In September 2019, it was announced that Reading was one of 69 historic high streets selected to develop plans for Heritage Action Zones. One of those zones is the Oxford Road, a main thoroughfare through Reading and a diverse hub of culture and creativity. Many people have moved to the Oxford Road in its long history, each contributing to what the Oxford Road has become today. It has been described, with pride, as ‘the world in one place’ by the people who live and work there.
Reading Museum talked to community members connected to some of the historical buildings on Oxford Road, including Trinity Church, The Pavillion, Oxford Road Community School, Reading West Station, and Battle Library.
In this video, these community members share with us their memories of Oxford Road, and tell us why Oxford Road is so important to the history of Reading.
