The reason why Jo was married off in the end was because Louisa May Alcott was forced to. The character of Jo is based off of Louisa and she never married. If the decision to keep Jo single was up to Louisa, Jo probably would have been single.
@lausommeils66684 жыл бұрын
Yes, in the final book, Jo's boys, she actually writes about Jo publishing Little Women and I think she included the bit about being told her character had to marry somebody. I also like than in that book she included a character that had a childhood friend who, like Laurie, thought was in love with her, and that Louisa May Alcott wrote that character ending up as a doctor and her friend marrying someone else.

Originally LMA wanted Jo to be a spinster. There is evidence LMA was a lesbian; she admitted in a letter to have fallen for many a pretty girl but never a man. LMA never married. The book is based on her and her sisters. take from that what you will.

I never liked Amy until Florence Pugh came along and blew me away! She was incredible in that film and now I'm re-reading the book I'm seeing the character in a whole new light. I thought it was so clever of Greta Gerwig (because of the jumping back and forth in time the film does) to have the first time we see Laurie to be in Paris with Amy. Because we see their relationship before we see him meet Jo, it's easier to accept the ending. Having said that, I bawled my eyes out in the film when Jo rejects Laurie's proposal.
@taniwalters49994 жыл бұрын
misskit123 That’s interesting, I much preferred the 1994 Kirsten Dunst version of Amy. I felt like Florence Pugh portrayed her as really unsympathetic. I am mainly thinking of the manuscript-burning scenes - I believed Dunst’s Amy when she apologised to Jo. I didn’t believe Pugh, it came across as an obligatory apology 😕 Of course respect your opinion though, and know so many people have praised Florence Pugh for her performance!

I agree with this statement. Anne of Green Gables is on of my all time favorite books and the series that follows it is also my all time favorite. It's just important going in to know it was written in installments (much like Charles Dickens work) which makes the pacing of the stories a bit strange at times. The 1980's CBC/PBS adaptions are also very well done and the highlight of my childhood definitely recommend those as well and maybe first before you watch the newer version that is also beautiful and awesome.

Overlong comment venting about widespread misogyny in Little Women fandom warning: One thing about under-represented identities (aka pretty much any identity other than straight white cis middle-class-or-higher first world male) is that we have so few examples in fiction that multiple identities end up (unintentionally!) battling for limited real estate. I read a book in which the central relationship was friendship between two girls, who loved and supported each other as deeply and significantly as we often see romantic couples doing in fiction. I saw some readers bemoaning why the author didn't make their relationship romantic instead of platonic. Wanting more wlw representation: fair and correct! But supportive female friendships are ALSO under-represented and under-valued in fiction. As are relationships involving trans and nonbinary people, people of literally every non-white color, etc. It sucks because a book (or whatever media) might contain representation of X identity, but inevitably some people will be disappointed because to them it's a missed opportunity to portray Y identity (or even X identity but differently). Each representation, because there are so few, gets burdened with expectations of comprehensiveness. All of which is a long preamble to my point, which is: I totally get the interpretation of Jo as queer. I have to (and plan to!) reread the book as an adult to see whether that interpretation is something that arises convincingly from the text for me personally, but I wouldn't be shocked if it did, and it makes sense to me why it does for some people (and, obviously, why that interpretation doesn't just make sense but APPEALS). But I'm wary of interpretations of Jo as queer that hinge to whatever large degree on the fact that she doesn't love Laurie romantically. IMO that veers uncomfortably close to "it's only okay for a girl to turn down a guy if she's gay or already has a boyfriend." (Now is the time for me to say that I don't think this is Kayla's reasoning AT ALL, she makes it totally clear that Jo not loving Laurie for literally any/no reason is valid. I've just been thinking about this a lot since seeing the movie and this video prompted me to get my feelings out!) We all know about Nice Guys who feel entitled to a woman's romantic affections just for being her friend. But I keep observing the same kind of expectations from certain SHIPPERS. For as long as I can remember, every time somebody brings up Little Women someone (or many someones) always talks about how Jo and Laurie SHOULD HAVE ended up together. They use the Nice Guy rhetoric about how Laurie "deserves" Jo, how Amy doesn't "deserve" Laurie. Instead of Laurie being the entitled Nice Guy, shippers become, like, proxy Nice Guys. FTR: I have no problem with people shipping non-canon couples! Shippers who think Jo not being in love with Laurie was unconvincingly written characterization or whatever: I disagree, but it's okay that we disagree, you do you. It's the particular justification used by SOME shippers, denying Jo the RIGHT to not love Laurie, that bothers me. All the "but they were best friends and he loved her so she should have loved him back!!!" shit. Guess what? Jo doesn't need a reason or excuse for not returning Laurie's feelings. She just doesn't! She could be queer, or she could be straight or bi and perfectly capable of falling in love with a man and wind up doing so and STILL NOT LOVE LAURIE. That is HER FUCKING PREROGATIVE. I've observed the same thing from shippers in other fandoms, and it's a pattern that drives me up the wall. (Girl in book has childhood BFF who confesses his love to her, she doesn't feel the same way, she falls for some other guy, fans are FURIOUS, she should've loved Childhood BFF because he's NICE and he LOVES HER, what a CRIME.) Again: it's fine to have a non-canon ship, fine to disagree with an author's intent or decisions, BETTER than fine to interpret awesome literary ladies as queer! But not as the only possible justification for why your ship didn't sail. And it's not okay to promote your preferred ship by denying a female character the right to refuse a male character because she doesn't have a "good enough" reason for doing so. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

But the Winona Ryder one is just so close to my heart, she gives Jo so much justice and the actor who plays Laurie is much more Laurie in my eyes. When you said that you wanted a little more from Timothee I was like YES GIRL I get you! I also watched the old color one as a kid.

It was so much fun watching you react to reading LW. I was a kid the first time I started reading it and I was so upset when Jo turned down Laurie that I quit reading. It was another year or two before I finally went back to it and read through to the end and started to understand that Jo made the right choice for herself. :D

I liked the book but I loved the movie even more. It was perfect. The casting, the acting, the visuals, the dialoges, the humor, the sad scenes... Everything was just beyond amazing.

This made me sooo happy Kayla! I have loved Little Women since I was little and I saw the movie and it was everything I wanted it to be. I am so happy you liked the book! Now I want to see what sister I would be.

Ok but Amy is my favorite sister, and I will forever defend her.

SAME. I'm sure a huge part of it was just ~projection~ on my part, since I was ALSO a Little Sister who simultaneously resented and tried to emulate my big sister, felt like I lived in her shadow but desperately wanted her approval, was seen as a spoiled bratty tagalong (sometimes fairly, sometimes not) and wanted to prove myself Grown Up, etc. So naturally as a kid Amy was my FAVORITE and I resented (and still fucking resent, tbh) how much completely undeserved hate she got from 99.99999% of readers, shipped her and Laurie, felt like I was the Sole Amy Defender on planet earth. I'm so glad to have discovered with this movie that other Amy defenders (and even Amy/Laurie shippers) exist! Also a little salty at the people who think the movie "redeemed" Amy's character, because SHE DIDN'T NEED REDEEMING, HER REDEMPTION HAPPENED IN THE BOOK AND ALSO HER WORST CRIME TO BEGIN WITH WAS BEING A YOUNG TEENAGE GIRL AND HAVING NORMAL HUMAN FAULTS, T H A N K Y O U (And then I went through the same exact fucking situation with Dawn in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. ALSO I have a lot of Thoughts about everyone's Fan-Preferred Couple, Jo/Laurie, and Nice Guy entitlement, etc., but I've already written a book so I'll shut up. I just have a lot of Feelings)

Isn't Amy the sister that throws Jo's manuscript in the fire for some petty ass reason? It's been a while since I read it but if she is, then you're up against a wave of hate because I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one that can't stand her, lol.

@@strange144 Hiii! (Cool username btw) I think this video explains the reasons behind Amy's actions in a very nuanced manner (kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4LWZ6OXbN2MbNE), but also, you do you. Have a good day 🌻

I havent read this book either, but i watch the movie years ago, but you made me want to read it, maybe next year is the year for me. It seems like wholesome book 😍, a book there is full with hughs and warm, and love from parents and still som hurt and heartache, and real life lesson.

I have loved this book for most of my life. Watching your play by play of a book I have read so many times since I was 12 years old was really a great way to spend my time this morning! I love everything about this video, Kayla. I am so glad you enjoyed it! Now read Jo's Boys! Edit now that I finished the end of the video: Please read the graphic novel Meg, Jo, Beth & Amy. It's a modern retelling and I adored it!

I read this book, when I was 14, I'm 27 now and it is still one of my favorites. Everytime you smiled reading it, I smiled and when you said you loved it and why you loved it, I started crying. Haven't seen the movie yet but I'm excited for it.
