As someone with the condition, I'm going to attempt to explain (the way I understand it) what he's doing here. But before I do, in all fairness, I had trouble understanding how this video was supposed to help as well. Generally people see images/pictures as completely separate things from words/sentences. Separate topics, like English/Language class and Art class. People with dyslexia (can only *really* speak for myself here) often find visuals and pictures much easier to remember and identify than words, especially when it comes to similar-looking letters like "d,b, p, q" and "i, l". So from what I understand, What he's doing is envisioning the group of letters (the words) he's learning not as words and sentences but as images. Like.. it's easier to envision the car is parked next to a tree if you see it as a picture rather than just reading a sentences and just KNOWING what it means. That's why it takes some people longer to process the text - (I was SO slow at reading novels when I was in school). In the video above, each time he rewrites the sentence he visualizes where the word is in the sentence. I hope that makes sense... if you end up reading this comment and have found more useful resources for your son, I would be interested in discovering a new avenue for this topic. I'm not a huge fan of this video, to be honest, because even though this may help kids learn initially one of the things I was very frustrated with growing up was simply how LONG it took to read and do certain things. Though writing out the sentences helped to solidify the information in my mind it took far too long and I found it to be an unsustainable practice that I quickly lost my patience and interest in. Edit: Also, I find OpenDyslexic font to help ease reading online. It's a Chrome add-on and does not work for PDF's but a bit of research in that direction may help. Available on many ereaders.

I understand the purpose of this video but I don't consider it very informative. You don't put emphasis on why you're doing what you're doing and how it's supposed to help. I'm sure there are many people that have done research on the complexities of dyslexia but there are lots that don't really understand it or the way someone with the condition thinks. It's great that you establish that you're successful and accomplished and basically saying "don't worry, dyslexia won't hold you back", but a little more explanation about WHY you're doing what you're doing in the video would be helpful.

I found that my brain processes korean writing as pictures for some reason, so I can glance at some korean writing without reading it properly and then look away, and I can recall the text as an image in my memory and read the rest of the sentence in my brain, its really weird lol, is this what a photographic memory is like? it only seems to work for korean for me XD

For example the confusion of ‘their’ with ‘thier’ would be typical of dyslexia . Grammatical errors are not typical of dyslexia .

Dyslexia refers to spoken language. You are describing Dysgraphia, the written word.
@TheMsPants
@TheMsPants 4 жыл бұрын
KeeperOfThe10 no that’s incorrect . There are broad terms ‘Dyscalculia’ refers to all difficulties with mathematical thinking and ‘dyslexia’ refers to all difficulties with language . Check the Latin roots within the works . These can then be further broken down into subsections but the broad terms cover a whole range of language or mathematical difficulties:)

It bothers me to see while you tried to teach to differentiate the words that most people get mixed up with, proper noun was not capitalized, and there was no proper punctuation to the sentences. By the end of the video I still don't understand what is being taught, sorry.

What does this have to do with dyslexia? This is a very common spelling error or misunderstanding amongst a majority of the population .

Colouring around the words helps people with dyslexia remember what the words look like instead of how they sound ;)
@TheMsPants
@TheMsPants 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply . Yes, I understand the visual element however I don’t think it’s a good choice of words as what u are showing us more of a grammatical understanding of the rules of the English language rather than the spelling issues that’s dyslexics typically face . Why u are showing is not typical of dyslexic spelling patterns or issues .
@forreststerling461
@forreststerling461 5 жыл бұрын
The point is not learning "the rules" and "how it works". The point is remembering what "the right way" looks like... and learning to repeat it consistently. Anybody who is dyslexic or has learning problems knows one big secret....... The English language is stupid, makes no sense, has no true continuity or grammatical predictability. It's all route memorization anyways.
@TheMsPants
@TheMsPants 4 жыл бұрын
Forrest Sterling while I agree that there are many exceptions in the English language . I disagree that it’s all memorisation and phonics follows many rules that allow children to decode, read and pronounce difficult texts while understanding nothing .
