I like my American steam whistles to have at least 3 chimes; they sound much more melodious and commanding. @@5695q It certainly does sound unique, but it sounds like the whistle from a 4-4-0 built in 1870. An engine of this stature needs at least a 3-chime whistle that befits its dignity. . .

Interesting fact: While the Reading T-1s were pretty much too late to serve during World War II (the first ones came into service in late 1945), I've read that they were used on troop trains in the late 1940s and 50s, for the occupation of Germany and likely the Korean War as well (since a nationwide draft was again implemented). Their power made them ideal for the heavier than normal passenger consists. What a change in passengers for 2102 and her sisters, going from carrying hundreds, likely thousands of American servicemen to doing some of the most famous steam tourist trains in the country (the Rambles).

Why was the aux on the 1988 excursions on Conrail? What changed between 1988 and now that prevents 2102 from running on NS besides the fact that NS ended their newer steam program? And NS won’t allow the open window coaches with friction bearings now.

Wonderful, a mighty 4-8-4 brought back to life!!! Question: are the covers over the outer firebox original? Seems like a great idea, since this is the hottest surface, and this area on steam locomotives always tend to look scaley, overheated and unfinished to me.
@wayneantoniazzi27062 жыл бұрын
Firebox exteriors looked scaley, overheated and unfinished because they WERE scaley, overheated and unfinished! Paints available during the steam era, at least until it was almost over, were no-where near as good as what's available today. It was a waste of time to paint firebox exteriors and smokebox exteriors since the paint wouldn't last on those hot surfaces. What WAS done was to rub the exteriors of the above with a mixture of graphite and linseed oil. That treatment had to be renewed from time to time but it lasted longer than paint would. It's the reason you see grey smokeboxes on a lot of steam locomotives. Are the outer firebox covers original or replacement? I don't know. Could be. Does it matter much?
