In regards to Carrie, I’m not sure if you know that Tabitha King, Stephen’s wife, wrote the sections about her period, and insisted that this experience was included in the book. It may put that in a different light :-)
@saramustari36872 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. I heard that he threw the manuscript away because he didn't feel comfortable with how it was turning out and she fished it out and helped him rework it. I will say, I am biased. I love Carrie so much. I think a lot of people also want it to be a horror but it really is a tragedy.

I am a 50 year old muslim and i would like to clarify something concerning the novel Take it back. There is a huge misconception about islam. Some writers mislead the public by confusing islam as a religion and traditions of certain muslim countries or tribes, that has nothing to do with the religion.In Islam, it is forbidden to force anyone into marriage, but in certain tribes or communities, it is customary. In Islam every female has the right to an education and to run her own business (the prophet Muhammad's wife was a very wealthy business woman and he was her employee) If a muslim community forbids it, it's because they are far from islam, and they are applying their own rules and forcing their customs.

I think “political”/courtroom thrillers are SO impactful like you said but with the state of the world and being so constantly inundated by terrifying and frustrating news sometimes I just can’t handle anymore anxiety into my reading. I’ve been trying to focus on lighter reads so I can leave space for non-fiction works that feel really important to gain view of.

YESSSS Take It Back and The Damage are 2 of my absolute favs (ones that tackle topics like that tend to stay in my mind a lot longer than an average thriller) but i 100% agree that you definitely have to be in the headspace to read about such heavy things. also think The Damage reads as more of a drama than a thriller until that last third like you said

My favorite Jennifer Hillier was Jar of Hearts. Her newest one was pretty good too. I also listened to Little Secrets and didn't love it. It wasn't bad just very predictable. I want to read/listen to some of her blacklist stuff but haven't been able to find them on audio and that tends to be my preferred way of getting to thrillers, romance, historical fiction etc.

Mary sounds like an interesting book, but it's a shame that it wasn't all that great. I do find it funny that the author took inspiration from one of Stephen King's shortest books and then made it excessively long 😂

What Move The Dead was not for me either. That was my second one by T. Kingfisher and I gave both 3 stars. I feel like that rating was actually probably too generous. They were probably a 2.5 for me. Don't think I will be reading anymore of this author.

Great vlog! One interesting thing: King had thrown away the initial chapters of 'Carrie' in the garbage bin. His wife Tabitha recovered the manuscript and said she would help him write the book. It's part of the legends associated with Stephen King now, he talks about this in his memoir. 🙂👍

I completely agree with Mary, I liked the gore and horror elements, but it couldn’t decide what it wanted to be. I also thought it would’ve been better if it was written by a woman because sometimes it came across as a bit tone deaf to the female experience.

I don’t know if my threshold for gore is too high or it went way over my head (it happens sometimes with long audiobooks that I zone out since English isn’t my first language in the first place), but I didn’t find Mary gory or disgusting??? The only chilling parts for me were at the beginning, with her hallucinations in the bathroom. I agree the book was way too long and it felt like twice as long because of Mary, she was A LOT and a very unlikeable character. Especially with the reveal of what actually happened in her childhood, I lost any sympathy for her in that moment. Overall I liked her character in the sense that she felt real, fleshed out, like a real person, but the book middle of the road 3 star for me
