Did not enjoy having read the book. Stripped 80’s references to make it appeal to a younger audience. Took away the world building. Made sorento into a casual “dude” no longer the cold calculating ceo Made Daito, Shoto and og into background characters Took away the magic of art3mis appearance ( which was revealed at the end of the book) Gave wade waaaayyyy to much money at the start Forgot he was a high school student Made the movie a flat, 2d, shallow action flick Not loyal to book No depth to the puzzles, that seem kinda random and not explained properly No gritty reality check No wade locking him self away or shady business acts No tragedy to events, solutions quick simple, no real danger But ..... Good character design Nice mini refs to some video games Good cgi and sets Creative fights and action Good for the casual HORRIBLE IF YOU HAVE READ THE BOOK.

Mark is someone i admire very much. He's someone who understands what the best cinema can do, or should do. He is a fountain of knowledge, specifically when it comes to the genre of Horror...he's the guy you wanna listen to, also it helps that Mark has a PHD in Horror fiction. He is incredibly intelligent, very genuine, and from what I've heard from people who have met him, he is a very nice person, and wants to engage with young people as well.

I loved RPO too Mark! Like you, I was smiling with glee with this latest Spielberg joint when the credits started to roll. RPO was classico Spielberg blockbuster entertainment - a pure sci-fantasy action adventure (with heart) that any film buff, hardcore gamer, music lover, Baby Boomer, (my Gen X folks like "Halliday"), Millennial, and Gen Z can find something to enjoy thematically, and 'member berries reference wise... I was surprised how much I dug the Oasis and the main casts cgi avatars in said Oasis as much as I did, I gave a crap about the High 5 Clan and their quest. - THAT one particular sequence was fantastic! - Random: "Anal nathrach, orth bhais's bethad, do chel denmha!" - Merlin's Charm of Making (Excalibur) the Glaive weapon (from Krull), and early '80s style Gundam were the references I really dug.

I watched this in a packed theatre of all ages and enjoyed it thoroughly as did the young kids next to me. They were scared, laughing and were totally engrossed by it. It reminded me of watching such films as a youngster and getting that feeling of pure enjoyment. Just enjoy it for the fun film it is and my one word review is "Enchanting"

This was a good review. The key word for me was fun. That is what my son & I had when we watched it. I think that was the intent though. I'm in the process of listening to the audio book & noticed that the omission of how in-depth the OASIS plays into society & the extensive explanation of particular moments was a big difference. It didn't take away how much I enjoyed it. No mentions that this script was crafted by 2 people, one of them the author of the book. There was probably a meeting between them of what direction to take to make this story filmable without alienating core fans of the book, but to appeal to general movie audience.

I too adored the book ... and I’ve just got back from watching the film. It’s good. It’s not the book, it never could be, but the film tells the story in an abbreviated, simplified and coherent way. It achieved all a film of Ready Player One ever could ... it captured the book’s soul and played it out in a fun, engaging and faithful way.

SPOILERS SPOILERS Did anyone else think the aunt being blown up was so out of place. The bad guy kills her and the kids act like it's nothing. It's only brought up again once. To compere when the brother died in big hero six it's treated as a turning point. But here you could delete the aunts death and it make no difference.

The book has always been special to me and the screenwriters have done a good job transplanting what is a reference heavy and geek masterpiece to the silver screen. It's not perfect but Spielberg has done a great job. I'd have liked to have seen more of the dystopian world (2045) and the last acts are rushed along at such a pace that I'd have rather sat through a longer film. It succeeded in making me feel like I was watching flight of the navigator and BTTF all over again. The golden age of only two genders and 8 bit.

Not surprised to read the negative reviews from book readers below so... I loved the movie. I listened to the book in 3 days last week so the story was still very fresh. There are changes from the book I don't like. They are mentioned below but overall I went with it. Adapting Ready Player One the book is impossible. Ernest Cline created such a level of detail that you would need a 4 or 5 hour film at least. But for the 140 mins we get, Spielberg is having so much fun. And so was I.

The movie was absolutely brilliant. From start to finish. It is now placed in my top 10 movies of all time. And being a movie buff with over 2000 blu rays and nearly 100 4Ks, it's not easy to land in the top ten anymore. I can not wait for the 4K release. I will be buying ALL editions, Absolutely LOVED the movie. Have never been a book person and this is literally the ONLY movie that has made me want to buy the book.

Honestly the most surprising thing I ever heard around this film was "the film was bad and the book was amazing." No. Ready player one film- great film, has problems, but good. Ready player one book- ITS #%@&!$% TERRIBLE! The book is written in three different ways- 1. Bad story description. "They be calling themselves the sixors, nowdays, most guntors refer to them as the 'suxors' because they suck" 2.boring wikipedia article "I studied monty python, and not just holy grail either- every one of their movies, albums and books, and every episode of the original bbc series, what about the simpsons, I knew more about springfeild than I did about my own city!" 3. 17 year old rants about random stuff "That story you've heard, about how we were all created by some super powerful dude named god who just lived up in the sky, total bull&#!£, god is just a story that people have been telling each other for thousands of years, like santa claus or the easter bunny- also there is no santa claus or the easter bunny, also bull&#!£, sorry kid- deal with Wade is this awkward, misogynistic, troll, and the only thing you seem to get out of it is pride for that kind of person. Not once does wade mention the nature of the hunt, or who halliday was, or anything, he wins because he- honest to god- recites war games line by line. And after all this halliday shows up and he is like "kid, maybe dont play video games as much as I did, the real world is pretty important too or something" Ernest, dont pretend thats the theme of the book. Dear Mr kermode, I love movies and I love computer games. One thing a game like 'Dead Space 1, 2 & 3' gives me is PURE scifi interactive shock horror! Alien is one of my favorite scifi horror movies, but the game 'Dead Space' makes me jump harder and scream louder! Being a scifi fan you should at least consider a weekend bash of 'Dead Space' on the ps3. Or at least watch some review videos. If you do decide to play remember lights off, headphones on. Very mixed on the film itself but ons thing I’m definitely not mixed on is it’s use of 3D. Some of the visuals are absolutely spectacular but this is one of the very few films (along with Avatar and the original How To Train Your Dragon that where use of 3D actively enhances and complements the film. I’m that weirdo that actually likes 3D but believe you me I’ve seen a lot of mediocre to bad 3D presentations over the last 10 years. It’s rare to see it used well let alone THIS well (perticulerly at a time when the modern form of 3D is on its way out.) I’m seriously considering seeing the film again in the cinema just for the 3D

If you have a VR headset today and go online to social spaces, there are Darth Vaders, Marty Mcflys, Kemits, pop culture characters are being mashed up and used as avatars already. There is the hint of some prophetic about this film. Anything is an improvement on Crystal Skull....

It’s a Spielberg blockbuster through and through. Massive fun, exciting action and references galore for moviegoers to enjoy. Of course, as a Spielberg blockbuster, it’s also so saccharin that it hurts your teeth, it’s dumbed down to the point of pure stupidity and it’s had all of the real darkness of the book removed - and replaced with silly one-liners from one of the villains. I enjoyed this movie to a point, as an entity in itself, but even as a child of the 80s, a gamer and a lover of stuff like The Shining and Iron Giant, I really didn’t feel that I was in it’s demographic. One thing that disappointed the most was that it absolutely fails to deliver the emotions of the relationships. H is all but ignored, Wade and Samantha meet pretty much straight away, and there is a whole act of Wade meeting Morrow just removed wholesale. It’s ok as a movie in of itself, but as an adaptation of the book, it fails on every level. Although, maybe it’s unfair to say it fails, as they clearly weren’t trying to adapt the book. It’s a complete re-write.

Visual Nerdgasm But a clunky book adaptation. Too many characters, Finale, random red head who works for IOI, two Japanese ninjas that are wafer thin, Simon Peggs character the twist about him means nothing, Skull man is great wish they cut out other stuff so we could've had more of him. There's allot of characters telling us things rather then just showing them, the opening and end monologue are particularly egregious. The worst is when Artemis looks directly at the camera and explains her backstory, I can't even remember what she said other then homeless :( But an outstanding film overall 8/10

I regret going to see this film. I actually wanted to go to sleep during the first half. I found the jokes throughout were clearly aimed at an audience younger than the age certificate given to the film(12), and the characters were not believable. From the point of The Shining scene onward it was a better film, but a pattern of cheesy twists was occurring and I was wanting it to end long before it finally did. I also found the orchestral score to be very cliched and this disappointed me because I enjoyed a lot of the nostalgic 80s tracks played in other parts of the film. The themes were clearly very thoughtful and thought provoking, but the execution of the script didn't meet the same standards. It seems to me, by listening to other comments, that one of the main aspects people enjoyed about this film was that it was "fun". Not for me.

Big fan of the book. The fact that there are no more than superficial similarities between book and film utterly ruined the latter for me. I feel bad that I am not able to be objective on the film itself, but the film genuinely angered me. I had to stop watching it was so bad. Parzival/Wade, Artemis, Aich, their relationships...all utterly unrecognisable. The entire first phase of the film bears no resembelence to anything from the book. A sadly missed oportunity.

It is a brilliant film. This film will be one of Spielberg's best and...perhaps....may be a new Star Wars. I had the same hit I got from watching Star Wars as a kid in about 1983 when it was screened on the BBC. No exaggeration, the best film i've seen at the cinema.
