I use Ready Wise as my main nutrition source for disaster prep. I rotate and partially restock though my supply every few years so I never get below a 5 year life on any portion of my supply remaining on hand. So, at any given instant, I have a mix of a 5,10, 15, and 20+ year shelf life remaining. Since I stock for less than 5 years this works out well. There have been reports that some people find a lot of the Ready Wise entrees to be "soupy". I don't have that problem. I have very soft well water here in New England and I get a slightly thin sauce with my entrees, but never soupy. I think the minerals in hard water prevent moisture to soak into the pasta and sauce and this results in a more soupy sauce. So I recommend that if you want a thicker sauce, reduce the water by 10 to 20 percent if you are using hard or mineral water. Even most bottled water will have some salt/minerals in it from the source. I also move the entree to a serving plate during the last 3 minutes of the off heat/steeping phase. This allows the Entree to cool slightly and thicken a little bit. Remember, this is disaster contingency food. It is designed to be nutritious and satisfying, not so much savory or sumptuous. In the US Air Force, survival rations were purposely "dialed" back from being rich and strong in flavor. The reason is: In survival mode, the last thing you want is awesome tasting food, it only makes you crave it more, and that is not good when it comes to food rationing. The food should be on the bland side but mildly enjoyable. Also, large emergency food companies have menus that appeal to various diets (nutrition, culture, and relegious) because it can't be predicted if someone would have to starve to follow their beliefs rather than eat food that is against their beliefs. This is why many entries are vegetarian or even vegan, and you will rarely find pork in emergency menus. This is very prominent in Humanitarian MREs that are designed for a wide interest population. I find Ready Wise's menu good tasting, nutritious, balanced, satisfying, and the most cost effective. In non-emergency mode, I add butter and seasonings and add in fresh vegetables, but in emergency mode, there will be little or no butter, no fresh vegetables, and spices will be limited. I also add a bit of corn starch to my entrees in non-emergency mode if I want a thicker sauce. Ready Wise also offers meat with shelf lives of 15 years - thus they keep the meats separate from other food types.

My main criticism, as with most of these survival food kits, is the serving size. Not only do they include the drink mixes in their total “servings” but the 24 servings of food hover around 200 calories apiece. Now it’s still not awful for the price, there’s a lot of labor already done for you. But it’s unrealistic that most people could make 24 meals out of it

While at this time it's preferred to freeze dry your own stuff. Any emergency food buckets will be a good head start and better than going hungry for days at a time. Also would be a good idea to keep on hand a large and extensive spice and herb kit with your rations.

Just tried the Ready-wise Lasagna. A few things I notice, and that are not being discussed on any of the dried food pouch videos. 1) Eating out of the pouch is convenient if you really don't want to deal with dirty dishes, but it does have its disadvantages. You are going to get food on your hands when reaching down into a pouch with a spoon. Get a long handle spoon, or if you must use a container? an insulated soup thermos may be a better option. You can pour the contents into the soup thermos, and the 15 minutes re-hydration time will work as well as the pouch in that it keeps the water temperature up high enough to soften up all the hard contents. If you use an open cup, or bowl, you will have poor results if the temperature drops too quickly. 2) When trying to mix the contents in the pouch, you really need to use a butter knife that will reach all the way down to the bottom. People complain about the meal being too watery, but they never include anything about how they checked to make sure the contents were 100% mixed. My method wasn't to use a butter knife for stirring, but to shake the contents in the bag. The problem with this method is that the powder flavoring & powder cheese runs the risk of lumping up (this is why it turns out watery). You know you have lumps that haven't mixed completely when the feel of the contents in the bag (before you open it) feels wet and watery. 3) I am going to explain why these meals turn out poorly, and what you can do to make them better. If you do plan on mixing the contents while it is in the bag (by shaking) be sure to shake it up with a little air in the top. You can then remove the air and continue mixing by feeling for any lumps with your fingers. Keep mixing with your fingers until you can't find any lumps. It was after eating 90% of the contents that I found all the lumps in the bottom of the bag. Just be sure to feel for these powdery lump balls IN THE BOTTOM OF THE BAG during the mixing process. I do wish to add that the Lasagna tasted very good, and any grainy texture is due to the time the powder mix is exposed to fluids. If you do have the ability to let the mix sit for 15 additional minutes, mix again, it may remove this gritty texture.

Thank you! Just wondering, what do you think about the serving sizes for each packet? I noticed that it said 1 pouch is 4 servings, but for only 100 or 200 calories per serving is that accurate? Would it be enough for 4 people?
@FarmHomeSupplyCo
@FarmHomeSupplyCo 4 жыл бұрын
@@Kayla-tc8du I think the serving size with 4 in a pouch isn't too bad, especially for an emergency food supply. Average calories per serving is around 225 or so.

@TimKaseyMythHealer

@@Kayla-tc8du What worked for my purchase may not work for yours. Try these out in advance so you don't have any bad experiences. DO NOT buy before you go camping. Try these out weeks in advance in order to know what you are dealing with. Some of the 1 star reviews are upset about portion sizes but its dried, and when you add water it makes it heavier. I haven't tested out some of the lower weights to know for sure. People need to be more informative with their personal experiences in this area. I would also add that I may try 1.5 cups in the Lasagna next time. What works for my single packet for $5 purchase may not work for your 60 meal supply bucket. Also, wanted to say that when the chef came up with the cooking directions they may have cooked it on a heated stove. The reason I make this comment is... If you try to heat it in a pot, the water will evaporate down to the texture you desire. Don't rule out other boxed dried foods that may work even better. Zatarain's Red Beans & Rice rice is an excellent option, but it does take 20 minutes to simmer. Its 1/5th the cost, and a whole lot tastier than some of the freeze dried options: tinyurl.com/y3lknh8c
@TimKaseyMythHealer
@TimKaseyMythHealer 4 жыл бұрын
@@FarmHomeSupplyCo Also, I tried the teriaki chicken with rice, tasted horrible. Don't have any idea why it would taste so bad. It may be expecting too much for chicken to be in a bag? It may be better to buy boxed noodle with sauce and add canned chicken... I know what would have been better than the Teriyaki chicken with rice. I'm thinking about all kinds off things you can eat that don't require refrigeration. Many things are a good alternative to high priced and often horrible camping freeze dried meals.

Flavors are off or bland plus they just don't set up right. I will stick to my Mountain House, Alpine , rice, beans and what I grow and raise. That said, thanks for making the video and offering your opinion. To each their own.

I have to agree. Mountain House makes a good product that does seen to taste better than everybody else. They however are not marketing there product as 25 year last resort type things. Mountain House markets as hiker/camper fast easy meals. Wise and or Ready Wise do market that way and you would have to expect the taste will lack but you will live through a survival situation. I again agree. Grow your own stuff and can it. Buy Mountain House when you can afford it as it will last 25 years as well. Stock pile rice and beans, oats and barley. also bullion cubes. Bullion cubes last forever ever as they are usually artificially flavored anyway and have salt and MSG in them. Don't underestimate the moral boost you can gain from popping a cube in to a cup of rice to add flavor. I like your comment cap.

Nobody did and they all came to me. Taught me a lesson. I’m not the perfect Prepper by any means but this last cold spell was what I had prepped for. I had to reject 1 neighbors request for my spare generator to lend to a friend, 2nd gen would not run (my fault with bad gas) my kerosene heater went to a friend and my propane heater went to a friend. Oh turned down a second friend but he did find a generator. I heated with my solar powered Kodiak... heated a tiny 80sg ft area and was toasty warm but if that had gone out me and two dogs would have been very very cold in RV. While telling others to prep, I exposed what I had. Only 1 of those people is semi-prepping for themselves now. They prefer to landscape their yards and vacation. I’m not exaggerating. 1 did not want “a generator cluttering up the garage” (2 car garage 4 bedroom home 2 large dogs) I hope I am wrong and nothing ever happens to leave them without power. Oh the homeowner let me talk her into a water collection barrel 55 gallons.i

Simple fix repackaged them with small / medium myler bags. Use new oxygen absorbers. If you use AUGASON FARMS, the food is put strait into the buckets. Repackaged them as well for best results. Bet you any money if this were a real survival issue, this woman wouldn’t complain so much. She don’t half go on… these are for camping or serious situations. There not exactly gourmet 5 star restaurant meals. Jeez.

I'm not sure what Costco sells, we are Farm and Home Supply stores in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. But you can buy online and have it shipped to you here: www.farmandhomesupply.com/readywise-emergency-food-supply.html

What a joke, poor lady was trying to give an honest review of her poor quality soups with no nutritional value and the guy just keeps slurping away. This is not food. Please try a sample before you buy a bucket and waste your money. Many better quality options out there.

You made those sound good. What is your location and elevation? this will change the boiling temp of water and so the outcome of the preperation. I live in Denver Co, and when I tried mine it was not good. I think this was based on cooking method. let me know.

@@FarmHomeSupplyCo I am gonna try again of course, but knowing it cooked different at 500 ft elev than at 7200ft elev will allow me to change the cooking method for a better outcome. thanks

This BS. During an emergency, most often the gas and electricity is off. These all require heat!!!!! Total BS. Very expensive!!!! Better off buying canned goods....fruit, vegetables, spaghetti etc at a fraction of the cost. what a rip offf!!
