i did something v similar on my own - i calculated roughly how many pages all of the books on my tbr totalled and then i calculated how many pages i would have to read everyday to eliminate my tbr in a year. it ended up working out to 173 pages per day. what ended up happening is that i felt myself enjoying books less because i would just read through them to get to that page goal instead of reading for only enjoyment and i only ended up lasting about 3 weeks because it just was not working for me at all! it was definitely an interesting experiment for sure

It was so interesting to see how other people feel about structuring their reading. I aim to read for at least 10 minutes every day then if I feel like continuing then I will and if I don't then I stop until the next day. This is to prevent me from leaving weeks between each book as I'm such a mood reader, It helps me to keep the momentum going!

I started scheduling my reading in January of this year because I wanted to make sure that I make time to read every single day. I pick a book I want to read that week, divide the number of pages by 7 and that's the amount of pages I want to read every day. I usually stop when I've read the page count for that day, but if I still want to read, I'll continue. It's been a pretty good motivator to know that if I read this amount of pages every day for a week, I will be finished with a book by Sunday. And I know 1 book a week isn't much for most people, but to me it's a huge deal. I really liked this challenge. And I can totally relate with not being in a reading mood and feeling like I have to catch up with my reading if I didn't hit my page count for a day.
@enlosmargenes4 жыл бұрын
Laura i think a book a week is a pretty generous amount, definitely puts you in the average reader category

@crisblakeney6 жыл бұрын
This video is a treat! I might have to come back and edit this over and over again as the video continues...but with that said this video is so intriguing. The reason this is the case is because I actually divide my books I read each month into sections. I got this idea from another BookTuber where they placed tabs at certain points in the book and that’s where they must read to for that day. I never used to do this. I was a lot like you in the sense that I would just read when I felt like it. My pages read per day varied just like yours. The reason I decided to divide my books into sections is because I’m depressed. Depression is different for everyone, but for me it takes all my focus, where all I’m thinking about on a day to day basis is what I’m actually depressed about. This made reading very difficult for me. I’d go months without reading, not because I was in a reading slump, but because I couldn’t focus on what I was reading. My therapist told me a technique that helps with depression is to find something that can distract away from it: exercise, traveling, something you love, anything. Well my first love is reading, and it wasn’t enough. That’s what began the dividing my books into sections. The thought was that I could read a certain amount of pages per day (which still varied depending on the book length, etc.), and whether or not I finished that days section, I was still doing what I love which is reading, and I was distracting my mind away from the depression. It’s only been a few months since I’ve started this system and it’s working well for me. I’m reading more than I ever have. I’m not reading a certain amount of pages a day like you are, but I still have the sections in place and I read to my hearts content. I’m so excited to see how this challenge goes for you, and what you learn from it!!!

@@Yokie05 Fair enough. I do watch KZbin at 1.25 x but the books I choose to listen to as an audiobook rather than physically reading are usually ones with a lot of atmosphere and beautiful writing, so I like to listen to them at the original speed so that I can be fully immersed in the performance.

I agree with you! It's so much easier to get back into a book when you stop in the middle of the chapter or in the middle of the scene. I always read at school and this always happens to me because i have to stop reading at weird places. When I pick up the book again I easily get into it because I want to know what happens in that specific scene. But it's also annoying because you have to put the book down at an interesting part, and when you pick it up again if it's an emotional scene or something, it doesn't affect you as much because you feel a little disconnected and doesn't have the same effect.
@TheHannieCorner6 жыл бұрын
Your projects are always so creative! I'm super jealous. I try to read 50 pages every night before I go to bed, and I'd say I'm successful about 80% of the time. back when i watched this video the first time it made me want to try this for myself, so for a whole month i read at least 100 p per day (though i didn't set an upper limit), and it made me enjoy reading so much more! it meant i read my allotted 100 p relatively early in the day (from like 3-5 pm) and had the rest of the evening to do whatever i wanted without having "i need to read" looming over me. and then i found that I actually wanted to read even more during that time, so I routinely read 200+ pages per day and, within 30 days, only missed 1 day of reading bc i was at a family get-together. the only "negative" i noticed was that I used to read one short story after each book to get through short story collections, and with my challenge I quickly stopped doing that because I felt like I wasn't making any progress when I'd 'waste' 50-90 pages on a short story when i could be getting through 1/3 of a book during that time. Like, I noticed "wasting pages" a lot more. Anyway I'd love if you repeated this experiment with a lower baseline of pages (maybe 50/day?) but no upper limit, and see how that affects your reading?
