A SOS pad works great and I would have used some vinegar after you cleaned the rims to help kill the light rust that was still in it cracks then wash them and wax them helps a lot

Throw a little fine polish or glaze on the wheels or chrome while using the steel wool , like a 3m perfect it polish and they will clean up even easier

Those plastic razor blades are a game changer. I remember when I found them at my local parts store and bought a pack for the exact same thing you had to do, decal removal. Best fuckin little invention!! This van looks badass. I personally would have left the caps off the smoothies I prefer that look but man that looks good now.

Barkeepers Friend powder has oxalic acid in it that will disolve the rust in the cracks and pits so whatever wax or clear you put on after will last WAAYYY longer. It's also awesome at removing rust stains from mounting screws on grills or trim, around bumperbolts on chrome or painted bumpers, whatever. I used it to get rid of the rust stains on all the painted surfaces on my 1961 Studebaker Champ. It worked like frikken magic(MAGIC I tell ya'!!) and didnt harm the old original paint at all. Just make a thinpaste w water, brush it around and rinse it off after a few minutes. Comes in a can, like 3 bucks at Lowes or WalMart

When you were cleaning the chrome rims, I thought how cool the van would look with baby moons. Sure enough, you finish it up and looks like it could be cruising Huntington Beach with a couple of boards on top. Great work as usual.

The white lettering oxidizes, turning yellow, a little elbow grease wipes it right off, looking good. If you get crazy and need another van project, I've got an 89 Chevy camper special I don't need anymore. Took my family on a cross country tour, a decade ago, just sitting here ever since, Eastern North Carolina. I'm enjoying your work!

what an amazing upgrade to an old van, Karl. I swear you're an 80 year old at heart lol You really done a great job of cleaning it up for someone who can take it and do a little fix up on it. I'm surprised you didn't turn it into a whole new project. fix the little bit of rust and put those oval windows in the back sides. It would look great with some shag carpet inside with the little fuzzy balls around the top edge dangling down lol an old hippie van haha

On old motorcycle rims, we would use the steel wool as you did, but on any remaining pits we would rub in a bit of silver paint. BTW, Pledge Furniture Spray will bring the blue out in the chrome. The van came out real nice. The extra time you spent on the interior will sell this van.

When I was working for a high end resto shop i found how they got white letter and white wall tires so white. They used ordinary industrial hand cleaner citrus type that feels gritty when you use it. Very fast and simple to use and it doesn't strip the meat off your fingers. .

I love the look of the van. If you fold the vinyl end up, like you are rolling a toothpaste tube, you will find that it will split less because the pressure is equalized, and the vinyl will be easier to remove.

I used to work at a salvage yard... We used concentrated Super Clean on our floors after a tear down to get the oils out of the concrete. Great stuff! Cheap too! I use it on everything now! And yeah, it will tear up your hands!

I use to work at midas muffler and every Saturday we had to mop the floors. We would get a 5 gallon barrel of toilet bowl cleaner. We would spray the floor down and throw cups of that cleaner on the floor and it would just foam all the oil stains was gone.and the concrete looked like brand new.

Come up very nice . Feel your pain on those decals leaving an annoying residue I've done my share of removing the buggers . Love the paint yup so 70s but it's still in great condition and what a patina .. autosol and 0000 grade wool brilliant at cleaning up chrome and plastic headlights .. ( bit more elbow grease required ) . Did some work on 76 Chevy panel van in the late 80s long wheel base full wolf race custom interior great van sadly not looked after all the door bottom frames had rot on them and the cill panels . Great to see another being saved from the junk pile . Not so much a quick flip but an enjoyable couple of videos thanks Karl

Thats a sharp shorty, your doing it justice. Custom Patina, I like it. There is a tool called the "little chiseler" it's a funky shaped Teflon coated bright pink plastic peice of magic. As a sign maker I have removed tons of vinyl stickers over the years, soften the adhesive with some mineral spirits or naphtha thinner and the "lil chiseler" peals the glue off with no damage to the finish. Thanks for all you do & Rock on Brother!

My friend showed me a trick to hide the black pits on chrome by rubing them with a piece of an aluminum tray, pie dish or stove hot plate or oven foil tray after the scotch bright steel wool. Leaves a silver aluminium plating on the rough pitted parts that helps hide and protect the unplated rusty bits.
@franksgarage85512 жыл бұрын
Ever use autosol? Canuck tire sells it. Best chrome polish i have ever used. Gel-gloss for instrument cluster lenses. Even a rough lens looks great. A fine job on the wheels! Super clean is awesome. Did i just witness you putting anti-sieze on the studs? Older service manuals reccomend light oil. Typically 80 foot-lbs on 7/16” studs- dry torque. Anti-sieze throws that out the window. Floor Pan Dan,meet Boogie Van Karl! Lol Ah, the old undercoating on the trim panel trick! I have done that a lot. I opt for wafer screws from home hardware. Nice hard screws. Large diameter and thin head.

I tinted auto glass for a living back in the day. Seeing you remove the glue after removing the graphic brought back all the painful memories of why I'd never want to do that again. So, Thank you! PS. I'm 6'2" and 230lbs... picture that mass in the back seat, trying to remove a bad purple tint from the back glass of a sports car... all without removing the defrost lines. Geez-sus!
@martinjay59062 жыл бұрын
I'm a 00 steel wool fan I used it on glass and chrome to remove over spray but I gotta say coke cola and aluminum foil work really good on heavy rust like u have and laquer thinner work fast on white walls or white letters.

Awesome make over 👍 I noticed you swapped over the alloys to steel wheels. I'm sure hope you remembered to swap the wheel nuts too 👍 I have just done a video on the importance of having the correct chamfer and cones on wheel nuts as my car had the wrong ones on which were supplied as a new set. I found that the adaptors hadn't been machined fully and had to finish them off. Mine are wire wheels but the same applies to the adapter nuts and wheel nuts. Stay safe. The shorty vans are becoming popular again, I live in Ontario and their really difficult and hard to fine one in good shape around here. I think it looks good you can touch up that paint and do a bit of body work and buff it out most of it and it will look pretty cool. I like the color as well it grows on ya. Iike you said its got the ole school vibe.
@snoopu26012 жыл бұрын
Just by putting the wheels on and shining up the chrome made it look way better. That is a really cool party van. I think those square box vans are going to be a come back. Just like the square body C-10 1970s-80s I didn't know they would be asking more than when they were new. I had a really nice 1979 GMC SHORT BED with moon wheels and wide low profile. Yes I really like the old moon/smoothies wheels. There are many diffent style of tires you can make those wheels look good. Depending on the ride you are going to put them on. Then it would be the tire you are going to put on the "RIMS" If I had a 1970 Monte Carlo I would put 520s tires with wide white wall tires with moon's that would look sweet with arm-all wet looking tires!
