King has struggled in his life with alcoholism as well as drug and cigarette addiction and those themes and struggles show up a lot in his work, especially his older work when he was in the thick of it. So that's probably why there were at least a few stories in that collection that have to do with that sort of thing.

Some of these you might want to revisit again some day. I read Night Shift when I was younger and didn't like Last Rung On The Ladder or The Woman In The Room and neither resonated with me but now thirty years later they definitely have more meaning than they did in my late teens, early twenties. Lisey's Story was the same way for me. DNF'd when I read it in my twenties but later I absolutely loved it.

As far as I'm concerned this is his strongest short story collection. You are right that he really shines with the shorter format. The titular Graveyard Shift short has always been my favorite from this collection. I had forgotten how many of these were made into movies. Trucks became Maximum Overdrive, Children of the Corn got adapted and The Lawnmower Man became the biggest turd of a movie ever and had absolutely nothing to do with the source material. Try picking up his novella collection Different Seasons. Three out of those stories were adapted into movies and I think has some of his best story telling of his career.
@pixiegirl334 жыл бұрын
The adaptation for Trucks is Maximum Overdrive, I believe. The only thing I remember clearly about that movie is the AC\DC soundtrack. So many of those short stories were made into movies, some better than others. I love Stephen King short story collections.

I just finished this book. I really enjoyed The Mangler and Trucks. Trucks was actually made into a movie called Maximum Overdrive which wasn’t the greatest but was extremely entertaining. It was full on Cocaine King, the whole soundtrack was Ac/Dc an Emilio Estevez killed it by playing the lead. I recommend watching it at least once for anyone that enjoys a little bit of horror with a few cringy laughs.

I read this over a weekend around 1981 or '82 when I was in college and I had a semester with no out-of-class work and a weekend where I didn't have to work. On impulse, I grabbed the book just as the school library was closing that Friday afternoon. I thought i read all of it but years later I picked up the book again and found I hadn't read all the stories! Oh and John McDonald's and Mr. King's opening to the collection should be read; there are no spoilers. ("The shape under the sheet." Brrrr!)
