I think "every" natural understands where u're coming from, especially me.When I first started out (the 1st yr & a half) my hair also has so much shrinkage that I had no choice but to put it in protective styles. But, eventually, taking care of my hair & wearing it in protective styles paid off. & now, my length affords me more styling options. Be patient, keep ur hair protected & well moisturized & in no time u will have enough length to place ur hair in a ponytail w/ a BIG afro puff.

1 for me😕 i hate wearing protective styles because i enjoy my hair out. I feel sexy when wearing my hair out and showing my length but i do understand that wearing it protected is most beneficial against the air drying out my good products lol therefore i have opted to keep my hair protected throughout the work week, and let my hair out on the weekends (preferably sat&sun) bc those are the days I actually go somewhere 😜. So I'll basically have my hair protected about 85% of the time. And thats a come up! Love your vids!

I'm a 7. My hair grows like crazy when left alone--however, I must always incorporate Marley hair into my protective styles, cuz my very fine hair looks "scalpy" when twisted up.Sometimes I'd wear my stretched hair (African threading is da bomb y'all!) out---but I find maintaining stretched styles requires too much manipulation.

I'm a 7 now because I want to have long healthy hair I do twists but tie my hair up with bobby pins not bobbles. So its not rubbing on my clothes. I undo it the day before wash day to let it breathe I also wash my hair every week to avoid build up. I still get comments from work colleagues about my hair looking shorter (when it's protected) but it doesn't faze me. I'm on a mission!!

the small TWA stage is a great opportunity to wear wash and goes b/c your ends are not rubbing on anything. As you are, continue to keep your hair moisturized. Enjoy your TWA now b/c once your hair grows out (hangs), if your goal is length, you won't be able to wear wash and go's as much.

I place myself at a 7. I love wearing my hair in twists! I'd say the hardest part about it is, like you said, resisting the urge to unravel and play with my loose hair :( I'm getting pretty good at leaving it alone though. I'm really btrying to grow my hair as long as possible.

I love your channel! I’m a 7 I keep my hair protected all year, refreshing every 6 weeks and I’ve retained length for the first time in my life! ♥️ in wear wigs when I go out and take them off at home and I Spritz with aloe juice in the mornings and oil with my Ayurvedic infused oils at night... and I sleep with a satin scarf cuz the satin pillow case didn’t feel as comfortable as cotton ... since I committed to my silk scarf I see my edges thickening even more then before. I learned more about amla, shakaki and brahmi from your channel ♥️ thanks for putting together excellent and informative videos.. I will continue to share them. Much love

Probably a 2 or 3. I love having my hair all out so it can be a kickass fro! Buuuut it has been the same length forever and I am now starting to see the value of protective styling. My biggest annoyance with protective styling is that I think my hair just looks boring so I always take it out earlier than I planned

When having natural hair with thin strands, I cringe at having to do protective styles. I have tried banding recently and I have noticed that with all of the bands I am putting in my hair, the breakage is toward the root and not at the bottom (ends). When you band or thread your hair with shea butter or grease (after moisturizing first), you WILL notice the length immediately. However, with thin strands you may tend to get nervous sleeping in this protective style. Banding with silk/satin scrunchies has helped and with hair loosely twisted or braided adds extra later of protection, especially when I oil/grease the tips of my ends every morning and night. I recommend leaving them in for no longer than two weeks because either it will be be re-moisturization day or wash day by the time you redo them to avoid breakage.

I'm a 7. I wear my natural hair twisted up about 80 percentage of the whole year. But I also have the tendency to just forget it and not take care of it properly. So it ends up breaking a lot when I take it out. I'm definitely going to change now. Thanks for this video.

I'm a 5. I don't add hair to my styles or use heat so the most difficult thing for me is the tangles if I leave my hair braided or twisted too long. It takes a little extra care to detangle it. Most times I twist it and take it down the next day and re twist it 3-4 days later after re moisturizing it.

5 for me. I always love protctive styles because not only does it protect my hair, it's low maintenance with easy and beautiful hairstyles. Plus, colorful extensions is a great way add color without dying your natural hair. The only miss is that the braids can be really tight for my hair, and I have them in for so long I sometimes forget my curl texture and pattern

1. I prefer protective styles due to shrinkage as I live in a humid climate. I also enjoy the ease of styling and maintenance so its a 6 for me. 2. The hardest thing about protective styles is the frizzing from moisturising. When I have braids or cornrows they don't last long without frizzing out and I don't like how it looks so I have to take them down quickly because of that, but will be experimenting with crochet senegalese twists soon and see how that goes. Another thing is that I have a tapered haircut but I'm growing it out so styling and concealing my ends when in mini twists can be a mission.

As long as you properly watch and pay attention to your hair to make sure it dose not start the dread process and wash your scalp right when it gets dirty, then its okay to leave your protective style in longer. Just keep in mind that leaving your hair in a protective style longer dose not mean you are completely off the hook from caring for your hair. Keep it clean and neat :-)

Yes it is. As long as your hair is off your shoulders. The only thing is that a loose bun requires you to manipulate it often (especially at night). So if you can try doing a PS for at leaset two weeks out the month, that does not require any mainipulate. You can wear your hair in the loose high bun or a low manipulation style for the remaining 2 weeks

Hi I have been looking at youtube hair videos for the past five months or so and you are the first person that has inspired me enough to subscribe to your channel. I think you are doing a wonderful job at educating people about proper natural hair care. My profile pic is of my daughter who is now 4 years old and her hair problem is the main reason why I'm being brave and communicating with you right now. She has very thick, long hair (somewhere btwn type 4b and 4c hair) that has within the last few months begin to suffer from dryness. I recently took her to the doctor who diagnosed it as Seborrheic Dermatitis. Even though I have only come across your videos in the last 2 days I know you will be a great help in eradicating or at least controlling this problem. I really need advice as to what I should do to help her hair retain moisture and get rid of her dry scalp. We live in the West Indies so the climate is always hot. Thanking you in advance. Concerned Mother

I would say for my daughter's hair my rating would be a 5 since most of time especially during the week for school it's a lot easier to NOT have to comb her hair every morning. The problem of her hair and scalp being dry though is what is preventing me from using protective styles as often as I used to.

Ah yes. This VERY sensible video plus she is an pre-mainstream natural person like I am. THIS is exactly what we always said were protective styles. It wasn't just 3 styles with synth hair like portrayed today. It was synth hair AND various hairstyles using our OWN hair. You can even wear the hair out just make sure the ends are well protected by not touching the material of your shirts and outerwear. Or put on silk/satin scarves or silk/satin shirts. OR well moisten the tail part of the pony and tuck the ends up so they aren't touching anything. (sigh) I miss real naturals like this.

The most difficult thing to do while I'm wearing protective styles is washing my hair because after it gets dry, my hair always frizzes in the box braids or twists, which makes my protective styles last less longer than it should... On a scale of 1 to 7, I'd say 4. I really enjoy wearing protective styles because it's a lot easier when I wake up in the morning and I don't have to manipulate them, but I'm also very proud to show my natural 4c crown. By the way, if you have the time of course, could you please make a video of how to grow and take care of your nape hair or "kitchen" as others call it, please? I've seen your video about edges and tried your method which worked for me, but only on my edges and not on my nape hair... Thanks for your amazing advices, you are really inspiring!

I'm somewhere in the middle. I had some breakage on the left side of my head from a protective style and I was like what?! I thought a protective style was supposed to prevent breakage. I had my hair braided down to the back like cornrows and then crocheted kanekalon hair into the braids. Idk if the breakage same from me not wearing a satin cap like I normally do, because I thought my hair would be fine b/c of the fake hair covering it. The hair didn't cover the sides that much though, so I guess with rubbing and some scratching every now and then, it broke off. One important thing to remember is we still have to take care of our hair even when it's "protected."

Rather then moisturizing your hair everyday, try moisturizing it every night before bed by layering it. So, at night, lightly spritz your hair with water or aloe vera juice then put a leavin conditioner all over your hair (not too much) then twist it back up with a thick cream. Put a satin scarf on and go to bed. With this method, you should be fine for the whole day

I'm probably a 2.5-3. I'm in school & I have multiple jobs, so I love the ease of low manipulation styles & buns, but my hair doesn't always appreciate it. I only leave buns or braidouts in for 7-10 days absolute maximum, & even then my hair can get crazy tangled. My strands are fine, & things like twists & bantu knots make it uber knotty even if I detangle well before putting them in. I actually get less tangles when wearing wash & gos & flexirod sets.

Thanks.... When installing your braid just make sure you do them as loose as possible, and it's best to keep all your hair braided rather then leaving a piece out for a part. Also, your scalp is still a living organ so it needs ventilation so I would advise against wearing a net and keeping the weave in for to long. 2 months max, and that's with washing your scalp every two weeks at least.

I always put my type 4 natural hair in a protective style I wear it in medium jumbo twists and I do the bending method on my right side and my left side and then I put it in a bun and I wear it like that for a whole week and that's my protective style I refresh my natural hair when it's in a protective style if it looks frizzy and That's the only time I touch it I always leave my natural hair alone so it can grow and flourish 🧔🏾🧔🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾💁🏽‍♂️💁🏽‍♂️

6 - because protective styling is a must for me. I have 4C hair and its important to have stretched hair. The hardest thing for me is my mini twist and fighting the urge to unravel them. I like to feel the moisture retention in my hair.

I am a solid 1, maybe 1.5. SMH I have always HATED doing my hair. I always feel like I could be doing something else. I love the look of protective styles, and I'm going to venture into finger coils soon, but I can't stand the time it takes to do it. This was a very well done video. It explained exactly what I was looking for.

Fantastic. & 7 for sure. I've started wearing protective styles (i used to wear my hair out, ends exposed and everything, or in slick high buns) but now im starting to see a major improvement on my hair growth. which was originally slightly past my shoulders but is now growing at a rate of one to two inches past that thus far. it definitely is difficult to have to fight the urge of redoing my hair over and over though as im used to restyling every morning. but i feel the end results which would be healthier happy hair will be worth it.

6 for me, i love protective styles, my go to style it two strand twists. i would give it a 7 but when i take down my twists i do like to rock the fro for a bit, maybe a week or so. 2 weeks tops before i go back to twist. and i can do so many other styles when my hair are in twist. just wear it down, part it to the side, different up dos.

I'm at a 1 because my hair is short. But when it was bra length I loved wearing it in a bun. It's almost longth enough now to do a very small protective bun without a lot of pulling and gel, cant wait

Thanks to my aunt who loved my natural hair and combed it everyday (sometimes twice a day) when I was a child, I am addicted to combing or brushing my mid back long hair every night before going to bed, to this day. I am transitioning from relaxed to natural now and protective styles are really, really hard for me to keep for more than 2 days. Low manipulation styles are also difficult but much easier to deal with. I am trying so hard to keep my hands out of my hair. Please help me figure out a way to leave my hair alone.

I think I'm a 5-6. I like protective styles because they're convenient and versatile (ex. twists). I find the maintenance (refreshing twists, esp. after moisturizing) a bit challenging though.

I place my hair at a 6. I love protective styles but I like to wear my hair out in a fro once in a while. The most difficult thing about protective styles is committing to them. I constantly have to fight the urge to take them out after 2.5 weeks.

7, The hardest thing I’d have to say is knowing when exactly to add moisture to my hair but I’ve already seen a video you did on finding out when to remoisturize and I’ll be trying it out.

Good, I'm glad to hear that you are no longer wearing a wig. As your hair grows out, its important to find a go to protective style so, your ends are protected and stay on your head :-)

I wear protective styles most of the time. My biggest fault is when I get twist/braid extensions sometimes I leave it in longer than I should, but I've finally learned how to install them myself so I can retouch any lose twists/braids

Great channel. Depends. When my hair is short the twist go every which way so I had to have an arsenal of bobby pins and magic grip hair pins. And snoods to cover it up when yeah there was no saving that hair day so a 4. Now longer hair 10!! Yes love them. Because washing my hair has turned into a wash day. DAY. Shorter hair oh an hour or two. No now it's the whole day gone wash detangle deep cond. So the style is going to last and I do not want to have to retwist (like really?) in 3 days. And I don't get people hating the frizz and new growth?? That is the best part!! That is when you can do some amazing updos! When you first put in the twists there to slick, but after about 4 days you are can start to really play with them but at a week and a half is the real golden period. They will do amazing like Red Carpet updo's!!! MUST have the Magic grip hair pins there expensive but worth it. The new growth and frizz are your best friend. Basically you get the hair teasing you need for free and your hair is still in twists!! This is where having A WHOLE LOT of kinky coily hair pays off.

Awesome video, thank you! I love wearing protective styles, but I tend to get lazy and comfortable with it in a bun and fall off on moisturizing.

I love your video's! I do a lot of protective style video's and I also inform ladies to only leave a protective style on for only 4 weeks if they're using added hair.

2 - I don’t like the look of protective styles on me because my hair is thin. When I wear it out, the volume masks the thinness of my hair strands. Boredom is the hardest thing for me to deal with when my hair is in a protective style but I’m over that now:)

Latest response ever but 2. Mostly for the reasons you named in the video. My nape is just grasping collarbone length and I don’t know of any everyday protective styles to wear to work.

@greenbeauty I ❤️ your channel!!! It’s THE BEST on YT!! I know this video is super old and not sure if you even receive comment notifications anymore. I’m new to natural hair/crochet braids. I’d love to know what your thoughts are on CB’s in terms of being healthy for the hair! I did my first install last month & it occurred to me that the metal latch hook may be damaging my hair as it passes through each braid. I also wonder if the CB hair knots hanging from each braid for 4-6 weeks is detrimental in any way! Am I overthinking this!? Any advice you can provide will so greatly appreciated! PS- CB’s are super popular and I also wonder if we will find out in a decade that it was bad for our hair! I sure as heck hope not. I’d love a video on the process!

Good hair education. I watched natural sistas and watched a video with you link. I subscribed immediately as you make a lot of sense and good advise to a naturista struggling with a 4c (very coarse & dry) hair.

I love protective styles. BUT I hate the fact I don’t know how to braid or twist. I always need someone to put my hair in a protective style and currently during this pandemic, it’s difficult. I would love it more if I learned how to do it myself on my hair. It will make my life easier.

7.5. I like wearing my hair out at least a whole week per month. If I'm going on a date or Sunday funday with the girls I'm definitely rocking a huge 3 strand twist out. Wearing my chosen protective style of 20 to 30 twists to grow my hair tbl is more important in any case.
