Forgive me for recycling a reply, but… One thing that always bothered me about Read My Lips is the ending at Arkham. No matter how “totally submerged” the Scarface personality seemed to be, why did they allow Wesker near anything even *RESEMBLING* a dummy? Give the guy an easel and some paint brushes for Chrissake! Not that it was a bad episode. Far from it! I just couldn’t suspend my disbelief enough to ignore Arkham’s negligence.

Making the Ventriloquist a good ventriloquist was definitely the right decision. It made Scarface way creepier and almost alive at times. Plus the way Batman used his ventriloquism skill to beat him wouldn't have worked nearly as well if the Ventriloquist was bad.

I always love the mystery of just how much is Wesker's performance, and how much is Scarface himself being alive. In the comics, they explain that the original Scarface puppet got carved out of a tree in Arkham Asylum used for hanging inmates, and maybe Scarface is possessed by the ghost of a dead gangster.

@@Lesley_RedRhody Well, it's Arkham Asylum. The place is famous for being more like a hotel and less like a prison for these inmates. Remember that Scarecrow, Harley Quinn and Lock-Up all used to work there. You could make the case that Arkham is cursed. very possible, considering its origin. Maybe part of the curse is that the staff overtime becomes more deranged or careless, kinda like how Pennywise's presence in IT turned all the adults in Derry into neglectful parents and child abusers.

I think the reason is that aside from being a puppet of an old style mobster, he has no real gimmick or superpower. Scarecrow can make you hallucinate your greatest fear, Mad Hatter can put you under mind controll, Joker is unpredictable and uses deadly weapons looking like party gag items, Poison Ivy uses weird and deadly plants, Penguin makes use of birds and secret weapons in his umbrella. But the Ventrilloquist and Scarface, well, they run their crimes like a classic mobster and don't really have any superpowers to make them more dangerous than Falcone or Thorne.

@@wjzav1971 IDK, Two Face falls into that exact category. Actually I think the real reasons we rarely see The Ventriloquist is both the presence of Two Face (since Two Face has a very similar presence what with being of two minds about things and heavy gangster themes) and... well a puppet is pretty silly. Not a lot of authors want to use him. But as an occasional menace he works great.

Some of those guys can be pretty damn good, especially with good camera work. Jeff Dunham is actually the only ventriloquist I know of, but he does make it seem like he's talking to little wooden people. He's good. I love this episode, and Scarface is a great character concept. In the following Batman cartoon, "The Batman," Scarface's appearance would result in him making a giant Scarface mech that would hold the ventriloquist as if HE were a dummy, which is nice for the symbolism of one personality becoming dominant over the other but also feels way over the top. Then again subtlety wasn't exactly the strong suit of that cartoon...

I always loved when this series tackled a villain that was the victim of their own insanity. The thing about the ending that I like is that it makes you think...If the medication suppressed his "alternate personality," then which one is the real one? Is Wesker really deciding to carve a new Scarface? Or is Scarface the one in control, creating a new body for himself? Or is it some mixture of the two, trying to separate themselves again? Really a great character, another great example of how this series remade some of the lamer Batman villains into something truly fascinating.

"Alright, Yous mugs!" Scarface's whole schtick, (complete with a cute lil' tommy gun), really fits this "gangster era" of Batman more than any other version, which might be why it's been so hard to update him for modern times. Ventriloquism itself seems more like an old-timey form of entertainment, than something popular today. Anyway, I love this episode, and particularly love how the multiple personality thing had Batman shook. (He even startles a bit in one scene when the doll opens its eyes). Arnold Wesker is one of the great villain character studies because of the question of who is the real personality. As for the callback to Zatara, it was nice, but still a little random, since we never, ever see Batman use this voice-throwing ability again, lol. What I've noticed that I didn't before in these BTAS in these rewatches, is actually how often the henchmen are their own characters, too. From the freckled twins Two-Face hired, to Joker's gang, they always tend to feel distinct, and sometimes even get great one-liners of their own. I love Rhino"s tender "Thanks, Boss" after being told he was too dumb to be the traitor.

Hear me out: A Batman movie featuring the Ventriloquist and Mr. Scarface. It's the first time Batman has to really deal with a villain who's psychologically unwell, and deals with the morality of judging someone like Arnold Wesker. Dr. Hugo Strange can make an appearance to give slightly unethical advice, and just for the hell of it, bring in Dr. Harleen Quinzel! Oh, and Arnold Wesker is probably played by Jeff Dunham. Because it's going to be a dark comedy, get someone you just KNOW is busting to tell some horrible jokes! Actually, there's an interesting idea: A Fanscription episode which goes over how you'd portray each Batman villain, starring in their own movie. We don't need deep-dives on every concept, just say, "Mr. Freeze was done best this way, I think it could translate to film this way!" amd "The Joker has been done to death already, buuuuut if we had OUR way, he'd look like this!"

The Ventriloquist and Scarface. Such an odd concept made such a great episode. And we'd see Scarface again in the episode "Lockup". Oddly, the only anime I know TMS Entertainment produced are the different iterations of Lupin III.

Do we need more Capone, prohibition and noir gangsters with an artstyle that reminds you of the oldies with Bogart and Cagney (and maybe some Hitchcock too?). Yes we do! A critique you could make against the show is that it spends very little time fighting organized crime and the mob - usually something common where you have a character like Batman who want to clean up Gotham from corruption. But for some reason Falcone and Maroni were removed and replaced with a boring stand-in - Thorne. Was the topic of the mob too sensitive for DC back then? But finally we are doing it hardboiled! We are getting some well-planned and brutally-orchestrated heists that will shock the broads and give us the femme fatales with short red dresses...or would do, if it wasn´t a kids show. You get an early prizefighting scene (and some Jazzy music straight from the 20s) setting up this old-school feeling, but because Batmans villains has to be mental (with some exceptions) in some ways, we find out that Wesker is innocent and the doll is completely in charge due to an identity disorder. What a great idea! (And since its a wooden doll, we can see it being shot to bits, mob style - take THAT, censorship! AND be rebuilt for future appearences). My favourite scene is when Batman manipulates Scarface that Wesker is the member of his gang that has been selling them out. You very clearly see the doll and the human as separate individuals (if you doubted before) and there is no doubt in my mind that Scarface would have shot Wesker if Batman hadn´t intervened. He is very much a separate entity. Scarface is a bit of a cliche tbh, but he is supposed to be and the way he speaks and acts is believeable for someone like Wesker who probably saw the same Grey Ghost movies like Bruce, but associated more with the villains (I also love the Justice League episode where the Justice Lords have lobotomized all villains in Arkham - with the doll lobotomized and Wesker completely unharmed! That is a great scene). In addition, you sort of question how this random gang of Mooks (including Rhino that somehow is so hard to identify despite being something like 250 cm. Yeah, that intro scene with Gordons video tape is pretty dumb and the "detective work" in this episode is quite weak) all look so stereotypical mobmembery, with Ratsy taking the cake. Its honestly both bad and hillarious at the same time and that is a criticism...sort of. The episode doesn´t really take itself that seriously. But its hard to complain if you are a sucker (as I am) for some noir cheese. What more. Music and artstyle is good as usual. Maybe we need some more trenchcoats and unfiltered cigarettes. But Scarface makes a bigger impression after one episode than Thorne did for an entire season. In addition, I think I would have prefered some more set-up, some historical explanation to Weskers issues (or even better - couldn´t we have seen a longer intro where Scarface´s gang actually completes the robbery instead of that video tape scene), but I can live that he is just a great ventriloquist (I think the studio make the right call changing that part in the comics too) with heavy mental issues. This is close to a 5/5, but I think its small flaws hold it back a little. Verdict: 4 out of 5 bats

Man, Scarface is one of the most underrated Batman villains. Other than cartoons and a few video games he hasn't been in much. I remember him from the last season of Gotham which was kind of rushed since he died minutes after he appeared onscreen.

I’ll say it again, the Ventriloquist and Scarface are the most underrated Batman rouge. George Dzundza gives one of the best vocal performances in the show, which is saying a lot. I like to think I can do a good Ventriloquist/Scarface voice even if my Scarface kind of sounds like Danny Devito in the video I made.

A fantastic episode that makes you feel sorry for the villain. You can tell that the Ventriloquist is a character that is troubled and terrified by Scarface. The voice of Scarface, further adds to the idea of a gangster of the 1920s. It's one of my favorites too. :)

Scarface is such an underrated villain. He can bring in the old-school gangster element of Gotham, which I always love. He is also a tragic figure, and often legitimately threatening. But all this with that edge of goofiness that makes a villain so memorable. Batman stories should use him more often.

Thank God for btas. I admit I was confused as heck when I read a batman comic with scarface in it and he called batman "gatman". This is an episode that shows why this show excels. It is a fun streamlined version of a otherwise boring villain. Love this episode

Honestly, it's funny it's never explained how Wesker came into contact with Scarface in this show or the following one considering the comics mentioned the latter was built from a cursed tree at Blackgate where inmates would occasionally be hung and originally belonged to a hardened criminal before he manipulated the former into murdering him. He's like a sentient One Ring of sorts. There's even a bit on The Batman which revealed Scareface was once part of Wesker's standup acts that ended up being cancelled. Honestly, it was for the best. Obscuring their origin helped create an unpredictable aura around them.

To me, the best depiction of the Ventriloquist/Mr Scarface is in The Batman. The guy has a couple dedicated episodes and, man, does he steal the show ! Also, the doll might just be actually alive, as in a comic, a sorceress comments that there was SO much evil projected into it, it pretty much corrupts whoever holds it...

The comics had a second Ventriloquist take ownership of the Scarface dummy... or rather it took ownership of *her*, so much that she got a wooden replacement eye. Very creepy.
