Man the Apache has such a wonderfully streamlined cockpit layout for an aircraft with so much potential and such a wide variety of capabilities. It must have been a blast to fly this and not having to dedicate so much extra situational awareness to instruments and displays so frequently.

Just compare a cockpit like this to a russian helicopter cockpit.. It seems way simpler and that makes me excited for the release because a steep learning curve just to take off makes me not even want to start. It still has to be fun imo. edit: after doing the startup training for a couple times it's actually not too bad with the "newer" helicopters like the KA-50.

Emergency jettison on the collective - sounds like someone anticipated having to use that in a real hurry!
@bronco5334

In all fairness, any situation that requires emergency jettison, probably needs to be done in a hurry and is ALSO a situation you can't afford to take your hands off the collective!

@@Dragonrc. Failing to see how that conflicts with what I said. In any situation that requires the aircrew to dump stores, they cannot afford to take their hands off the collective, because that situation requires them to actively fly the aircraft through the emergency. Engine failures close to the ground definitely count as "not the time to take your hand off the flight controls", and a mechanical fault is one of the few reasons a helicopter would need an emergency jettison. In fixed wing aircraft, there is an additional reason for emergency jettison: to clean up the aircraft to increase aerodynamic performance in response to a missile or air threat. This is ALSO not the time to take your hands off the primary flight controls. However, rotary wing aircraft are never going to defeat a missile kinetically (through energy drain tactics), whether they dump their stores or not- they just don't have the airspeed or altitude to do it. So this situation doesn't really apply to rotary wing. Meaning, the only reason for an emergency jettison is because either A) there is a mechanical fault and the pilot needs to get rid of weight to remain airborne, or B) the pilot has realized he has put the aircraft into a collision flight path that cannot be recovered from without getting rid of weight to increase climb rate (IE, pilot error). In either case, the pilot doesn't have time to take his hand off the collective to hit a button on the dash. So what I said stands. If you have to hit the emergency jettison, you are in a situation where you need your hand on the collective. I'm fully open to learning about any situation that would not conform to my assertion, if you can think of one.

In one of the photos I noticed there was a pane of glass separating the front seater from the back seater. My question is this: with that glass in the way how is the back seater supposed to throw a kneeboard at the front seater when he says or does something dumb? I feel that glass barrier will interfere with the opportunity for learning that comes with getting clocked in the head with a kneeboard.

Z pros: sidewinder integration, large 6x8 inch double MFDs with DFD, the TSS has higher zoom and resolution than at least the MTADS. Apache pros: higher survivability due to larger airframe and cockpit armor, TCDL MMA allowing for UAV flight path and sensor control, inertial guided, FCR assisted Longbow hellfire missiles, the 30mm gun system packs twice the explosive power per minute of fire with 1050/1200 rounds vs 750 on the cobra, FCR with terrain profile, air to air and air to ground modes and radar frequency interferometer. I have to admit, i love the immersion of the DCS Mi8. Manual fiddle'age of switches. I dont care for the DCS Huey, it doesnt seem to need any respect. Almost like i didnt need to learn how to fly it. The Mi8, i have to manage and plan my attacks and approaches thoughtfully. And she might be fat, but the Hip moves. Im *afraid* the DCS Apache is going to feel exactly like the Huey. LIke a video game. Eagle Dynamics has a habit of prioritizing the GUI's and OPs very low. After seeing this, it seems the Apache is nothing but a GUI and a stick. Combine with a arcade'y flight model? IDK. Someone please restore my faith in the upcoming DCS AH64d Apache module.
