Reader Response Theory / Transaction Theory

This video talks about the role of the reader in constructing textual meaning. According to this theory, meaning is constructed through a transaction between the reader and the text within a particular context1. The theory rejects the structuralist view that meaning resides solely in the text. Reader-response criticism argues that a text has no meaning before readers experience it. The reader-response critic's job is to examine the scope and variety of reader reactions and analyze the ways in which different readers make meaning out of both personal reactions and inherited or culturally conditioned ways of reading.
