Sept 1st 2019 - Video showing our Intentional, power off landing when our throttle cable broke off leaving engine at full throttle. Thankful for everyone involved and the flight planning around a 10k foot runway with intersecting options to give us margin and options while circling the field.
Encourage everyone to practice this situation safely with a CFI. When mixture comes out the engine is not just on or off, was able to basically control RPMs with a few backfires but was a stabilized approach in the end.
ATC's amazing coordination, professionalism, and the people we met as a result make this learning experience one we took a lot from.
Grateful for our mechanic, the A&P at KMEI (AJ), and the Meridian staff who were wonderful to us. Chad G from Houston who flew out to pick us up without hesitation, and the entire United Flight Systems staff of CFIs who prepared me well, and the owner Bobby D who flew me back to pickup the plane after AJ fixed it for us on his long weekend.
Thanks to below for closing credits music! Love their work

All I can say is wow! The positive comments and messages on Instagram is really touching. We debated sharing this video but opted to in hopes of some awareness and to show appreciation to ATC. As requested we will do a small follow up either here or Instagram @familypilot There are bigger emergencies everyday but we took a lot from this one and we’re happy some others have benefited as well. Better every day!

What may be interesting, if it can be done, is to get your wife's thoughts on this situation. I kept looking at her and some glances of your children in the rear and while I realized that you had survived this incident I kept telling myself that I would sacrifice some my years for you guys to have more on this earth. I spent 27 years in the Marines under some seriously bad situations and seen more than anyone should but I was more emotionally involved in your problem than anything before. As I mentioned in my other comment love your family.

OK, I'll play devils advocate here. 1st, glad you landed safely! (No sarcasm!)...but C'mon man...From your first student flight thru your 1st check ride you practice zero throttle (catastrophic engine failure) landings routinely. And *not* in sight of an airport most of the time. (My instructors sometimes didn't give me power back till 100 ft agl, over fields)! You were in nearly CAVU conditions with a 10Kft runway to use....You had a constant velocity prop correct (the Arrows I flew did)? So basically, this was a routine landing other than you pulled mags at or just before/after touchdown. Just not that miraculous of a landing, sorry. I once came in "on the lights" with smoke in the cockpit...heavy smoke! I didn't declare an emergency and certainly didn't ask for the "equipment" so to have 15 firetrucks chasing me down the runway. So I'm your token naysayer....every post needs one. :). Nice normal landing though...

I think this video also shows a couple bravely facing death together with stoicism and remarkable courage. It shows remarkable trust between you and your wife. She did not once interfere with your flying but sent relevant messages and secured the children. When facing the challenges of life remember you have faced death together and won. I am so glad you did share it.

Absolutely....full better than no throttle! Didn’t understand the dilemma of not being able to get to gear extension speed with a WOT. If put into a 1000ft/min climb I’m sure that would’ve provided ample margin for gear extension speed. From that point it’s just a matter of lining up on a 10k ft runway on a stable approach and pull the mixture. I know things like this in the cockpit can be nerve wracking. I’ve dead-sticked on a winding country road because the carb needle valve seat wasn’t safety wired when overhauled, backed out and jammed the float closed....totally starving the engine for fuel. Did it successfully with no damage to plane or people. Thank God. 😉

@@roygould9454 You are not wrong. Shit, when I was a kid I saved up and bought a greyscale Palm Pilot which I tinkered with, but today... My god these kids are absolutely WIRED to these devices in the key stages of growth. I just saw a different video where this guy's kids have never been in a prop plane, and during an EMERGENCY nonetheless, but were just GLUED to their screens the entire time! Even when the plane is violently shaking and the pilot is saying "This is an emergency, mayday etc". They were just fixated on their screens! I am not a technology pundit, I fully believe in the benefits of technology in relation to mankind but I can't help but be concerned at the future generations. If you thought millennials were bad.... On the other hand, better to have a kid playing fortnite than a kid panicking in the back seat of an airplane.

I know ! I was hoping our pilot was not listening to that ! In hinesight he would have said : "Okay ! No problem ! He'll get that landing licked without a hitch !" Does seem simple... gliders do it every day, right ? Was it cuz the landing gear cannot go down without the engine or something ? If those planes needed power to land we'd lose half our pilots ! They don't ! Easy for me to say right ? ! Sitting in my comfortable chair tapping away on the computer.

@shaunolinger964
@shaunolinger964 5 жыл бұрын
@@sonnymoon6465 There's a "maximum extension speed" limit on the gear. Usually it involves the gear doors more than the gear themselves. Too fast and you start tearing stuff off the plane, and that damages other stuff. At full throttle he's WAY above that speed limit. I suspect, since he didn't show it, that he leaned the mixture out until the engine didn't quite die, combined with a climb to dump airspeed. Got the gear down. Maybe flaps too to help keep it slowed down, but again I didn't see anything about that. Flew it to short final, pulled the mixture to cutoff, and greased it in pretty as you please. It's a funny paradox, but emergency landings are often the best, smoothest, most perfect landings a pilot will ever achieve.

I am still a student pilot with more than 250 hrs on a C172 (an hr or so on a Cirrus) and have only 3 hours in a C182, and Cirrus....I have understood Mike M's comments completely. It seems that the key is to get the gear down without exceeding the maximum speed for gear. Once the gear is down, no power landing will become routine as practiced and trained, particularly in a long run way. Surely, when one's family is on board, it is nerve-wrenching to deal with any unusual situation, particularly the first time. I applauded for their calm demeanors and thank you for sharing. I did get emotional at the end while watching. I do have smaller children and could not have imagined what my thoughts would have been in an emergency situation like this one....regardless, aviate and navigate would have to come to mind....good job done and thanks for sharing such a family private moment. Hi Devon, thanks for such a great video. I'm a 5000 hr CFI from Australia with about 2000 hrs in Arrows. You (and your wife) did a great job with handling this situation. You were taught well. I think some of the comments by pro pilots are a little harsh. Professional pilots think about this type of situation every day, instructors live and breath this type of problem 5 days a week. I've done this scenario with students at least 400 times in Arrows alone. But PPL's mostly don't have the time or resources to practice emergencies as often as we would like, that's just life. So you get a big "Great Job Mate". This video also shows why I fell in love with this industry as a young boy, the professionalism of everyone involved, the ATCO's, ARFF, Mechanics, friends, family and complete strangers alike. There is a saying that "aviation attracts good people", and this video shows that admirably. Thanks for allowing us to be part of this wonderful learning experience.

That happened to me in early 1980s, Cherokee 140, Downtown Airport in Kansas City. I was a student with my instructor, doing touch and goes. The engine had just been overhauled. I had made a routine landing, but at touchdown, the throttle cable just snapped and went full. We lost it we lost I screamed, and demoed what I meant by pushing and pulling the throttle, I raised the flaps and then he took over. He never hesitated and we took off. He was concerned about rpm’s on the new engine so we climbed steeply, took us around with the tower giving us priority. He made a very long final, we were very high at this point. We were just below do not exceed speed when he cut the engine and we screamed in, bled off the speed and he hit the runway like a normal landing, the FBO had the truck rolling out to meet us and he made the first exit. I’ll never forget. I don’t know what I would have done if he wasn’t there. RIP Jay Pouzar.

Credit where credit is due.... Good example of Threat and Error Management at work where the “Time” was managed, put himself over the top of an airport. Aviated first, Navigated and then Communicated with additional resources. The threat was there and the error would have been to “assume” there wasn’t a secondary failure within the throttle linkage at anytime. This is a superb example of Single Pilot Resource Management. As a CFI, I'd like to commend you on staying calm under pressure and troubleshooting the problem. You had great single pilot resource management as well. You used all available resources from ATC to your wife and your mechanic. Great job getting the airplane and your family down safely! I couldn't tell after you shut down the engine if you were able to pull the prop lever back or not. I read an article in aopa a while back that talked about this. When we practice power off 180s in the arrow or many other complex single engine airplanes we don't pull the prop lever back. In the arrow poh it says to pull the prop lever back during an engine out to increase the glide distance by reducing drag. That's why it drops like a rock when we practice the power off 180s.
@hempelcx
@hempelcx 5 жыл бұрын
As the RPM drops so does your ability to 'feather' the prop. But if you do it immediately after killing the engine there is likely enough juice to make it happen - worth trying if you need to extend the glide. In this (unusual) circumstance, he had power until he decided to cut it and he could have restarted the engine for a go-around and was fully prepared for that option. So IMO in this case it's a better choice to leave the prop full-forward.

@randyporter3491
@randyporter3491 5 жыл бұрын
I get your point robert, I’ve been a pilot for over 25 years and I agree to a point. The basic principles you reference are taught as a procedural generalities. not emergency procedures for all situations. But it opens a lengthy debate, based on a lot of factors, including aircraft type, atmospheric conditions, rate of climb capabilities etc. Increasing AOA to bleed speed, when at full power, will cause a climb and increased altitude. Once the gear is extended, the necessary decent may cause an over speed situation that’s not recommended for a particular aircraft, much like max flap speed. I don’t know the numbers on this particular airplane and I wasn’t in his seat at that time. That alone tells me to congratulate the pilots solution and not claim to have a better way of dealing with it. I certainly wouldn’t say anything is “quite simple” when sitting on the couch and not in his seat.

Good job! If your throttle cable breaks you simply use the mixture as a spare throttle. It is pretty easy and better than getting to the airport and switching off the ignition because reducing the mixture starves the cylinders of fuel and you can just add the mixture back in and the engine will start and make power again. If you switch on the ignition and then figure out you need power or have to go around and switch it back on KABOOM (if you didn't shut it down with the mixture).Declare, fly over a big airport in cooperation with ATC, get within easy gliding distance above the fiel (as you did)d, climb until the airspeed drops to just above your airspeed, and nose over to hold speed and drop the gear and partial flaps when safe. You can pull the mixture if the resulting "dirty" config doesn't have you at a good approach speed and put it back in for bursts of power on demand since the windmilling prop should restart the engine pretty immediately. Then just use that config to land adding power in-out if necessary by brining the mixture in and out. I used to have a PA28, now have a Mooney, but this would work in most recip general aviation aircraft, you should of course consider any internet advise in light of your aircraft, training and systems.

The exact same thing happened to me about 7 years ago in a Cherokee 140. Two pilots on board. Declared an emergency and went to local airport with a long runway. Because the 140 is fixed gear, didn't have the problem of being overspeed for a gear extension. We used mixture to modulate throttle. Once on final and we had the runway guaranteed, we killed the engine and glided to a good landing -- even managed to coast onto the high speed turnoff! Good job and glad you and your family are well!

I was wondering if he could have climbed to slow the plane to get the gear down, but maybe there’s a max speed with gear down that would have quickly been exceeded at full throttle once he leveled back off... don’t have my complex endorsement yet so not sure
@FamilyPilot
@FamilyPilot 5 жыл бұрын
If we climb, then we have to descend again. Trained for power offs and that was my plan. Encourage everyone to chat with CFI and not just what I did. But when I did get on final I was 150knots. A right 360 then a little pitch up to drop IAS. Dropped gear when it was 2 knots below gear speed but then leveled - introducing drag with nose up... low... didn’t want to hang out there too long. But then playing with flaps once below vfe and mixture slowed us for a stable approach. :)

Great job keeping a "controllable" emergency from becoming something worse. Absolutely love the cockpit teamwork and control of the panic. Many family passengers in GA would become a high level of distraction for the pilot trying to think through options but you were awesome together! Held the emotions in check until the work was done. The look of relief when it was time to recognize emotion was palpable. You should ignore anyone with a blah blah comment about what another pilot has done or would have done. It's YOUR family in your hands and it's your experience and skill level taking on an unforeseen challenge without making it worse. Decisive declaration of an emergency to get all available assistance was absolutely the right idea and would have been clutch if the situation degraded further before or upon landing. I have had many fun flying adventures with my family over the years and hope the same for you. Happy and safe flying in the future!

That plane was used for flight training in a Florida flight school that puts a big amount of hours on their airplanes over a short period of time due to the size of the academy and the amount of people who train there. I used to fly it myself. The plane is extremely stable and easy to fly, but would always have things breaking down here and there. These planes have also been flown hard by the students who got taught on it. I wouldn't be surprised that you got it for a very cheap price, so be careful. They also had a recall last year about the spar ribs in the wings after a crash that happened in Daytona at the beginning of 2018. You did your job as a pilot sir, and the look on both of your faces as soon as you were clear of the runway says everything no words can. a lot of respect, and thank god you guys are okay. Another big shot out to the controllers that did there job to help you in anyway they could. nicely done guys.

last spring I had the opposite emergency, engine went to idle.We glided 6 miles in a 182 (brick) to an non-towered airport in southern Ohio. All caused by a careless A&P not bending over a cotter pin, I now practice power off landings on a monthly basis. It also made me absolutely conscious of where every airport is around me at all times. Glad everyone is ok!

Darned right, don’t trust ANYBODY with those things. I never even thought a runaway throttle would be an issue. Just arrive high and starve it down with the mixture. That or just come straight in at pattern altitude and cut the key then add flaps as needed . Power off landings should be practiced regularly so they’re no big deal.

Its amazing with all the checks balances and safety's that a single cotter pin is the single point of failure for something so critical
