I thought the overall vibe of the film was soulless commercialism, best exemplified by the fact that the Iron Giant was fighting. The moral struggle of the robot was the core tension of The Iron Giant, and his willingness to sacrifice himself to save the people he cared about (and rejecting his intended design as a weapon) was incredibly moving. In this movie? His entire role in the film revolved around him fighting. It - among many other things - left a bad taste in my mouth.

That's actually a good point. That may be why I didn't love the film, soulless commercialism. Never thought of that.

@@OnMyMindEntertainment well, it's also a film about fandom, online communities and open ended intersection of properties. So it makes structural sense, anyway. In the novel it was a set of Gundams and Supaidaman's robot Leopardon, instead.

It's also not really the Iron Giant, it's a mech that looks like the iron Giant made by H. And the iron Giant is perfectly willing to sacrifice himself for what he loves.

@afterwit3620 Жыл бұрын
@@helloasa9296 You're right, and I'll admit I'm being somewhat picky, but my main thought is that the film (and the book as well, I suppose) stands firmly on including characters simply to enrich it's success with a vast array of nostalgic key-jingling. I don't know that the author was trying for that when he wrote it (he might have simply thought it would be cool), but the end result feels like it rides on the backs of superior original works to make it's own success happen. A dystopia escaped by way of vr isn't revolutionary as a core concept, and without the crop of the included genre properties I think it's safe to say the story would not have enjoyed anywhere near the success it has seen.

I really enjoyed both the movie and the book for ready player one. I listened to the audio book before I watched the movie. In the book, Percival wasn't some Hot guy, he was an average looking guy who was overweight at the beginning of the book. Later, he got into shape over the course of months, by locking himself out of the Oasis after a certain amount of time passed and he used that time to work out, eat healthier and get in shape. And The OASIS wasn't pay to win. If anything it was the opposite. You earned real money by playing the game, and if you lost money in the game, you lost it in real life. You can buy real things from inside the game, and fake things. You can go to school in the game, with real teachers. It's not just a game. IOI was literally going to put ads on like 85% of the screens of the characters, because that's how much they could put without causing seizures. The first challenge wasn't the race in the book either. It was finding one dungeon on a table l remote planet and then going through the dungeon, full of deadly traps, made after an infamous dungeon from dungeons and dragons. Wade was also the one they took in the book. How would the game know who found the Easter eggs in the real world? It's inside the game so no one can cheat, and just lie about finding it.
@OnMyMindEntertainment3 жыл бұрын
So, if the movie really followed the book, we'd have a different looking movie on our hands huh?
@SebasTian583233 жыл бұрын

Ready Player One and WW Z are great examples of amazing books being made into mediocre cash grabs. I was actually disappointed that they left out the back story for H. A gay, black teenage girl who was homeless because her mom kicked her out. It was an actual painful and moving moment when Wade didn't treat her any different when learning the truth. They were still best friends.

I am totally with you on that one dude. I was pressed hard to go see that film by my friends and pretty much everybody else raving about it. And... I don't know... it was ok I guess, I got all the references alright, but it felt kinda bland and by the numbers. Nice good guys, evil bad guys, Easter eggs galore, o feel I have seen this à million times before. And also, maybe it's just me, but I kinda miss the old times when movies revolved around great writing and practical effects. Now it seems everything is CGIed, so ok we get to see insane action scenes but it does feel fake, there are no stakes anymore. I miss movies like the Die Hard trilogy or the Mask of Zorro or Long Kiss Goodnight. They felt more real and had way more involved with the proceedings than the cgi soup we're being fed now.

I agree that this movie wasn't great. Compared to the book it was actually pretty horrible. The book isn't high art or anything, but it captures so much of what many of us loved about our childhood and the nostalgia factor is very real. The jokes about how long it took anyone to attempt going backward during the race in the beginning is irrelevant in the book, because such a stupid challenge doesn't even exist. Also why would he put part of the contest in a place that is part of a televised competition. After the first person solved it, everyone else would already know how to solve it as well. The book is so much more fleshed out and doesn't have the billion plot holes that the movie does. Do yourself a favor and either read or listen to (which is my preferred method) the book. It will be worth it and at least help you understand where the hype really came from.

The real reason IOI is “evil” is not because they want to make money. If you remember an early scene in which we see them having a meeting, Sorento says that if they get the rights to the company, they’ll have access to everyone’s VR feed and be able to place as much as 83% of the player’s visual field and fill it with flashy ads. He says that they can go as far as that without causing seizures even to people who are not normally susceptible to seizures. THAT is what’s evil.
