Evening, everyone ☺️ I hope you enjoy this video. Let me know in a comment down below what you have been reading recently, and if you have read any of the books I talk about here as well xx

Oh! All My Puny Sorrows is actually Miriam Toews’ fourth book, and her third novel. Perhaps it was her first published in the UK? It is her most critically acclaimed book, so that might make sense. As of 2021 she’s actually written a total of 9 books - perhaps you’d enjoy some others! 😊 I’m very fond of her for a silly reason, which is that I work in the archive of a Canadian television station, and we have a number of interviews with her spanning her career, and it’s been delightful to watch her go from really endearingly nervous in the early days, and calmer and more poised with each subsequent appearance.

Someone below commented that it's her seventh book; I Googled and it said it's her sixth, in the video I said it's her first, and you've said it's her fourth... I think there's a curse, ha! That tickled me. Anyway, yes, definitely not her debut novel; I think it was just the first reissued in this series. Also, I don't think that's a silly reason to be fond of her; I think that's lovely :) x

Oh no, a great concept for a video, but shame you only liked 1 book! That squirrel was so cute, I can't watch them for ages in my garden. The most pointless of things, burying acorns that you'll never find again 😂 That mushroom ragu looked amazing...

_All My Puny Sorrows_ is such a beautiful work. I adore Miriam Toews so much I ended up ordering a matching set of her books, which may be perhaps the purest form of a love a book hoarder can show an author. 😂

Hi Jen v glad you are recovering. Just read Shrines of Gaiety (a romp), The Ink Black Heart (social media noir), the last in the F. Klein series (satisfying finale) and just started The Thursday Murder Club (very jaunty). Recommending Red Notice to customers hanging around the non-fiction section. Essential reading (as - rightfully - says the blurb).

So sorry to hear you had such a rubbish September. Your videos certainly help me when I'm struggling so I hope you find plenty of lovely things that do the same for you. On the subject of dinner parties, I just had to comment to say that was recently sent (from my Mr B's subscription) "Dinner Party" by Sarah Gilmartin, which I really enjoyed. Not sure if you've read it since I'm quite new to your channel, though chances are you have! :) Funnily enough, the Mr B's July choice for me was a book by Miriam Toews ("Fight Night" - also fantastic, made me laugh and cry). I'd like to head to another of hers so I'm glad that All My Puny Sorrows got your seal of approval. I've just started reading "Strange Flowers" by Donal Ryan...too soon to say what I think yet! xx

Ooh, I'm writing a dinner party book, so I can't wait for that video! I've been looking for more dinner party books. That squirrel was so adorable it has ended me. Give it its own channel.

Hi Jen. This week I got some worrying medical news, found out I've lost some vision and am waiting for more tests to find out what the treatment will be. I felt drawn back to your videos for some comfort while I'm trying to get to grips with it. I'm reading When We Were Orphans by Ishiguru because I know he's a sage (I typed safe and it autocorrected but sage is correct also) pair of hands. Also The Story of Art without Men which is fab. All My Puny Sorrows sounds brilliant but probably not for me right now. Maybe an odd comment, but I have seen a lot of Serious Readers ads lately and I definitely think you did the best job! Didn't know about the space and submarines! Best wishes

I loved the Miriam Toews book; I listened to it on audio, and thought it was read brilliantly. I’ve just finished reading His Bloody Project. Next up will be Case Study and then Poor Things. Also listening to The Crimson Petal and the White on my car journeys and walks. 😊

@@moonbook12 I've raised many cats and they have different personalities, indeed, but most of them show a tendency to sit on my book, my laptop or whatever else seems to be engaging my attention. Cats are like children: they want to be the object of our attention, loved and nurtured, yet they don't like it when we overdo it, if they feel cornered and lacking freedom.

I'm so glad you enjoyed All My Puny Sorrows, Jen! Toews is one of my favourite authors. This one actually is her seventh book (might be the first one published in the UK though?), and she's written a few more since! I hope you'll find other works of hers to enjoy. The sisters theme is consistent throughout most of her fiction and I feel like she improves with every publication.

Hi, Jen! Great video for a Sunday! I haven't read any of these 4 books, though I did read Fight Night by Miriam Toews earlier this year, and it wasn't my cup of tea. As for the others books in your vlog, often the first book in a detective/mystery series is not that great, but Roseanna does not sound encouraging for the later volumes. I recently listened to Viola Davis's memoir Finding Me. It is very good, and her performance is wonderful. My only critique would be that the ending is rushed, which I think a lot of new authors come up against. I DNF'd Why Fish Don't Exist by Lulu Miller -- it's part science history and part (a large part) personal memoir, but a) I really came just for the science history and b) I didn't feel that she melded the memoir into the the rest of the book. Perhaps I would have gotten the point if I'd read past the halfway mark, as many people do love this book.

Hi Jen! I’ve just finished the audiobook ‘Unsettled Ground’ by Clare Chambers. Have you read it?. Very well narrated (quite a rarity as you say!) and pretty dark in places, but you mentioned a fear of a glass piano breaking inside a woman - there are real parallels to that idea in this book. Fascinating story and tonight I’m missing it 😔

i have read 'roseanna. i was going through an intense love affair with scandanavian mysteries and this series was highly recommended..i read the whole series and each book tackles a different social/political problem..the authors were very serious..at the end i found myself quite underwhelmed...and i think you put your finger on what the problem was for me...i never got attached to the main characters. by the way you might enjoy the bernie rhodenbarr series by lawrence block. bernie is a burglar who owns a book store in n.y.'s greenwhich village.

I don't understand about plant-based mushrooms. How can mushrooms not be plant-based?
@jenvcampbell2 жыл бұрын
All of the Fable range has been made to mimic pulled beef, so they’ve just got ‘plant based’ on the front to make sure people know it isn’t actually beef.
