Reading RR Plow Train - G Scale

With some snow in Pennsylvania, the Reading Railroad plow train comes out to clear the mainline of my Garden Railroad.
You'll see the train struggle to get up the hill as it has to back up and attack the grade again and again until it makes it through.
The plow is made from some Bachman parts and the three GP-35s are custom altered and painted models that started life as GP-40 locos from Aristo-Craft. The plow is built around a brick to give it lots of good weight so it won't lift up when it hits big piles of snow.
The trains get their power through the rails.
I could have put on more locos, but what would have been the fun in that? Real trains stall and have to back up so let's replicate that in miniature, too.

My father had a set up of a village with a H.O. scale trains when I was little. He had every small detail accounted for. All of the buildings had lights and the railroad crossings worked. Fond memories of those trains. Namaste.

Another inch of snow and you'd have had to call out the rotary! Don't get me wrong; I'm sufficiently impressed with the effectiveness of your wedge plow. It recalls the scene in "Murder on the Orient Express" where two locomotives must charge a deep drift many times before the wedge plow finally breaks through. This is a marvelously well done video!

I need to read the titles better. I was thinking DAMN those are big trees. :) Cool video. Used to have a friend who had an indoor track that covered his entire basement, we spent hours on it to make it a scale replica of a local RR pass (complete with it's four lighted tunnels). Once done, we mounted a small camera on the front loco - it was fricken COOL. Miss those days.

I run my HO trains outside, and the secret is to plow before the snow is twenty or thirty scale feet deep. Ten millimeters, less than one half inch of snow, means almost three feet of snow on the rails in HO scale. So plow early and plow often. An excellent video. P.S. And YES I leave my trains outside. The weathering of the rolling stock is excellent, and the water is not an issue. I even have a few locomotives that will run under the water, while others stall and make electric bubbles in the water. I occasionally have issues with the wind or critters causing a derailment, or something falling on the track causing a collision or derailment that requires repairs to the unit, but real railroads run outside and models are just smaller versions of the real thing. P.S. When you repair a piece of rolling stock that ran into a giant tree limb, you give it character. ♡ T.E.N.

Dude, You got to get some weight in that plow unit. Very cool. You got to get some wings on that plow. That is some very heavy snow. If that was real life, I think that plow would have also come off the rails. Imagine 5 ft of slushy snow. Even a rotary would have gotten stuck.

As you can see, this is a lot like real railroad snow removal. I would suggest adding considerable weight to the plow car. Weight is your friend when plowing that deep of snow.
