I finished the Haunting on the Hill like two days ago and it took me soooo long to read because it was my most anticipated book of the year and I was so disappointed in it an didn't care about the characters at all. I didn't like the focus on witchcraft and the supernatural when the original was really about the psychological effects of friendship between women and maybe being queer and growing up late. This return I felt didn't really delve into any psychological aspects, even though everyone was hiding something or had a dark past. they also made such a big deal about the cheating and then nothing came from it. It became an actual haunted house and not a "we've been cooped up together and lost in our own thoughts and overanalyzing everything" (though they did this well with Amanda). I thought the end was fun, but it just took way too long to get there. however, I did like the changes made to the house as it passed hands and how things were left by other renters. I also like that it payed some homage to the show.

The only one I've read is Starling House, and to me, it felt more YA fantasy than gothic horror. It wasn't bad! Just not what I was expecting in a slightly unfortunate way. If you want a good haunted house story, I loved The Hacienda! But beware, it's sort of historical fiction, so it might not be your cup of tea?

Still hoping you'll read The Amityville Horror someday. It's definitely a haunted house book and it's scary. Also I recommend The House of Long Shadows by Ambrose Ibsen, about a guy renovating a house for the viewers of his channel, and it turns out to be really haunted.

I enjoyed The Stranger Upstairs, but definitely more of a thriller. I DNFed both The Handyman Method and The Haunting on the Hill. I would recommend to you my own book called Fall of the House of Crain since you are a fan of the original Shirley Jackson book. It's a mashup between The Haunting of Hill House and Edgar Allen Poe and is set in the 1920s. If you are interested I would be willing to send you a free copy

No it didn’t for me!! I was listening to the audiobook at 2.7x speed I just slowed it down for the clip in the video where I showed it! But I still thought the sound effects were cool!

I just finished reading Starling House. It is not a haunted house book. The house is more like a "character" in the book. If you go into that book thinking it is a haunted house story, you will be disappointed. Think more like modern fairy tale with slight horror elements added in.
@pomsandbooks Жыл бұрын
Why does it seem like it’s so hard to get a haunted house story right!! I love haunted house stories, but find myself disappointed by the majority. The Spite House had so much potential but it spent too much time having conversations about the possibility of it being haunted, and spent barely any time actually showing the haunting. I hated Haunting Of Hill House and felt like there was no haunting taking place. And then my unpopular opinion is that I LOVED Home Before Dark. I know you didn’t care for September House but I’m excited to give that one a try.
