A reading the beach and water video. If you want to catch more fish, then knowing how to read water is an important skill. In this video I provide the viewer with the opportunity to view a stretch of beach and make observations on the beach structure and conditions as I make my observations and provide explanations. It's educational, and it's good practice.

Good work Rich. I’ve been thinking a lot about our conversation the other day at the pond. It got me thinking more about the cultivation of craft and the fact the catching fish is a by product of the work put into it, and that’s as much part of it too. Just thinking through some of the concepts we discussed. Oh and I found a hole in the surf and caught several good fish since I talked to you.

Hi Andrew. Carp should be hot right now. I had some last week. Yeah, I think it's safe to say that catch rate increases with the amount of time you put in and the amount of knowledge you gain. Pups should be running the ocean front around now also. I'm swamped with work right now but I'm going to try and squeeze a weekday or two in soon for some beach bucktailing.

I enjoyed the video, but next time please don’t play any music, it distracts from the content, like I’m watching the waves but the music is taking attention away from it. If you need filler material for the audio, I suggest extra commentary which I enjoy listening to anyway.

I'm thankful for these videos. I just moved to the VA Beach area and I'm trying to learn to catch fish here. I grew up in Florida catching snook and other fish at the Gulf beaches. It's very different here. All the public places I've found are pretty shallow around Newport News and Hampton and I don't see the locals catching anything big, just croakers and spots. Sooner or later I'll figure out the flounder, redfish and cobia. Stripers will be fun too hopefully. Your classes are definitely helping me look for the right areas. Thanks. Maybe I'll bump into you out there. Oh and I dig your music too. It reminds me of Steve Vai. No small praise.

Thanks for the kind words, particularly on my music. This area is very shallow by nature, so you may want to consider getting a kayak. It's made a world of difference for me. As for big fish from the surf, it's all Sandbridge and Back Bay. You can get some nice puppy drum and sharks at night during the summer, and if you know what to look for and are really persistent, you can get a cobia or two from the beach when conditions are right. The best opportunity for big fish comes soon, beginning around the 2nd week of Sept and continuing through Oct depending on the weather, during which time we have a shot at big Red Drum. It's a night bite on chunk bait (fresh spot for me), heavy conventional, long casts. Piers get them also, but I hate crowds. Thanks for watching and listening.

The short version is right along the edge. Most fish follow edges. I'll be following this video with a companion video about where I would fish this particular spot. My previous video has a companion video on a much more complicated piece of structure that goes into great detail about how I would fish the various areas at various stages of the tide. Watch those videos and it should clear up a lot of your confusion. Hit the subscribe button. There's more videos coming.

Definitely great info. I used to fish. I got longer poles and cast a good 20 yards further than anyone else which a lot of times I was the only one catching. However when the blues are running they'll slam every pole on the beach

Hi Rich! I appreciate your content, thank you for another informative video that entices thought and problem solving in your viewers. I'm really looking forward to your followup video as I've experienced these scenarios often on my coast (South Africa - Southern Cape) one suggestion to please distinguish where you would fish bait vs lures. Thanks T

In my follow up video I'll talk about both bait and lures, but in this case it'll be pretty much around the same areas. Spoiler alert, I'd fish mostly the transition areas where it goes from shallow to deeper, working both depending on the species / bait and what their preferences are.

Hello Rich. I started watching your videos years ago when I was having a lot of trouble catching fish at the beach. I was so obsessed with knowing what shape, size, and color lures to use. Your videos made a huge impact on my ability to read the beaches and so I switched my focus from what I was using to where to find them. And the results were incredible. I found that working ideal spots thoroughly that you cover in your videos proved more productive than trying to cover long stretches of barren beach; that you don’t need to always cast 200 yards if the fish could be a rod length in front of you. We’ll every now and then I return to your videos as sort of a refresher. And this week proved extremely beneficial. I was fishing a stretch of beach in Avon NJ and I noticed to sets of breaking waves that were just gradually spilling on to the beach. Between them seemed like what could be a cut or hole. And so as I watched these waves finally spill on to the beach they receded back to the ocean exactly how you explained in your video. I chose to cast to this spot and on the 2nd cast I hooked into my first bass of the season and it was a keeper at that! 30” according to the mark on my rod. And I caught it on my new custom Lamiglas rod my wife had made for me. I can’t thank you enough again for all your hard work put into those videos. It definitely shows that it’s knowledge that catches fish not the gear. Watching your videos always sort of re-imprints on my mind what to look for when ever I go out surf fishing and I’m not sure where the fish will be. Thank you again Rich

Thanks for sharing your story Anthony. They are the reason I do this. It always feels good catching fish from an area you figure out. It's not always easy, but every bit of information you can use to make decisions increases your chances of success. I'm glad you found the information I provide in my videos useful, and thanks for subscribing.

Very interesting. I assume you will fish both sides of the shallow, looking for the adequate transition points.

I would start where I am, but you bet, depending on the ocean sweep I might hoof it down to the other side of the shallows. Great question Jose! Glad to see someone gets it! Thanks man!
