Love the blank pages you leave in your gluebooks. It is a gift of time. I've always felt that need to finish...a page, a 2 page layout, etc. The only creation I've felt comfortable leaving for a time is junk journals. I find when I come back to it; I have fresh ideas. I'll have to give myself that grace on collages so they can improve

Exactly! You're giving yourself space to come back -- or not. But I love having the option to go either way. Most of the time I return, and then add something from a "fresh idea", as you said. 👏🏼💜

I like ring binders as long as the sheets are very sturdy and don’t bend much.

I wish you would do a tutorial on this wonderful idea of using the Readers Digest Cover. Curious on how you finished the edge of the cover and punched the holes. The collage work is beautiful. I just found your channel and have watched video after video. Love your work! 7:27

I just discovered your channel. Love your stuff and style. I have gobs of family ephemera and have been hoarding it not knowing what to do with it. This would be great! Thanks for the idea. I look forward to finding time to watch all of your videos! So many projects, so little time!

I really enjoyed this flip through. You have a great eye for color and balance. This video also gave me an inspiration for a little book I made using a Tim Holtz ring binder and a package of recipe card dividers I picked up at a thrift shop. I was pleased with the book but had no clue as to what to do with all those blank little pages... now I do. Thank you.

I really like the ring binder! The stiff pages, tabs, and ease of turning pages seems really appealing to me. Gives some structure to the variety of images--making it seem more significant as art. I think I may make one for gathering letters, envelopes, and cards sent to me. tfs

This is wonderful Margarete! Not only are your pretty collage pages very inspiring, but you've solved a dilemma for me. I have picked up a number of Readers Digest books intending to alter them in tact but found some were so old, the brittle spine would not stay attached to the covers. This is a great way to us the pretty front & back. Thanks so much for the flip and the share! :-)

What a gorgeous book Margarete. I have so many books that I'd like to alter and just yesterday I was wondering what I was going to do with the books that I'm only keen on the covers and not the innards, and this is an awesome idea, I love it. It's like the 'art' journal you have when you don't have an art journal. XxxMelody

Hey Margarete!! I'm back again. I really like this journal. It feels complete. I think I might try some rings too. I have them in my stash and I like the idea of moving them around. I agree that it takes time to warm up to them because they don't seem so sophisticated as a bound book. But, things lie nice and flat and you can move things around. Too many optinos and too little time. Hugs and thanks again! Juliana

Yep, rings take some warming up to, but now it's all good ;-) I've been setting aside a set of mid-20th century bits and pieces to make another one of these types of journals. They're pretty fun. I agree too many options and too little time, but for me it's ok to have 6 projects going on at one time. Sure, some take a few years to complete, but that's ok.

LOL!! Well, if you want to feel better, my last photo book project took me ten years to finish. I worked on it from 2002-2012 and it was shot all in one neighbourhood in NYC. Sometimes things just take time. It's called a long term project and completely fine. Take care!!

@MargareteMiller
@MargareteMiller 7 жыл бұрын
Awesome, Marci! If you can't find the rings right away, you can still start with the individual pages and think about the binding later. I've also seen people use twine or another heavy yarn. I'm sure there are other options. Let me know if you discover something better. I'm not a really big fan of the bulky rings.

I really enjoyed this flip through Margarete. I have a lot of old postage stamps and old letters and I am considering what to do with them. I wanted to know if you work on these journals over a period of time or if you do it in a shorter period of time. I can't wait to see more. TFS!!

Hi Juliana, I'm glad you enjoyed it! As far as how long it takes me to complete these kinds of journals, I'll say consider these journals to be long-term projects. Maybe you even noticed that I've left some pages blank. That means I can go back to it and add more later. This one I started at the end of January so it took me about 2.5 months. I usually have 2 or 3 projects going at the same time because I get bored of things after a while. I love looking through older journals I've made and adding more or even changing things, sometimes. I'm debating doing a demonstration video on how I assemble a collage like the ones here. Would that be something you might find helpful or interesting?

I enjoyed seeing your book and I like the idea of the rings for the same reason of being able to move pages around. I use the Canson Mixed Media books for the same reason, as they are spiral bound and come apart easily. I have yet to try using a book. May I ask abut the bases of you ur pages. Are they file folders cut down? Some of them had a shine to them so I am curious. Thanks for sharing!
@MargareteMiller

Yes, these are file folders cut down. I love the stiffness of the thick paper. It works well in ring journals.

What a great journal. Love how you've arranged everything on the pages. I have a few questions if you don't mind answering: Is the cover paper or material? What is the black tape? What kind of glue/tape did you use? I can't find any that doesn't wrinkle the pages, especially magazine pictures. I've been wanting to make a journal and I love your ideas and comments.
@MargareteMiller
@MargareteMiller 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Retha, I'm glad you like it! :-) The cover is paper. The black tape is also a paper but has a plastic coating on it, I think. It was part of the spine. Did you see in the video where I showed the second book cover I had but hadn't cut it up yet? You'll see what I mean. For the glue/tape question, I use double sided tape, mostly, and then sometimes I use a glue stick. I HATE when I ruin a collage by using wet glue and then the paper doesn't dry flat. I use the double sided tape for heavier pieces of paper and glue stick for thin ones. I've gotten a lot of questions on this journal so I think I'm going to record a follow up video answering questions, and then doing a demo of how I put a collage together. I think that might be helpful to people just starting out.

The rings measure very close to 3.5cm, about 1-3/8 inch. It's possible to put larger rings in, and I might if I'm going to add more pages. It's starting to not close properly.
