Real Families

Жыл бұрын

Bust is an intimate portrait of families struggling to cope with personal debts as the credit crunch unfolds.
Tracy and Melvyn bought their council house on a low interest mortgage, but with rates soaring they’re now in trouble.
Michael is struggling to afford the help he needs to cope with his lung and heart disease.
Maria is a social worker who took out a loan when she could easily afford the repayments. Now on maternity leave - her creditors are threatening to send in the bailiffs.
We follow these families over a year as they struggle to cope, and battle through the bureaucracy of bankruptcy and repossession.
Real Families brings you stories of modern-day family life from around the world through the eyes of children, parents, and parenting experts. Stay with us for weekly documentaries and full episodes of evergreen family documentaries and parenting TV shows.

We need to create petitions for UBI in every city and go to every university and get it on the ballot in cities first to get the attention! The Solution to the problems would be to tie UBI to GDP at 30% of the GDP and that would be the solution to any problems! Our government can do any budget they want for whatever they want and give money to corporations for trickle down which does not which since they do stock buybacks with that!

Melvin is far too passive, takes his anger out on his wife who is trying her best, and thinks someone else should solve his problems. I feel very badly for his wife who is actually looking for solutions, with what looks like no support from him. He berates her and is rude to her. Can’t see a woman putting up with that nonsense for long. The Caribbean woman is a wonderful Mum. But she should NEVER have taken out a 39% loan on a car (a depreciating asset). This was her big mistake. Where on earth is financial literacy taught in the UK? Michael is determined and manages to keep a sense of humour, which is amazing. I wish them all the best.

Easy to say. Some of these people are in debt because of the cost of housing. What would you do, go homeless? How about the guy who has no money because of ill health? He can't turn on his oxygen machines. What should he do? The average price of a house in the UK is £286,000. How are you going to save that up? Get real. 3:30 the minute I heard Tracy say, "they just kept putting the (credit card) limits up so when we did feel we hadn't got quite enough money we'd got plenty of money to spend on the credit cards......we didn't think it through", I knew EXACTLY where this was going. Credit cards are fine as long as you PAY THE ENTIRE SUM each month. NEVER EVER only make minimum payments otherwise you're on a fast track to horrendous debt. I'm rubbish at figures and was always bottom in class at school with maths BUT i've never been in debt because I only used my credit card for petrol and food, then paid the balance off every month.

I paid one credit card using a free-of-interest offer on another credit card transfer, so I paid the whole amount on X credit card, using Y credit card and Y credit card I paid a minimum monthly without interest for a period of 2-3 years, then when offered ended I was getting a similar offer from the bank of credit card X, and repeat the whole process again. In that way, I paid about £ 4000 without paying interest.

He stayed home to care for his sick son. It sounds like a mutual decision and a parent must put their children first. And not all employers are totally sympathetic to those situations. My husband is an at-home dad though now looking for work because living on mine alone has become impossible. But in our parents and grandparents generation it would have been possible… and they talk about how stressful it all is and they argue… but they also realize what they do have. It’s all give and take. And then he talks about his depression. He smiles but he’s not happy and carefree. He’s managing. And that’s me and my husband, too. I don’t see narcissistic in that first husband at all.

I bought a house in South Africa in the 1990s. The interest rate was in single figures, but five years later the interest rate had risen to 27%. It was untenable and we sold the house for what we owed the bank. Five years of payments down the drain and nothing to show for it... But its a better option than to default and be evicted. Things will turn round and get better. Its aweful to experience, but the future will be better.

They have money for alcohol & cigarettes in their home and the wife has 2 diamond rings and 3 gold necklaces around her neck. I’ve been to a food pantry, I’ve sold/pawned my jewelry, I’ve taken the majority of my possessions to a flea market and sold them to feed my family. I see comments that this is an old documentary. Today, a single mum like Maria need not sell her car...use the car to do food deliveries instead. If you do 2 deliveries per day, you can earn at least 10 pounds. That's at least 70 pounds extra income per week. I'm in the US and I use my car to make food deliveries for Uber Eats and Doordash.
@Taylor23890
@Taylor23890 Жыл бұрын
To be legally allowed to deliver food in exchange for money in the UK, you will need to take out a hire and reward insurance policy. It is possible to get insurance that combines SD&P and hire and reward insurance to cover both everyday use and delivery-related driving. So time you pay that do you make that extra ?

I don't even have family in the UK to fall back on, am on my own and thinking of moving back to my previous country because the UK is going nuts with all these price increases everywhere. Everything but our salaries rises. Yes, most countries are struggling to some degree but the UK is going haywire and doing nothing to support the nation. It's beyond me how they dare to treat their hardworking people so poorly. There are so many UK nationals that moved out of the UK before this really started and I don't blame them.

I wish the video went into more detail about the situation in 48:44. I will go into it here. When you go bankrupt, all your financial details will be seen by the Official Receiver for the last 6 years or so. Prior to bankruptcy or even being in debt, you need to treat all creditors equally. You aren't technically allowed to pay off one debt quicker than another as you might be accused of showing what is known in English law as "preference". This is why if you speak to some debt charities such as StepChange, if you take out one of their debt solutions such as a Debt Management Plan (DMP), any payments towards it is divided among all the creditors equally.

No, do your own, can’t remember what it’s called , actually it may be a DRO - debt relief order, you out down all your debts (rent and council tax are not applicable though) then you pay 90 ish and they are all WIPED OUT. I do not know why this isn’t common knowledge.
@babatundeonabajo
@babatundeonabajo Жыл бұрын
@@meelodeshmeeelo2034 It might be a DRO, that's true, but based on what was described in the video I don't think it is. Something to bear in mind is that bankruptcy and DROs are very, very similar to the point I sometimes wonder why DROs even exist.

I watched my mom (single mother) cry on the phone to family and friends at least once a week. I felt helpless as a child and wished I could give her money or do something to change our circumstance, (I knew about it, I could see it) but I couldn't, I was a kid. No child should have to stress about that or watch their parent cry because there is not enough money for groceries. I don't have kids because I know it costs a lot to have them and I can barely afford myself. If you don't have kids yet, only have them if you have a good yearly income to afford them because then they struggle too.
