Gosh this was so helpful. I’m trying to make an illustration in a watercolor style (I usually do highly-rendered digital) and oh my *god* I didn’t realize I needed to be told “just put colors down, don’t worry about being clean and have fun with it”. Thanks *so* much

I have been using photoshop for a few years, and I'm an artist but have never used it for my drawings or paintings, I have been so discouraged with the other videos of how to "act" like an artist by using all the photoshop tricks!! THANK GOD FOR YOU AND YOUR TUTORIAL! I can finally just do art on photoshop with watercolor color techniques that are as natural and close to the real thing, and allows me to be an artist without having to be a photoshop technician! lol. I've always been on the traditional side of art, especially watercolor illustrations. But I just bought a pen tablet and the whole digital art world felt so intimidating, the tools, brushes, settings etc! But this is the most sincere and humane digital art tutorial I've seen so far haha. Your voice is so comforting and loved it when you said like "Be messy, be free, and do it like how you would do it, not like how computers would do it". The whole thing seems more familiar already, thank you :)

@SaltyMaud5 жыл бұрын
Effective simple technique. I, being the dreaded _graphical designer_ i am, improved the end result by duplicating the color layer, applying find edges and a few pixels of blur and multiplying that on top of the color layer. Makes more convincing dried outlines to the "watercolor strokes". With that addition and a bit of touch up i am quite happy with the effect.

I tell you, even if i'm a noob, I think it's better having as many layers as you can. In this way your draw would be easier to edit. A long time a go I did a drawing where I created a layer for every single line of the lineart i was making. This allowed me to change some lines of it at the end of the work easier and faster than when you have all in one layer, and then i could switch between them to see which one was better
@JessBircham6 жыл бұрын
I agree sometimes it is good to have lots of layers for certain types of art. I do this for fabric art for example when I want to replicate one element over and over and move them around easily. The disadvantage to many layers is the more layers you add the larger your file size will be. You also have to be very disciplined and label each layer so you don't spend half your time searching for a certain line or element. But if it works for you then that's great - we all have to find what works best for us.

Bless your heart, this video is super easy and straightforward, and all I needed was a new brush and some guidance. I used to dread having to color b/c as good as I am at drawing, I can't color at all digitally, so now I'm learning to do it. I love the watercolor effect and although all of the other watercolor videos on YT look nice, the effects don't look genuine at all; or if they did, you still had to buy brushes and all sorts of complicated tools and actions :(

I really enjoyed this tutorial. I'm a graphic designer and I majored in illustration in University, but first I'm an artist. I tend to approach my design work by hand. My problem is that I want to use the computer more, but with the skills I have as an artist and designer, not as a Photoshop expert. However, I need to be an expert in PS to be able to create the artwork I see in my head. It's confusing. The first thing I wanted to learn was how to paint watercolour in PS and Illustrator. This was a good first step for me, I found it really helpful. I too like to do my line drawings by hand and scan them in, and you also showed a great way of deleting the background I didn't know about either. So THANK YOU, sorry for taking up so much space and rambling and I love your accent, it adds that extra touch to the video.

Chiaotzu that's my point.. I was being sarcastic. It seems that the creator of this video thinks that graphic designers are not artists. Little did she know, graphic designers study art and practice it as much, or even more than fine art artists or whatever she calls artists.
@JessBircham6 жыл бұрын
Actually I NEVER once said Graphic Designers were not real artists. I said the videos you find on KZbin with the computer effects do not feel like real art. I am trying to bridge the gap between traditional art and digital art. People who have been drawing and painting their whole lives very often have a hard time translating that to digital media. If you are going to post negative comments on my videos I will remove them as this was intended to be for people wanting to learn something not for hateful remarks. I am completely self taught on all of the Adobe software and others as well as being a traditional fine artist so you don't have to preach to me about the hours it takes to learn this stuff - because you're looking at it.

I badly needed this tutorial. I'm at a point where - not in terms of how I draw people - in terms of the type of digital line and color I use, I'm frustrated. I feel like I"m being told I have to draw this or that way to either finish something quickly or make it look good enough. I miss the line quality I have traditionally, but I didn't know how to make it work digitally with the way I colored. I was sick of the way I colored too. I remembered the artist behind the comic "A Budgie's Life" talking about how they learned to make their digital art like watercolor, and it was beautiful. But every tutorial is so mechanical like you've said. Not only did you show me how to paint, but you made me realize how I can add my traditional line style back into my work. I can just use paper again while still doing the coloring digitally. Thank you. I hope I can make a style I enjoy more and that feels me. I feel like all this time I've just been doing what everyone told me... and it's just not working out.

I can't agree with you more about staying an artist! It took me a bit of time to find a way to stay traditional in the digital format. It's not quite the same as drawing with graphite or painting oil on canvas, but it does have its own set of skills and techniques. Messy is definitely a good way to go. Just like you said; "art isn't perfect". Each piece should have its own bit of personality, so it's good to be a little careless when making a piece. It also allows you to relax and find the freedom to experiment as you go, which is really what art is about. I thank you very much for this insightful technique and I'll be sure to incorporate it into my own style and see what I can come up with.

Thank you for this video! I've watched other digital watercolor tutorials, and most of their process takes so long that you could do 2 or 3 physical paintings in the time it takes to do one digital one.

Exactly! That was my thought too. Glad you liked my video - thanks for watching!

Actually, digital art is a different form of art. As a graphic design major I’ve realized it’s not all about drawing and painting, it’s about how you can create and design, whether it be logo design, business cards, menus, web designs, etc. It still takes an extremely creative mind to be a graphic designer. If you’re an artist, you should know this.

I do a lot of graphic design myself - I'm not knocking graphic designers - art is a fluid concept. This video is meant to help those who want to do traditional art but on a digital platform.

Brilliant technique! I was all confused and almost devastated to know some simpler technique and you just made my life easier. 3 years ago yeah but your latest version of this is amazing all the same.

I do both studio art and graphic design, but after graduating from college, old school studio art quickly fell by the wayside. I agree with you! After I began working at a ministry as a designer, I began to view art as less of a job and more like a gift I'd been given by God. This year I knew something was off. Turning out digital graphic after digital graphic just....seemed sterile. So two months ago, when I was given a brochure to do, I felt deep down that this wasn't supposed to be done all digitally. God was pressing me to pour myself out for it. So for the first time, I decided to do a blend of digital and old-school painting. I broke out the watercolors and paintbrush, and ended up painting much of the brochure. This blend of the two feels way more fulfilling. Thank you for this tutorial! I came here because I'd like to try "painting" in PS as well, and this is simple and straight to the point!

That's wonderful! There is a certain sort of magic that happens when you draw straight on paper and I didn't want to lose that - that is why I love this technique. It's a digital world these days and I am thankful for the use of Photoshop but blending both is so much more fulfilling. Good luck in your artistic pursuits!

I’m new on photoshop and was overwhelmed on the possibilities and it’s uses and don’t know where to begin. Watching your video/s, it motivated me to continue on working on my first children’s book without being overwhelmed by it. More videos please!!
