damage at all, that's why killing King Slime using rope and some throwing items was really easy (it got patched, because that's cheesing, lul). If it comes to choosing between "Menacing" and "Warding" enhancement, my answer is to choose whatever suits you better. Personally I don't like "Menacing", because I find myself getting hit from time to time and that ability to take 1 or 2 more hits is a great option for me, because I find myself survive more often on bosses having warding enchancement, than menacing one. But hey, you do you, I consider myself 7/10 when it comes to dodging, but still find usage of menacing hard to implement. So answering the video's question - defense may or may not be overrated, but it isn't the sole core of our sets in Terraria and it isn't the best when it comes to preventing damange in overall, but is the most common and pretty efficient way of doing so. TD;DR - inconsistent dodge chance < armor < damage redution < not getting hit in the first place, but armor is the most common, easiest and quite efficient way of surviving and progressing.

Defense is extremely useful in Classic Mode because it is additive which allows you to ignore attacks that do little damage and are hard to avoid. In higher difficulties, having high defense no longer negates weaker attacks, so it is better to increase offense stats to reduce the time spent in battle and increase movement speed to make dodging more consistent. Life regeneration can increase survival greatly. I find the Valhallah Knight chestplate and Squire helmet combination even better than the lunar armors as it provides extremely high regeneration in addition to the sentry summon boosts. Mechanisms such as minecarts, teleporters, and statues can be used to your advantage.
