Reading & Northern 2102: The Lehigh Gorge Rambles (4K)

The 2024 Iron Horse Rambles season has proven to be a historic one, as Reading & Northern 2102 traveled along the rails of the Lehigh Division under its own power for the very first time. Two excursions operated under the “Iron Horse Rambles” departed the brand new Nesquehoning Regional Station bound for destinations north, including Tunkhannock, PA and Pittston, PA, winding through the scenic Lehigh Gorge and into the heart of the Pocono Mountain Region. Ex-Reading Company 2102, a large Baldwin-built I10sa class 2-8-0 later rebuilt by the Reading as a 4-8-4 T-1, is the staple of the Iron Horse Rambles, and is well equipped to handle the fast paced journey up the grades of the former Central Railroad of New Jersey and Lehigh Valley Railroad. 2102 is my favorite Steam locomotive since her base is pretty unique compared to most Northern locomotives.

Same, 2102 is a veteran excursion star and one of the owners of her was the High Iron Company led by founder Ross Rowland Jr and they did excursions with her on both the CNJ and DL&W cut off from Hoboken to Binghamton

@ no no you’re fine! It really is just an editor’s choice, I do take letting the full train pass as a consideration to those that do enjoy it, though sometimes for video pacing it works better to cut it with a different angle to help it flow better… and for whatever I happen to choose to do as it happens 😅

I’ve always wondered, why does 2102 have two whistles? Is it like, one for the engineer, and one for the fireman depending on the curve?

I'm wondering the same thing, because it seems like they just pick a whistle at random most of the time, both whistles are beautiful and iconic but it is kinda strange

I was at Pittston when the 2102 chugged in, She was helped by 2 diesels up the grade

07:30 Why here with diesel traction? Was the line not free for the steam locomotive?

Diesels had to be added to the front of the train down the mountain between Penobscot and Pittston due to the hill being too steep to provide reliable braking with the train. Dynamic braking works better on diesels and offers better control than air over a longer distance, so it was done for safety.
