I own all of the history books you have featured. I too love the Tudor era and the Georgians. Every time I have visited England I go to Hampton Court. I was able to go to a church service the last time I was there. I am an American Episcopalian so I had no problems fitting in with the service. When we got married 40 years ago, we went to London for our honeymoon. I bought 2 small tins of sweets at the Tower: one with Elizabeth I’s portrait on it and the other with Henry VIII. The Bloomsbury notebook - you asked for ideas around what you could use it for. You could keep it as a notebook that you only use when you take expeditions to go to any of the Bloomsbury or Bloomsbury-related sites. For example, lie on the lawn at Monks House and write poetry, or simply use it as a journal to document what you saw in those places and the thoughts you had. Or, expanding on that, you could use it not just for Bloomsbury-related sites, but ANY literary sites that you go to, including other writers' homes, writers museums, or even author events or book festivals.

Yes, I've read The Voyage Out. I've read all of Virginia Woolf's novels. Just last year I re-read them all in chronological order of publication, which I've never done. I enjoyed it (but then I enjoyed all of VW's novels). You can really see her pick up her stride towards the end of the book. Interestingly, Mr and Mrs Dalloway make an appearance in The Voyage out as characters. I also think Night and Day is a much underated novel. Here's a book emoji for your birthday 📗

I am a huge Virginia Woolf fan and I have coincedentally just read 'the voyage out' for the first time. And I really unexpectedly loved it! I wouldn't have thought because it is one of Virginias earliet novels with a more novellike (less stream of conciousnesslike) writing style but who was kidding; it was still the languid, lyrical, meandering and beautiful writing that I am used to and actually really interested to see it worked out in a more plot oriented story (although still not ver plot oriented at all, considering). It just kept me reading. And I also really recognized myself very unexpectedly in many moments and described feelings and situations of the novel, even though my situation is very different. Unexpected catharsis ;) Thank you again for talking about all the interesting book and places. On to a new year full of learning, inspiration and adventure! xx📚

ive read the voyage out & it was interesting, it's a novel that definitly illuminates some of the kind of work that virginia woolf needed to do before writing to the lighthouse, mrs dalloway etc, but it definitely isnt a modernist masterpiece in the same way but considering ur a vw fan i think it will be worth your time ! happy belated birthday !

I was at TB's talk at Southwark Cathedral, too! I'm from the US and was visiting the UK for two weeks. Pre-trip, I googled what was going on in London and was lucky enough to come across a notice for her talk so of course I booked a ticket. What a thrill, TB was wonderful, as was Hodge the cat, making his attempt to steal the show. I'm like you when waiting for an autograph, I felt quite tongue-tied when it was my turn. 🙂 (And I do believe that I remember seeing you there, though I didn't recognize you at the time!) I'm absolutely in favour of the birthday week and the birthday month. I also never want a party of anything similar, I just want to be doing doings and having experiences that align with my passions. Virginia Woolf geekery incoming. I treated myself this year for my birthday, by buying a first edition copy of The Waves by Virginia Woolf, which is my favourite novel of hers, and my favourite book of all time. It was of course printed by The Hogarth Press, bound in purple. No dust jacket though because that would have increased the cost substantially.
