Originally LMA wanted Jo to be a spinster. There is evidence LMA was a lesbian; she admitted in a letter to have fallen for many a pretty girl but never a man. LMA never married. The book is based on her and her sisters. take from that what you will.

The reason why Jo was married off in the end was because Louisa May Alcott was forced to. The character of Jo is based off of Louisa and she never married. If the decision to keep Jo single was up to Louisa, Jo probably would have been single.
@lausommeils6668
@lausommeils6668 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, in the final book, Jo's boys, she actually writes about Jo publishing Little Women and I think she included the bit about being told her character had to marry somebody. I also like than in that book she included a character that had a childhood friend who, like Laurie, thought was in love with her, and that Louisa May Alcott wrote that character ending up as a doctor and her friend marrying someone else.

I never liked Amy until Florence Pugh came along and blew me away! She was incredible in that film and now I'm re-reading the book I'm seeing the character in a whole new light. I thought it was so clever of Greta Gerwig (because of the jumping back and forth in time the film does) to have the first time we see Laurie to be in Paris with Amy. Because we see their relationship before we see him meet Jo, it's easier to accept the ending. Having said that, I bawled my eyes out in the film when Jo rejects Laurie's proposal.

misskit123 That’s interesting, I much preferred the 1994 Kirsten Dunst version of Amy. I felt like Florence Pugh portrayed her as really unsympathetic. I am mainly thinking of the manuscript-burning scenes - I believed Dunst’s Amy when she apologised to Jo. I didn’t believe Pugh, it came across as an obligatory apology 😕 Of course respect your opinion though, and know so many people have praised Florence Pugh for her performance!

I agree with this statement. Anne of Green Gables is on of my all time favorite books and the series that follows it is also my all time favorite. It's just important going in to know it was written in installments (much like Charles Dickens work) which makes the pacing of the stories a bit strange at times. The 1980's CBC/PBS adaptions are also very well done and the highlight of my childhood definitely recommend those as well and maybe first before you watch the newer version that is also beautiful and awesome.

If you are ever in Massachusetts I highly recommend visiting Orchard House in Concord! It’s where Louisa May Alcott wrote the book and where it’s set (though the Alcotts didn’t live there during the events fictionalized in the book - like Lizzie -Beth - never lived there). You can see the desk where she wrote the book, and May (Amy)’s artwork that she drew on the walls, and the chest of costumes they used in their plays. It’s very cool!

I was literally shouting at the TV for you to watch the Winona Ryder as Jo adaption first. I haven’t read the book but I ADORE that adaption. It will BREAK YOU as far as Jo/Laurie/Amy. And they did an incredible job incorporating the professor and gave it a bit more meat to that part which is enjoyable but still low key was sad about because JO AND LAURIE FOREVER. I really loved the new Little Women as well, casted beautifully, the pacing was very masterful. But the Winona Ryder one is just so close to my heart, she gives Jo so much justice and the actor who plays Laurie is much more Laurie in my eyes. You should also read March by Geraldine Brooks. It's a sort of retelling but from the perspective of Mr. March. Follows him through the Civil War. Also flashbacks to his and Marmee's courtship, marriage, birth of the girls, etc. It won a Pulitzer.

Alcott also wrote "Little Men," "Jo's Boys," "Eight Cousins," and a bunch of other books and short stories.

It was so much fun watching you react to reading LW. I was a kid the first time I started reading it and I was so upset when Jo turned down Laurie that I quit reading. It was another year or two before I finally went back to it and read through to the end and started to understand that Jo made the right choice for herself. :D

I had to read Little Women twice because I enjoyed it so much. It is sometimes challenging to read stories set in a different time period because there are different views today on issues brought up in books from different time periods. I enjoyed how heart warming the story was. I recently read Little Men, and it features th ed boys from Jo's school and once again I fell in love with all the characters. I saw the adaptation with Wynonna, but after you and your hubby's review I am edgar to see the new adaptation. I hope you will find more classic books to add to your favorites as great stories stand the test of time, and books can speak to us from any era.

I read this book, when I was 14, I'm 27 now and it is still one of my favorites. Everytime you smiled reading it, I smiled and when you said you loved it and why you loved it, I started crying. Haven't seen the movie yet but I'm excited for it.

I’ve never loved one of your videos more! I was so excited when I saw you made this. Little Women is my absolute favorite. And like others have mentioned, the 1994 version is amazing as well!!

This video made me start reading Little Women. I basically never read classics, especially ones published before 1900. But now I'm 100 pages in and really enjoying it!

OMG I love this video so much. I played Beth in my highschool's production of Little Women and in the scene where I die I would just lean back on the cot and listen to all the moms sob. I've never felt so powerful XD

I have loved this book for most of my life. Watching your play by play of a book I have read so many times since I was 12 years old was really a great way to spend my time this morning! I love everything about this video, Kayla. I am so glad you enjoyed it! Now read Jo's Boys! Edit now that I finished the end of the video: Please read the graphic novel Meg, Jo, Beth & Amy. It's a modern retelling and I adored it!

Little Women is my favorite book of ALL TIME! I read it for the first time when I was 12 (I am now 38). It is one of the greatest pleasures to watch someone react to your favorite novel. Everything about this brings me back to my childhood. If you haven't seen it, the Susan Sarandon movie adaptation is ABSOLUTE PERFECTION! I could be biased though lol
