Reading computer information without a mask is not a difficult skill. Easily practiced in a swimming pool on the surface without scuba. Catch a bubble of air in your hand against your eyebrow and simply look at your computer. "Ask Garry"
Thanks to Filip Coysman for videoing.

Gerrit, great clip again. A few questions if I may 1) Why do you flood your mask before taking it of? 2) IS there a reason why you tilt your head or just to demonstrate how the bubble are passing your face? 3) I tried it with drygloves today but I failed. But I did put my hand above my eyebrow. Could that be the problem?

Gerrit Leman I use dry gloves and seal a bubble in the eye socket. If you don't seal, it won't hold the air.

Just asking myself... althoug is clearly a very cool skill and extremelly well performed. Isn't a spare mask the right solution to not having to do this? Thanks, I enjoy your videos a lot, there are subtle details in every one of them which prove your dedication.

Hi Alvaro, thank you for your kind comments :-) Actually the purpose of this video is to show good buoyancy control as well as a couple of tips. When divers have to replace their mask, it may take longer underwater than you may think in land. Good buoyancy control is essential when you have no mask on. A diver may have even forgotten their mask and realise. Checking ones depth may be just as option while holding their buoyancy. :-)

I had a student that reached into his pocket for a DSMB and his spare mask went to the bottom. He did not realize he did not clip his spare mask while performing the DSMB deployment. The emergency I gave him during the DSMB was that his lost his primary mask. When he reached for his back up it in his drysuit pocket, it was not there. He was very happy that after his DSMB deployment that I allowed him to put back on his mask. He was thrilled when I handed him his spare mask after his primary was on. Sometimes you can have a very bad day and this skill seems to bridge that gap.

@@mattburden6628 That's not the first or the last time that will happen either... as you say... bridging the gap when the time taken to remove, retrieve and replace can affect anxiety and buoyancy in the process.

I tried many times. I could not hold bubbles around my eye to see my dive computer!
@Garry_Dallas

Keep trying! I let the bubbles come out of my nose rather than the regulator. They just bounce in and back out of the eye socket. Try it on the surface first.

try this at 4 degrees in a quarry lol,not a swimming pool with a bit of a chlorine

I do and have done a lot in 2 deg! but believe me any chlorine on my eyes is painful, much rather do it in the sea or fresh water quarry any day!! ;-)

Are you wearing gaitor wraps on your calves in this video?
@Garry_Dallas
@Garry_Dallas 6 жыл бұрын
mac_3k haha no :-) gaitors kinda prevent much air travelling to your feet and compress the expansion of the suit material around your calves but also the reverse is true when you accidentally get a bit too much in your feet ;-) a good fitted suit I’d what’s needed and rock boots ;-)

Garry Dallas Hey thanks for the response. This is a neat trick but what’s really nice in this video is the trim... fins nice and high, flat and total lack of movement/skulling. Having this sort of trim in drysuit doesn’t come so easy and what’s interesting is the fin choice also (RK3?) which are very light. I dive twin 12 and would probably have to add a tail weight without my jet fins.
@Garry_Dallas
@Garry_Dallas 6 жыл бұрын
mac_3k thanks :-) just for info the RK3s aren’t light..Apeks do a pair that are neutral in fresh water and an HD pair that are neutral in the sea and slightly stiffer. The heavier the fins the more gas you need in your feet/calves to support them ;-) So the obvious answer is less weight ;-)
@candyman3K
@candyman3K 6 жыл бұрын
Garry Dallas Aah wasn’t aware of the two versions, which one are you using here? Interesting approach on using lighter fins even in a drysuit. I guess you need manage the bubble carefully and run the suit tight around the calves, hence the original question about gaiters. Cheers keep the vids coming!
@Garry_Dallas
@Garry_Dallas 6 жыл бұрын
mac_3k I will do more soon thanks :-) it’s just simple physics. To be neutral, more weight, more buoyancy ;-)
