Ohhhh ! I read the anthology over the weekend too ! My faves were Nature’s Mistake, Gruesome My Love, and The Call. I loved something a prof said about short stories when I was in school: Novels are meant to think thoughts for you / to work you through what you’re meant to think. Short stories are meant to introduce you to a thought - and leave you to think through it on your own.

i read the weight of blood without having read Carrie and i’m glad cause i did almost read Carrie first (i actually read a sample of the first chapter over the summer and wasn’t into it so i didn’t buy it) but I love what Tiffany D Jackson did with the story! i’ve never hated characters so much in a book (shows how great she is at writing nuanced characters and i’ve definitely met people over the course of my life like Wendy)

I solely listened to the Weight of Blood. Additionally, I've never read Carrie (only watched the 2002 film once as a teen) so I'm only vaguely familiar with the general story. All that to say, I really enjoyed the story and could not stop listening. I always love hearing how different people can walk away from the same book feeling different things.

It's interesting that The Weight of Blood is so similar to Carrie, where White Smoke was SO similar to Wait Till Helen Comes. Like, beat for beat an identical setup (but it differs as far as WS being about gentrification and some of the ending departs from the original). Were either of them marketed as retellings? It's an interesting niche, but as someone who hates retellings, I wish they said what they were on the blurb :P
