I liked what you’ve shared so far. My advice to you is: 1. Try to avoid using adverbs (verb descriptors like quietly or patiently). While these are necessary sometimes, a lot of the power is given by the context and the word itself. If you already said something like “the hunter knew the forest well and relished in keeping its peace”, even a simple verb like walked or stepped now carries that connotation of the quiet. You could also use a strong verb like “he slipped between the trees” or “the hunter stalked through the forest”. This is especially true when it comes to dialogue. The situation and the actual words spoken give us the tone of voice of the character. If someone says something “calmly” or “angrily”, chances are a reader already inferred that without having to say it. 2. Check over your details. True, detail is the essence of showing your reader a scene or a character, but it can also go overboard sometimes. Make sure every detail is necessary and adds something important to the story. Once we know the bandits are scruffy and vulgar, it doesn’t add anything to keep giving them more adjectives. Or how many times are we told Ralis (the prince, I don’t know how you chose to spell his name since this is an audiobook) isn’t like his father, he’s reserved and prefers strategy? You also introduce characters that, at least in the context of the chapters we have, have no bearing on the story. Why do we need to know about the old sage or the guardsmen if they’re not being used yet except for passing glances by the prince? These examples were examples of character descriptions, but it can be applied to setting too. Of course, it’s important to give the reader some sort of picture, but detail becomes extraneous at some point. That is one I can’t describe well, but if you again consider if a detail is important and adds something meaningful to the story, you may find places you could cut back. Like I said, I really liked this story so far and I look forward to you possibly uploading more chapters. Keep in mind with what I’ve said here that any advice you get on writing is subjective and it’s up to your opinions, your personal likes and dislikes, if you should take them into account. These aren’t rules you have to follow or “problems” with a story; if you’re happy with what you’ve written, that’s all that matters at the end of the day. Good luck, and may your pen (or pencil or keyboard or whatever) take you far.

Thanks so much! That advice was very helpful! Particularly 1, as I am often so worried of the most common fatal flaw of telling, not showing, that I go too far the other way. With the second segment, I know it seemed like a lot of characters were introduced, possibly too many feeling overwhelming, but I actually already reduced that number to only those that have bearing on the story. All will come into play significantly later

@@ForTheDreamersASMR That's wonderful! I'm so glad you've kept at it. Writing is such a long process I think a lot of people get discouraged and don't keep at it, or they get busy with more pressing matters and one day they realize it's been years since they've written. As a reader and writer myself, I feel sad for all the stories that are never "born." I'm really happy you're still working on this one and I look forward to being able to buy the book someday!

Hello. I really enjoyed this, and your assassin videos are my favourites of your content, so this was especially interesting. Thank you for sharing with us. I know I'm late here and you might not read this comment, but I'd like to make you an offer. I want to be a novel editor once I get my degree (which should be next year, if all goes well), and I would love to do a beta-read and basic edit (spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc..) for your manuscript, if that's something you'd be interested in. It can be in the future, if you aren't ready to share your written work with anyone. I really like your narrative voice, and I'm fine with gore (not so with explicit sex scenes), so if your whole book matches this content, I think I could work really well with you. I'm not professional yet, so I wouldn't charge or anything, but I do have the requisite language skills to put you on a querying level if you want to publish traditionally. (Self-publishing would need a copy edit, which is not something I'd do on a first pass.) Whatever you decide, keep up the good work. I really hope I'll get to read this book someday. Good luck, Mate! :)
