Hello Professor Joseph, I very much admire your efforts to present the Quran in a fashion that is totally unbiased. I have something to add with regard to the verse about "Daraba" or striking a woman. Actually there is another verse in the Quran in which it can help better understand how to deal with this particular verse. According to Quran, prophet Job was afflicted with a serve disease as a test from Allah, which caused his wife to leave him. Prophet Job made an oath that when she comes back to him, he will strike his wife 100 lashes. So, when prophet Job recovered from his illness and his wife returned to him. He asked Allah how to deal with his oath of striking his wife 100 times. Allah revealed to Prophet Job to take a palm branch with 100 leaves and to strike his wife with it once, which will account for the 100 lashes. Here, the Quran lends us one important view of how we should deal with the verse of striking a woman. Clearly, one important and easily made interpretation is that you can emulate prophet Job with regard to interpreting that verse. Another important aspect is that even when you are extremely angry and ready to lash out against your a relative woman, you strike should be gentle without causing any pain or harm. This is combined with many verses in the Quran about being Just and Fair to all and striking a woman in such a way to cause pain or hard violates these important tenants.

It was a bit long and I got distracted with social media but I will try to watch it a second time. The observation that Muslims and non-Muslims do not read the same book is so on point. It reminded me my frustration with a friend when I was trying to help her understand the Quran. She would always focus on verses about punishment but while I was reading the same pages, I was taken away by this feeling; as if something was touching my soul, softening my heart, making me humble and considerate, easing my pain. I could never understand the huge differences in our understandings. Now I know it is a common thing between two different cultures. Sad and frustrating!

In the Quran, God orders muslims to pray, but there are no mention of the way it should be done. So muslims refer to Sunnah to learn how to pray. Same rule is applied on the word "Strike". Sunnah says no violence, no marks and no hurt. A hit by a piece of Siwak won't hurt a bird even, but it will hurt the emotions of a nobel human and it will teach him a lesson. *I don't see any for patriarchal violence here*

Brilliant lecture. Being a Western atheist it is difficult for me to understand the Islamic tradition. There are many things about Islam that bother me, but this does not give me the right to disavow the Muslim people. We all have to inhabit this world together, and we are all individuals worthy of respect. Many of the things in the lecture I had already guessed, such as the question of interpretation, but his point about axioms was very insightful. My belief is that when you immerse yourself deeply enough in another person's way of thinking, you will find that it is not very different from your own. Whether or not I believe in God is a matter of perspective, because I can really hold no objections against someone with a sophisticated understanding of his nature. To see a true God behind the world without holding to superstition is like seeing no God there, because since God's attributes are so subtle and difficult to know, speaking of "existence" in his context is merely a matter of semantics. Those who search truth cannot keep themselves from worshiping God. Indeed, when two people speak truthfully they are engaged in His worship. Modernity strikes me as a moment in which we no longer need the merely religious understanding of God, and can gain one that is genuinely philosophical and scientific, although at present science and philosophy are still severely lacking for this purpose.

Excellent lecture Prof Lumbard. I had a question about the darb verse which you were asked about. I've heard of a hadeeth narrationin Sunan Ibn Majah of the Farewell Sermon, where it states that darb in this context cannot cause pain or leave a mark, almost like a signal with a miswak. People interpret this to be like a signal that this is the last straw after which the husband will proceed with divorce. What are your thoughts on this?

110. (Remember) when Allah will say (on the Day of Resurrection). "O 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Remember My Favour to you and to your mother when I supported you with Ruh-ul-Qudus [Jibrael (Gabriel)] so that you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and when I taught you writing, Al-Hikmah (the power of understanding), the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel); and when you made out of the clay, as it were, the figure of a bird, by My Permission, and you breathed into it, and it became a bird by My Permission, and you healed those born blind, and the lepers by My Permission, and when you brought forth the dead by My Permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from you (when they resolved to kill you) since you came unto them with clear proofs, and the disbelievers among them said: 'This is nothing but evident magic.' " 111. And when I (Allah) put in the hearts of Al-Hawarieen (the disciples) [of 'Iesa (Jesus)] to believe in Me and My Messenger, they said: "We believe. And bear witness that we are Muslims." 112. (Remember) when Al-Hawariun (the disciples) said: "O 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Can your Lord send down to us a table spread (with food) from heaven?" 'Iesa (Jesus) said: "Fear Allah, if you are indeed believers." 113. They said: "We wish to eat thereof and to be stronger in Faith, and to know that you have indeed told us the truth and that we ourselves be its witnesses." 114. 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: "O Allah, our Lord! Send us from heaven a table spread (with food) that there may be for us - for the first and the last of us - a festival and a sign from You; and provide us sustenance, for You are the Best of sustainers." 115. Allah said: "I am going to send it down unto you, but if any of you after that disbelieves, then I will punish him with a torment such as I have not inflicted on anyone among (all) the 'Alamin (mankind and jinns)." 116. And (remember) when Allah will say (on the Day of Resurrection): "O 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Did you say unto men: 'Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allah?' " He will say: "Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, You would surely have known it. You know what is in my inner-self though I do not know what is in Yours, truly, You, only You, are the All-Knower of all that is hidden and unseen. 117. "Never did I say to them aught except what You (Allah) did command me to say: 'Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.' And I was a witness over them while I dwelt amongst them, but when You took me up, You were the Watcher over them, and You are a Witness to all things. (This is a great admonition and warning to the Christians of the whole world). 118. "If You punish them, they are Your slaves, and if You forgive them, verily You, only You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise ." 119. Allah will say: "This is a Day on which the truthful will profit from their truth: theirs are Gardens under which rivers flow (in Paradise) - they shall abide therein forever. Allah is pleased with them and they with Him. That is the great success (Paradise). 120. To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is therein, and He is Able to do all things. Qur’an Chapter-5 maida verse 110-120

Dear Mr Joseph... so far I have listened to 33 mins of this video... SubhanAllah what an amazing way to explain... I wish I could do the same .... I m going to listen to the entire video InShaAllah I just wanted to point out a few things... my encounter with western non Muslims have taught me that ... they need a better understanding of terms like surah, juz, names of surah and terms like hadeeth So before any explanation if these type of points are clarified several times by repeating again and again and then thru the lecture reinforce their understanding to the audience so they process those terms better and without confusion Because sometimes they fall behind on a fast paced lecture or speech because they couldn’t comprehend some of these terms that are common for Muslim understanding and they end up not digesting this info properly... I hope I wasn’t rude! JazakAllahKher! Salam 😇

I see many fellow Muslims coming up with far fetched interpretations on the verse with the word "Daraba" it Just says what it says, simple as that. No need to be ashamed of it, this is the speech of Allah. And in the same verse Allah says that first you should admonish them, then if they dont listen, abstain from her bed, and then if she still is not willing to compromise or listen striking is a last option. And the scholars said, it shouldnt be in the face, or any sensitive part of her body. And also it should not cause bleeding, swelling, leave marks. So where could that be, the bottom of her feet? Lol.

Many muslims don't understand Arabic and so a culture has formed among people to read and memorize the quran but not understand. Some of the more devout muslims wll go through the translations in urdu and occasionally the commentary. Has anyone done any studies on what book we in the sub-continent are reading and the differences in interpretation?

1) there is not a shred of manuscript evidence to support it; 2) there is too much evidence of a) internal coherence to the Quran and b) single authorship (see Behnam Sadeghi's stylometric analysis) for the theory to be viable.

@@exzoro8193 the notion that because a word may (and in this context we must emphasize may) be a loan from another language is usually of very little use for understanding what it means in its current naturalized context. Attempting to interpret any texts in this manner is known as the etymological fallacy, wherein one is more concerned about what a word would have meant if it was still in a Larin or German context rather than now in an English context. There are many false cognates and false friends across languages. When interpreting centuries old linguistic contexts that we simply cannot reconstruct, we run greater risk of corrupting the text than of understanding the text when we seek to do so.

INHERITORS OF QURAN IN THE LIGHT OF QURAN Quran is inheritance and its inheritors are the mustafa (chosen) people (Surah Faatir Verse-32). The inheritor is always superior to his /her inheritance. If the inheritor falls sick he/she spends his/her inheritance (wealth, property) to gain the lost health. In the same context if Quran encompasses roots of all knowledge (Surah aal-e-Imran Verse-61) the inheritors of Quran are city and gate of knowledge and those firmly grounded in knowledge (rasikhuna fil ilm). The true interpretation of Quran is known to Allah and those who are firmly grounded in knowledge (Surah aal-e-Imran Verse-7). ". . . If you don’t know then ask Ahlul dhikr (Surah an-Nahl Verse-43). Quran is reminder (dhikr) (Surah al-Hijr Verse-9) and its inheritors are Ahlul dhikr. " If there was a Quran with which mountains could be moved, or the earth was travelled over with it, or the dead were made to speak then it is this Quran . . ." (Surah ar-Ra’ ad Verse-31). In reality Quran is in the breast of Outo al-Ilm (those endowed with the divine knowledge) (Surah al-Ankaboot Verse-49). Hence Outo al-Ilm have the Quranic power. Allah shall exalt status of Outo al-Ilm (Surah al-Mujaadila Verse-11). Quran is light manifest (Surah an-Nisaa Verse-174) and its inheritors embody the divine guiding light. Quran is mahayman: trustworthy, dominant, guardian, protector (Surah al-Maaida Verse-48), and its inheritors are trustworthy, dominant, guardians, protectors and Vicegerents of Allah. Quran has no crookedness (Surah az-Zumar Verse-28), and its inheritors are faultless. Quran is incorruptible even iota of falsehood can’t come near it (Surah Fusillat Verse-42) and its inheritors are also infallible (masoom). Quran is insight, evidence, intelligence and thought provoking (Surah al-A’ araaf Verse-52) and its inheritors are bestowed with the divine intelligence. It is guidance, glad tidings and mercy for the Muslims (Surah an-Nahl Verse-89) and the inheritor is guide and mercy for the whole universe. It is embedded in wisdom (Surah Yaseen Verse-2) and its inheritors are apex of wisdom. Quran is truth (haq): nothing but the truth (Surah Fatir Verse-31) and the inheritors are the truthful personalities, because when the issue (fatherhood) of Hazrat Eysa (ES) could not be resolved with the Christians of Najran and Allah commanded Muhammad (SW) to say, ". . . let us bring our sons and you bring your sons, we bring our women and you bring your women and we bring our men (Nafoos) you bring your men and then we pray that Allah’s curse be on the liars" (Surah aal-e-Imran Verse-61). The Prophet took in this contest of truth (mubahylah) only the truthful personalities: Imam Hassan and Hussain (ES), Lady Fatima (SE) and Mawla Ali (ES), when He had 9 wives and His son Ibrahim was alive. Seeing them the Christians’ chief priest Abdul Masih abstained from the contest and agreed to pay nominal tax (jizya). Allah declared subject incident as the account of truth i.e. haq (Surah aal-e-Imran Verse-62). Quran is great (Surah al-Hijar Verse-87) and the inheritor sign of great news {Ali (ES) vicegerency declaration at Ghadir}. Quran is Mobeen: crystal clear (Surah Yaseen Verse-69) and its inheritor is Imam-e-Mobeen (Surah Yaseen Verse-12). It is unique and unmatchable and the joint efforts of all humans and Jinns can’t produce a Surah of its kind (Surah Yunus Verse-38) and its inheritors are matchless. It is Majeed: the apex of glory (Surah Qaaf Verse-1) and its inheritors surpass all grandeur. Quran is Tibyan: it instills conviction (Surah an-Nahl Verse -89) and its inheritors subdued falsehood with conviction. It is Furqaan: distinguishes the truth from evil (Surah al-Furqaan Verse-1) and its inheritors always distinguished truth from falsehood. After the tragedy of Karbala, recitation of Quran on the tip of the spear by the head of Imam Hussain (ES) is a glaring proof of this fact. It is Kareem: bounteous and honored (Surah al-Waaqia Verse-77) and its inheritors are bestowed with the divine honor. It is Shafa: quenches the thrust, fulfills the desires (Surah Fussilat Verse-44) and its inheritors are urge quenchers (Malik-e-Shafa). It is difficult to understand the deep meanings of Quran (Surah aal-e-Imran Verse-7) and its inheritors are divine helpers. It is absolutely pure and non can reach the depths of the meaning of Quran except the purified ones (Surah al-Waaqia Verse-79). Ahlul Bayt surpass everybody in subject category, because Mawla Ali (ES), Lady Fatima (SA) and Imam Hassan and Hussain (ES) were under the mental with Prophet Muhammad (SW) when this verse was revealed: ". . . Verily Allah intends to keep-off from you uncleanness, O you Ahlul Bayt and to keep you at the apex of purity." (Surah al-Ahzaab-33). "Allah has deposited knowledge of everything in Imam-e-Mobeen." (Surah Yaseen Verse-12) and Prophet said, "Ali is the Imam-e-Mobeen, the manifesting Imam." "Only your Vali (master, guardian, protector) is Allah, His Messenger and those who are true believers (momineen), keep up prayers and pay the poor-rate while they bow" (Surah al-Maaida Verse-55). Though, subject Verse was revealed when Ali (ES) gave his ring to a beggar while bowing down during prayers; however, Allah refers to a group of momineen associated with Mawla Ali (ES) in which the wilayah continued and who are also Vali in the same sense as Allah and the Messenger. "And whoso taketh Allah, His messenger and those true believers (momineen) for guardian will join the party of Allah, they are the victorious" (Surah al-Maaida Verse-56). "Why do you make Iblees and his progeny as your Vali, I never made them witness on the creation of universe nor on their own creation, nor could I take those who lead (others) astray for aiders" (Surah al-Kahf Verse-50, 51). As such, Allah’s Vali will be the one who was a witness on the creation of this universe! Quran is Amr (Surah at-Talaq Verse-5) and its inheritors are Ul`ìl Amr. " O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the messenger and the Ul`ìl Amr . . ." (Surah an-Nisaa Verse-59). Ul`ìl Amrare are those nominated by the Prophet all from the tribe of Quraish and told their names to Jabir bin Abdullah (RE): Ali s/o Abu Talib, Hassan s/o Ali, Hussain s/o Ali, Ali s/o Hussain, Muhammad s/o Ali, Jaffer s/o Muhammad, Mussa s/o Jaffer, Ali s/o Mussa, Muhammad s/o Ali, Ali s/o Muhammad, Hassan s/o Ali and Muhammad al-Mehdi s/o Hassan and instructed him to covey His Slaam to the 5th Vicegerent Imam Muhammad Baqar (ES) which he conveyed. Quran has no contradiction in its contents (Surah an-Nisaa Verse-82) and there is no difference of opinion on Islamic religious matters among these 12 Imams which is a glaring proof of their divine vicegerency. Hazrat Ibrahim (ES) when he was already a Prophet was given the rank of Imamat for all mankind after he passed the great test and Allah made a covenant that the rank of Imamat will continue till eternity in the lineage of Hazrat Ibrahim (ES) and that Imamat will not be given to those who are unjust i.e. Zalim (Surah al-Baqara Verse-124). Therefore, an Imam has to be free from all sins of lesser or higher degrees i.e. infallible (masoom), because Iblees has no control over him (Surah Saad Verse-83). Whom We make Imam they guide from Our instructions, are steadfast and believe firmly in Our revelations since their creation (Surah as-Sajda Verse-24). "Remember (on the day of resurrecion), we shall call all human beings with their repective Imams . . ." (Surah al-Isra Verse-71). Therefore, so long a person exists in this world the presence of an Imam is essential! On the night of Power the angles descend therein, by the permission of their Lord, with all the decrees (Surah al-Qadar Verse-4), which is an evidence of presence of a Competent Authority (Sahib-e-Amr) to whom the decrees are handed over. "Are they waiting to see if the angels come to them, or thy Lord (Himself), or certain of the signs of thy Lord! On that day when some of the signs of your Lord shall come, its faith shall not profit a soul that didn’t believe before, or earn good through its faith. Say: Wait ye; We too are waiting" (Surah al-Anaam Verse-158). In this context Prophet said, "When my 12th Vicegerent (Khalifa) will show up, Khazir and Ilyas from this world and Idrees and Eysa (ES) from the heavens will come to testify the Imamat of Muhammad al-Mehdi and Eysa (inheritor of Bible) will pray behind him (inheritor of Quran)" (Sihah Sitta). Allah bestows peace (slaam ) on the chosen (mustafa) people (Surah an-Namal Verse-59) implying those in subject category are honored with the suffix title of Elayh Slaam (peace on him). As such, in Prophet Mosque (Masjid-e-Nabwi) the names of 12 referred Imams are written with the suffix title of سلام علیہ. Moreover, the Prophet said, "I am leaving two weighty things Quran and my itrat (Ahlul Bayt), they will remain enjoined till they meet me at the pool of Kawthar on the Day of Judgment. One who remains associated with them surely will not go astray and one who remains away will perish" (Sihah Sitta). "O you who believe, be careful of (your duty to) Allah and be with the Truthful" (Surah at-Tawba Verse-119).

For centuries the Christian Church controlled understanding of Scripture by allowing interpretation only through the clergy, and then, only in Latin. The Protestant Reformation allowed for individual interpretation and the publishing of scripture in native tongues. We Muslims need to accept that learning Old Arabic and guidance from scholars are blessings but not requirements for knowing the Qurans message.

Quran is Allah's swt Only Code, Law & Guidance of Life for all of Mankind from Adam till end time, the Ultimate Purpose of Life, Mankind's Only Straight Path to Jannah the Eternal Heaven, He wrote ahead of Creations & He revealed in stages to all His chosen Prophets from Adam till He fully & finally revealed to His Last Final Prophet Muhammad pbuh. Hadiths are not part of the Quran but add ons of men in later times more than 200 years after the death of Prophet Muhammad pbuh. It rather corrupted Islam while clearly forbidden in Quran 69:44-46. It is not subject to human interpretations nor commentaries, only to be read & understood but could be translated to other languages by people duly inspired by Allah swt to translate it but to be qualified by the one translating it as it is only on the extent of his level of understanding as inspired to him by Allah swt. It is a sin of man commenting or interpreting the Quran as a perfect Words of Allah swt, man being imperfect may mislead innocent people to get wrong by reason of his wrong interpretation. There are o many mistakes, errors, internal contradictions, so that thinking that this book is from divinity is the night of mind. And of course, the Quran cannot be understood without hadiths. The modern Quran has at base no any ancient manuscript, but a recitation, Hafs recitation, which, in 1924, was turned into a book.

I am supportive of liberal muslims like Joseph Lumbard who are advocating for a kind and progressive version of Islam that accepts the modern standards of ethics and morality and the universal declaration of human rights. This would create a reformation of the Islamic religion similar to the effect of the Enlightenment of Judaism and Christianity. Lumbard and those who advocate for this progressive version of Islam must however engage in sophistry and mental gymnastics to achieve their purpose. In this lecture Lumbard is equally as dogmatic as followers of ISIS about his interpretation of Islam while giving the impression that his interpretation of Islam is non-dogmatic. He believes that his version of Islam is the true version and that of ISIS is wrong. The only way to settle this dispute is to conduct an honest reading of the quran and by examining the behavior of Muhammad and that of his closest companions. Lumbard says the "sword verses" of surah 9 were only instructions to kill certain people or tribes and not a universal declaration. First that conclusion is not supported by a reading of surah 9. The command was to kill unbelievers and polytheists. There was no expiration date on this command. The killing could only be stopped if those unbelievers and polytheists became muslims or if they were humbled and pay the tax. Islam is a religion of peace when the law of Muhammad prevails but it commanded fighting to spread the message of Islam. Surah 9 was one of the last of Muhammad's recitations when he was at the height of his political power in Medina. This passage of the quran is consistent with what was reported in the ahadith such as the following. Sahih Muslim Book 019, Hadith Number 4294. Chapter : Appointment of the leaders of expeditions by the Imam and his advice to them on etiquettes of war and related matters. It has been reported from Sulaiman b. Buraid through his father that when the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) appointed anyone as leader of an army or detachment he would especially exhort him to fear Allah and to be good to the Muslims who were with him. He would say: Fight in the name of Allah and in the way of Allah. Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war, do not embezzle the spoils ; do not break your pledge; and do not mutilate (the dead) bodies; do not kill the children. When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them. Then invite them to migrate from their lands to the land of Muhairs and inform them that, if they do so, they shall have all the privileges and obligations of the Muhajirs. If they refuse to migrate, tell them that they will have the status of Bedouin Muslims and will be subjected to the Commands of Allah like other Muslims, but they will not get any share from the spoils of war or Fai' except when they actually fight with the Muslims (against the disbelievers). If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah's help and fight them. When you lay siege to a fort and the besieged appeal to you for protection in the name of Allah and His Prophet, do not accord to them the guarantee of Allah and His Prophet, but accord to them your own guarantee and the guarantee of your companions for it is a lesser sin that the security given by you or your companions be disregarded than that the security granted in the name of Allah and His Prophet be violated When you besiege a fort and the besieged want you to let them out in accordance with Allah's Command, do not let them come out in accordance with His Command, but do so at your (own) command, for you do not know whether or not you will be able to carry out Allah's behest with regard to them. Sahih Bukhari: 8:387. Allah's Apostle said, "I have been ordered to fight the people till they say: 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.' And if they say so, pray like our prayers, face our Qibla and slaughter as we slaughter, then their blood and property will be sacred to us and we will not interfere with them except legally and their reckoning will be with Allah." Narrated Maimun ibn Siyah that he asked Anas bin Malik, "O Abu Hamza! What makes the life and property of a person sacred?" He replied, "Whoever says, 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah', faces our Qibla during the prayers, prays like us and eats our slaughtered animal, then he is a Muslim, and has got the same rights and obligations as other Muslims have."
